Book excerpt: As a foreigner who crisscrossed Africa and Europe to arrive on the shores of New York in 2005, I could see the cold fangs of Europe's post-modern-day secularism clashing with the fires of revival from Africa in America's streets. America, a nation that sent out more missionaries than the rest of the world, is now an unreached nation. The Bible says in Luke 12:48 that "whomsoever much is given, of him shall be much required and to whom men have committed much, of him they will ask the more." America has been given much by God, in terms of money, men, and materials, and much is required of her in the last days' harvest. This book challenges the American church to return to her roots and cultivate again her true foundations of evangelism, discipleship, and following Jesus to the ends of the earth.

Book Synopsis Backyard Harvest by : Jo Whittingham
Download or read book Backyard Harvest written by Jo Whittingham and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2011-01-17 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Grow Something to Eat Year-Round is a light, bright new gardening title with a big promise-it sets out to deliver home-grown food from the plot, pot, freezer, or pantry every day of the year. That's easy enough in the summer, when kitchen gardens and allotments are awash with peas, beans, leafy greens, and soft fruit, but not so straightforward in midwinter, when the ground may be frozen solid. Success lies in the planning, and this book is written as a continuum, with sowing, planting, and growing advice for each month to keep the crops coming. There are also features on harvesting, storing, freezing, and preserving crops to enjoy later in the winter months and the early-spring gap when little is ready to harvest. Advice is given on winter polytunnel and greenhouse crops, and indoor seed sprouting, citrus plants, and herbs in pots to help bring fresh tastes to the table in winter. The result is a year-round manual for productive kitchen gardeners, with plenty of growing projects for raised beds and pots to allow smaller-scale gardeners to take part.
Book Synopsis The Secret Message of Jesus by : Brian D. McLaren
Download or read book The Secret Message of Jesus written by Brian D. McLaren and published by Thomas Nelson. This book was released on 2007-04-01 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Brian McLaren began offering an alternative vision of Christian faith and life in books such as A New Kind of Christian and A Generous Orthodoxy, he ignited a firestorm of praise and condemnation that continues to spread across the religious landscape. To some religious conservatives, McLaren is a dangerous rebel without a doctrinally-correct cause. Some fundamentalist websites have even claimed he's in league with the devil and have consigned him to flames. To others though, Brian is a fresh voice, a welcome antidote to the staleness, superficiality, and negativity of the religious status quo. A wide array of people from Evangelical, Catholic, and Mainline Protestant backgrounds claim that through his books they have begun to rediscover the faith they'd lost or rejected. And around the world, many readers say that he has helped them find-for the first time in their lives-a faith that makes sense and rings true. For many, he articulates the promise of what is being called "emerging Christianity." In The Secret Message of Jesus you'll find what's at the center of Brian's critique of conventional Christianity, and what's at the heart of his expanding vision. In the process, you'll meet a Jesus who may be altogether new to you, a Jesus who is... Not the crusading conqueror of religious broadcasting; Not the religious mascot of partisan religion; Not heaven's ticket-checker, whose words have been commandeered by the church to include and exclude, judge and stigmatize, pacify and domesticate. McLaren invites you to discover afresh the transforming message of Jesus-an open invitation to radical change, an enlightening revelation that exposes sham and ignites hope, an epic story that is good news for everyone, whatever their gender, race, class, politics, or religion. "Pastor and best-selling author McLaren revisits the gospel material from a fresh-and at times radical-perspective . . . He does an excellent job of capturing Jesus' quiet, revolutionary style." --Publishers Weekly (starred review) "Here McLaren shares his own ferocious journey in pondering the teachings and actions of Jesus. It is McLaren's lack of salesmanship or agenda that creates a refreshing picture of the man from Galilee who changed history." --Donald Miller, Author of Blue Like Jazz "In this critical book, Brian challenges us to ask what it would mean to truly live the message of Jesus today, and thus to risk turning everything upside down." --Jim Wallis, Author of God's Politics and editor of Sojourners "Compelling, crucial and liberating: a book for those who seek to experience the blessed heat of Christianity at its source." --Anne Rice, Author of Christ the Lord: Out of Egypt

Book Synopsis Burning Bodies by : Michael D. Barbezat
Download or read book Burning Bodies written by Michael D. Barbezat and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2018-12-15 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Burning Bodies interrogates the ideas that the authors of historical and theological texts in the medieval West associated with the burning alive of Christian heretics. Michael Barbezat traces these instances from the eleventh century until the advent of the internal crusades of the thirteenth century, depicting the exclusionary fires of hell and judicial execution, the purifying fire of post-mortem purgation, and the unifying fire of God's love that medieval authors used to describe processes of social inclusion and exclusion. Burning Bodies analyses how the accounts of burning heretics alive referenced, affirmed, and elaborated upon wider discourses of community and eschatology. Descriptions of burning supposed heretics alive were profoundly related to ideas of a redemptive Christian community based upon a divine, unifying love, and medieval understandings of what these burnings could have meant to contemporaries cannot be fully appreciated outside of this discourse of communal love. For them, human communities were bodies on fire. Medieval theologians and academics often described the corporate identity of the Christian world as a body joined together by the love of God. This love was like a fire, melting individuals together into one whole. Those who did not spiritually burn with God's love were destined to burn literally in the fires of Hell or Purgatory, and the fires of execution were often described as an earthly extension of these fires. Through this analysis, Barbezat demonstrates how presentations of heresy, and to some extent actual responses to perceived heretics, were shaped by long-standing images of biblical commentary and exegesis. He finds that this imagery is more than a literary curiosity; it is, in fact, a formative historical agent.

Or is all of this suffering and sorrow in this life meant to amplify the incredible plan that God has mysteriously woven throughout the world's most controversial and powerful book, the Bible? In Hell Is Not the Issue, you will see that it is God who has put limits on Himself to get us to believe that He is vulnerable to Satan and mankind's choices. But nothing could be further from the truth! God's amazing plan is designed to not only create a win for everyone--even Satan, but in doing so God is going to write the most incredible story of the ages. And you can discover this marvelous story about a Savior who allows people to go to Hell, not to be punished, but to be pardoned. Within these pages you will see that there are passages of Scripture that almost nobody talks about that give clues to this amazing redemption story. A story like you've never heard it told before, anywhere. God is good, and you will benefit from His goodness. See for yourself what the Bible actually says about Hell and the plan that God has for it. If you're like most people, you've never really studied this topic on your own before. If you only ever read one book about Hell, Hell Is Not the Issue should be the book that you read.
