Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A broadly-based research programme on orthotropic steel bridge decks, led by D.E. Nunn, was carried out between 1963 and 1987 covering traffic usage, surfacing and fatigue. Initially the work was predictive, determining the main variables and establishing the basis of a fatigue assessment methods. Following the discovery of fatigue cracks in service, methods of repair and strengthening were developed. This work has been recorded in internal reports, but much of it has not been generally available until publication of this review. Experimental results are presented and recommendations given for the fatigue classification of welded joints in orthotropic decks.

Book excerpt: This second edition of Finite Element Analysis and Design of Steel and Steel-Concrete Composite Bridges is brought fully up-to-date and provides structural engineers, academics, practitioners, and researchers with a detailed, robust, and comprehensive combined finite modeling and design approach. The book’s eight chapters begin with an overview of the various forms of modern steel and steel-concrete composite bridges, current design codes (American, British, and Eurocodes), nonlinear material behavior of the bridge components, and applied loads and stability of steel and steel-concrete composite bridges. This is followed by self-contained chapters concerning design examples of steel and steel-concrete composite bridge components as well as finite element modeling of the bridges and their components. The final chapter focuses on finite element analysis and the design of composite highway bridges with profiled steel sheeting. This volume will serve as a valuable reference source addressing the issues, problems, challenges, and questions on how to enhance the design of steel and steel-concrete composite bridges, including highway bridges with profiled steel sheeting, using finite element modeling techniques. Provides all necessary information to understand relevant terminologies and finite element modeling for steel and composite bridges Discusses new designs and materials used in highway and railway bridge Illustrates how to relate the design guidelines and finite element modeling based on internal forces and nominal stresses Explains what should be the consistent approach when developing nonlinear finite element analysis for steel and composite bridges Contains extensive case studies on combining finite element analysis with design for steel and steel-concrete composite bridges, including highway bridges with profiled steel sheeting

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper presents design recommendations of non-composite reinforced concrete bridge decks subjected to fatigue due to moving loads. These recommendations are based on test results of 1/3- and 1/6.6- scale physical models of a full-scale 21.6-cm (8.5 in.) thick and 15.24-m (50-ft) long simply supported non-composite reinforced concrete deck. Concrete bridge decks should be designed to transfer the load in a two-way action. Experimental results show that the two-way slab action in the decks changes to a one-way action (transverse direction) as fatigue damage due to a moving wheel-load accumulates. It is recommended to adopt an isotropic steel reinforcing pattern. An isotropic reinforcing pattern with a steel ratio of 0.3 % (each top and bottom layer) in each direction appears to be adequate. A similar reinforcing amount and pattern is required by the Ontario bridge design Code. The required steel content is therefore reduced resulting in substantial savings in the bridge deck construction costs and improving the corrosion resistance in decks, especially in the presence of deicing chemicals. It appears that flexural cracking in the deck and bond failure at the steel-concrete interface are necessary and sufficient conditions for deck failure under traffic loads. It is, thus, highly desirable to preclude or at least limit cracking and maximize the bond strength of the steel rebars.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Open grid steel bridge decks have been in use for nearly a century. These open grid decks provide an economical and lightweight alternative to traditional reinforced concrete decks. As the transportation infrastructure continues to deteriorate, open grid decks can be used as a cost effective way to rehabilitate structurally deficient bridges. Open grid decks weigh less than conventional reinforced concrete decks and reduce the dead load on a bridge superstructure, thereby increasing the live load capacity. While modern bridge design specifications have evolved to LRFD principles, present design methods for open grid decks are mostly empirical and based on historic practice and performance. Further, fatigue limit states in practice tends to be controlled by cracking in the weak direction, for which no design provisions currently exist. A comprehensive research program was developed to address these issues. The results provide a better understanding of grid deck behavior, and will improve detailing and design provisions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents the analysis and design of fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) bridge decks, which have been increasingly implemented in rehabilitation projects and new construction due to their reduced weight, lower maintenance costs, and enhanced durability. It compiles the necessary information, based primarily on research by the authors, to facilitate the development of standards and guidelines for using FRP decks in bridge designs. The book combines analytical models, numerical analyses, and experimental investigations, which can be applied to various design formulations. It also, for the first time, offers a complete set of design guidelines.
