In Renaissance Italy women played a more central role in providing health care than historians have thus far acknowledged. Women from all walks of life—from household caregivers and nurses to nuns working as apothecaries—drove the Italian medical economy. In convent pharmacies, pox hospitals, girls’ shelters, and homes, women were practitioners and purveyors of knowledge about health and healing, making significant contributions to early modern medicine. Sharon Strocchia offers a wealth of new evidence about how illness was diagnosed and treated, whether by noblewomen living at court or poor nurses living in hospitals. Indeed, as this tripartite work unfolds, the extent to which Goldoni succeeds in subverting the very constrictions of his favorite genre becomes increasingly evident, the bittersweet finale constituting a fittingly ambivalent rendition of comedy's requisite happy end. The Holiday Trilogy is the first of a series of volumes that Marsilio plans to devote to the works of the great Venetian playwright, under the editorship of Franco Fido, to commemorate the bicentennial of Goldoni's death. Anthony Oldcorn's version of the Trilogy received one of the 1993 Kayden Translation Awards.

Italy’s development as a contemporary post-secular and multi-religious society is fraught and fascinating. The recent resurgence of religious discourse is a sign of what German philosopher, Jürgen Habermas, has defined as the post-secular condition. Habermas and others have questioned what most people in the West had, up to a few years ago, taken for granted: the unstoppable forward march of secularization and the subsequent marginalization of religion. Instead, one of the greatest global fault-lines in the contemporary world – the divide between absolutist, extremist Islamic faith and liberal, but Christian-inflected, secular values – has religious identity at its core. The first book-length study to examine religion in contemporary Italian cinema and television, Screening Religions in Italy spans genres such as horror, comedy, hagiopics, and TV fiction, and explores both commercial and art-house filmmaking. In a discussion of films and television series that range from Moretti’s Habemus Papam to Sorrentino’s The Young Pope, the author identifies two key issues: how Italian filmmaking constructs the continuing position of religion in the public sphere and why religion persists on Italian screens.
