Book excerpt: Single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) are often considered the prototypical nanomaterial with their characteristic large aspect ratios, high tensile strength and size tunable physical properties. While their remarkable electrical and mechanical properties have been well studied, the optical properties of semiconducting SWNTs are continuously emerging with recently reported developments such as greatly enhanced fluorescence yields and highly efficient nanotube photodiodes. The scope of optoelectronic applications for SWNTs depends critically on a detailed understanding of their highly congested absorption features consisting of strongly bound excitonic (E11, E22, etc.), vibronic and dark state transitions. Until recently, carbon nanotubes consisted of highly inhomogeneous distributions of tubes types that made advanced spectroscopic studies impractical. Enabled by samples highly enriched in specific tube types, we investigate carbon nanotubes photophysics in real-time by applying a wide range of techniques including transient absorption, photon echo and 2D Fourier transform spectroscopy. Through detailed analysis and simulation of these femtosecond nonlinear results, fundamental properties concerning excitonic structure, exciton-phonon interactions, and the dynamics of coherent excitons for these quasi one-dimensional nanomaterials are revealed. Population relaxation dynamics in SWNTs are probed from the visible to mid-infrared regions using transient absorption or grating spectroscopy. Measurements in mid-IR region reveal a broad excited state absorption feature consistent with previously unobserved intra-excitonic transitions and bound vibrational states. Simulation of visible and near-IR transient absorption results suggest efficient exciton-exciton annihilation occurring by both one-dimensional diffusion or delocalized overlap of coherent excitons depending upon the timescale, state transitions, or temperature investigated (4.4 to 292 K). Throughout all the measurements reported, strong contributions from exciton-exciton scattering processes are evident. The timescales for pure optical dephasing (and the corresponding homogeneous lineshape) were obtained through photon echo measurements. Surprisingly long room temperature dephasing times of 285 fs are reported, suggesting unusually weak exciton-phonon coupling and an inhomogeneously broadened absorption lineshape. At lower temperatures the dephasing induced by SWNT optical phonons is mitigated, and we show how acoustic phonon processes and environmental disorder determines the absorption line-shape properties.

Book excerpt: Single-walled and multi-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) and (MWNTs) are low dimensional conductors with unique electronic and electro optic properties. To probe these properties, we investigate the third-order, coherent anti-Stokes (CAS) response of individual SWNTs using a dual color, four-wave-mixing technique. Despite being nanoscale objects much smaller than the wavelength of light, the CAS response allows single SWNTs to be optically imaged with good spatial resolution using picosecond infrared laser excitation pulses and a diffraction limited, confocal microscopy technique. The absence of a pronounced Raman signature shows that the CAS response is dominated by electronic rather than vibrational dynamics. The dependence of the CAS signal on fundamental morphological properties of nanotubes is investigated and characterized. The nonlinear signal is found to depend strongly on nanotube diameter and polarization angle while the dependence on length and individual nanotube chirality is much less clear. The CAS signal is also strongly dependent on metallicity, allowing for straightforward optical discrimination between metallic and semiconducting SWNTs. However, variability of undetermined origin still exists in the CAS signal intensity from a given nanotube type. This variability may depend on electrical contact resistances, charge carrier densities, and local physiochemical effects. Furthermore, identification of the third-order CAS response in SWNTs requires proper accounting for other nonlinear luminescence mechanisms. The SWNT and MWNT optical response is found to contain contributions from competing multi-photon processes, including third-order vibrational and electronic mechanisms as well as second-order fluorescence. The relative intensity of these nonlinear processes is investigated and compared.

Since the discovery of band gap photoluminescence from isolated semiconducting SWCNTs, significant progresses in studying the optical properties of SWCNTs have been made (e.g. linear polarization along the tube axis for the absorption and emission of light, excitonic nature in SWCNT excitation). However, there are still several controversial parameters of SWCNTs (e.g. quantum efficiency, absorption cross section, radiative lifetime, and Auger recombination lifetime). With the advancement in SWCNT sample preparation, studies of SWCNT intrinsic properties have shifted from ensemble to a single tube level, in which the ambiguities in elucidating intrinsic properties posed by the assortment of different tube species can be minimized. By examining individual SWCNTs suspended in air, in contrast to micelle-encapsulated SWCNTs, we believe that the environmental effects can be reduced. This thesis will demonstrate the capability of doing spectroscopy on a single semiconducting air-suspended SWCNT. In continuous-wave excitation, the photoluminescence excitation map and high resolution photoluminescence (PL) image of a SWCNT can be constructed, and PL polarization is proven. Quantum efficiency of 5% is experimentally estimated for (9,8) and (10,8) chiral SWCNTs. Pulse excitation allows us to study the intrinsic exciton dynamics of a SWCNT. To gain insight into exciton nonlinear decay processes, PL saturation in pump power dependence measurement is investigated and compared to the simulated results from stochastic models of exciton dynamics. Femtosecond excitation correlation spectroscopy with 150 fs time resolution is employed to time-resolve the PL of a single tube suspended in air.

This chapter will describe the design and fabrication of CNT-based nonlinear photonic devices. CNTs with suitable diameters – and thus suitable operational wavelengths – are deposited or grown directly on different types of fibers or waveguides to ensure effective CNT–light interaction. Optical nonlinear effects including four-wave mixing (FWM), cross-phase modulation (XPM), and self-phase modulation (SPM) have been observed experimentally using fabricated CNT-based devices. Corresponding wavelength conversion and optical signal regeneration applications based on various nonlinear effects are discussed.
