Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the 1980s, deregulation became adopted as a slogan and set of practices which by setting market forces free could increase the efficiency of market systems. This was particularly the case in the financial services where national systems which had been closed through government and industry collaboration were now opened up to more internal and international competition. This book examines the consequences of deregulation in retail financial services. It shows that organisation and actors sought to adapt to this process, often with unexpected results.

Book excerpt: The process of financial deregulation, and especially the dismantling of direct monetary controls, has been underway for some time now in many financially-developed economies, but little attention has been devoted to analysis of the issues involved in the academic literature. This book represents an attempt to remedy that deficiency providing, as it does, a detailed analysis of the programmes of financial deregulation pursued in the United Kingdom and Australia since 1970 and an assessment of the implications for monetary and prudential policy.

Where financial services are today, other industries such as electronics, computers, telecommunications, and air transport will be in the near future. This book describes why this is happening and how companies are tackling the challenge of this volatile environment. The first part describes the causes of this volatility through new government regulations, shifts in customer behavior, the impact of new technology, and more aggressive global competition. The second part of the book contains case study material from international companies including managing the portfolio of a global financial services organization and corporate development for an international bank. Driving Strategic Change in Financial Services is an essential tool for understanding the global climate in financial services and for mastering the task of developing an international company. Executives, policy-makers, and managers in banking and other markets such as electronic commerce will find valuable insights and useful case material. Features

The regulation of network industries has emerged as a key issue on the European policy agenda, yet there is little high-quality research capable of informing the European policy debate. The Monitoring European Deregulation (MED) series was launched by CEPR and SNS in 1997 and features new, policy-oriented research on the liberalization of the European markets of the major network industries (previous reports have focused on telecommunications and electricity). Addressed to a wide audience of both academics and European decisionmakers in the private-sector and policy communities, at both the national and EU level, the new reportwhich focuses on the deregulation of the European banking systemwill play an important role in influencing current thinking on these issues and contributing to the policy debate.

Book excerpt: Adam Smith's 'invisible hand' relied on the self-interest of individuals to produce good outcomes. Economists' belief in efficient markets took this idea further by assuming that all individuals are selfish. This belief underpinned financial deregulation, and the theories on incentives and performance which supported it. However, although Adam Smith argued that although individuals may be self-interested, he argued that they also have other-regarding motivations, including a desire for the approbation of others. This book argues that the trust-intensive nature of financial services makes it essential to cultivate such other-regarding motivations, and it provides proposals on how this might be done. Trustworthiness in the financial services industry was eroded by deregulation and by the changes to industry structure which followed. Incentive structures encouraged managers to disguise risky products as yielding high returns, and regulation failed to curb this risk-taking, rent-seeking behaviour. The book makes a number of proposals for reforms of governance, and of legal and regulatory arrangements, to address these issues. The proposals seek to harness values and norms that would reinforce 'other-regarding' behaviour, so that the firms and individuals in the financial services act in a more trustworthy manner. Four requirements are identified which together might secure more strongly trustworthy behaviour: the definition of obligations, the identification of responsibilities, the creation of mechanisms which encourage trustworthiness, and the holding to account of those involved in an appropriate manner. Financial reforms at present lack sufficient focus on these requirements, and the book proposes a range of further actions for specific parts of the financial industry.

Book excerpt: The European Single Market in financial services, the quest for international harmonization of supervisory practices and the numerous failures of financial institutions during recent years - notably BCCI - have highlighted the need for a reappraisal of the regulation of financial markets and institutions. Focusing on the banks incorporated in the Golden Triangle - London, New York and Tokyo - this book compares and assesses the regulatory and supervisory frameworks established to protect depositors and investors and preserve overall financial stability.
