Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Uganda is one of the most fascinating countries in Africa. Situated in the middle of the Great Lakes region of Eastern Africa, it is home to diverse flora and fauna. Little wonder Winston Churchill famously named it “the Pearl of Africa”. Neighbored by South Sudan, DRC, Kenya, Tanzania, and Rwanda, Uganda claims the source of the River Nile and a larger share of Victoria, Africa’s largest lake. Uganda’s capital, Kampala is famous for hosting many international conferences and summits including the 2007 Commonwealth Head of Government Meeting. Uganda is witnessing rapid development, overseen by Yoweri Tibuhaburwa Museveni who has served as president since 1986, making him the longest serving leader in Uganda. Museveni came to power on the backdrop of a 5-year guerilla struggle that toppled the regimes of Milton Obote and the military junta of Tito Okello Lutwa. Historical Dictionary of Uganda, Second Edition, covers the history of Uganda using a chronology, an introductory essay, appendixes, and a bibliography. The dictionary section covers many entries on politics, economy, foreign affairs, religion, society, culture, and important personalities. The book provides a quick access for researchers, students, tourists, and anyone interesting in learning about Uganda.

This book was released on 2016-12-26 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book demonstrates that societies experiencing prolonged and severe crises of legitimacy are prone to intense and persistent political violence. The most significant factor accounting for the persistence of intense political violence in Uganda is the severe crisis of legitimacy of the state, its institutions, political incumbents and their challengers. This crisis of legitimacy, which is shaped by both internal and external forces, past and present, accounts for the remarkable continuity in the history of political violence since the construction of the state.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Historically, studies of the church in Africa have tended to focus on church history or church-state relations, but in this publication David Zac Niringiye presents a study of the Church of Uganda focused on its ecclesiology. Niringiye examines several formative periods for the Church of Uganda during concurrent chronological political eras characterized by varying degrees of socio-political turbulence, highlighting how the social context impacted the church’s self-expression. The author’s methodology and insight sets this work apart as an excellent reflection on the Ugandan church and brings scholarly attention to previously ignored topics that hold great value to society, the church, and the academic community globally.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Missionary of Reconciliation: The Role of the Doctrine of Reconciliation in the Preaching of Festo Kivengere of Uganda, 1971–1988 Alfred Olwa (Sydney, Australia) In the period 1971–1988, the Christian doctrine of reconciliation was central to Festo Kivengere’s preaching in Uganda and beyond. This doctrine so gripped Kivengere that it shaped his attitude to life, to others, and even to his enemies. He exhorted his audiences to be reconciled with God and then with their fellow human beings, as part of God’s remedy for a broken world. In his preaching, Kivengere depicts Jesus as a missionary of reconciliation who brings a fresh and alternative life, characterized by the reconciling love and peace from God. He preached the Christian doctrine of reconciliation into a Uganda where Christians lived under the horrors of Amin’s rule and its aftermath. According to Kivengere, the world changes through the preaching of the reconciliation centered in Jesus Christ.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Religion, Politics and Cults in East Africa is the first major, original, and extensive research-based study of the apocalyptic and doomsday Catholic Marian Movement and its Benedictine monastic moral and religious practices, including vows of poverty, celibacy, obedience, daily contemplation in silence, and hard work. The Marian Movement is presented within the cultural, historical, political, and religious context of the East African Revival Movement, the Anglican Balokole Movement, Alice Lakwena's Holy Spirit Movement, Joseph Kony's Lord's Resistance Army (LRA), and other religio-political liberation movements, including the Maji Maji, the Mau Mau, and Nyabingi Liberation Movement. The Marian Movement was locally known as "Abanyabugoto" and "The Movement for the Restoration of the Ten Commandments of God". It began in 1989 as a Catholic women's Marian devotional and moral reformation movement, founded and headed by Keledonia Mwerinde. Faced with African cultural patriarchy and male-dominated Catholic Church hierarchy, Mwerinde recruited Joseph Kibwetere and the Rev. Fr. Dominic Kataribabo to serve as the public face of the Marian Movement. In response to Catholic hierarchy's opposition and persecution, Fr. Kataribabo designed a theology of ritual sacrifice, atonement, and martyrdoms for the devout Marian Catholics, who were devotees of the Blessed Virgin Mary. He martyred the Marian devotees in March 2000, in order to transform them into Mary's saints, and to liberate their souls and send them to heaven, where they would instantly attain eternal life, lasting peace, and happiness."--Publisher's website.

Book Synopsis Religion, Conflict, and Democracy in Modern Africa by : Samuel K. Elolia
Download or read book Religion, Conflict, and Democracy in Modern Africa written by Samuel K. Elolia and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2012-03-02 with total page 387 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Spanning various regions of Sub-Saharan Africa, the authors of this volume come together to explore the complex relationship between religion and democracy in contemporary Africa. As a result of the end of the Cold War and the fall of the Soviet Union, many African countries have come to the realization, however partial, that political and social change is inevitable in spite of government heavy-handedness and threats. It has also become evident that no political system that refuses to permit freedom of political expression and alternative systems of governance could continue to be sustained. It is in precisely this political climate that religious institutions have collaborated with other elements of civil society to call for political reforms, with the church often becoming the prominent voice against oppressive governments in countries such as Kenya and South Africa. It is the purpose of this book to assess how religion shapes political issues and to what extent religious forces influence the civil society. By acknowledging the role of the civil society, the essays recognize the resilience that comes out of Africa even when the sociopolitical situation seems unbearable.

Book Synopsis Women, Development and Peacebuilding in Africa by : Jennifer Ball
Download or read book Women, Development and Peacebuilding in Africa written by Jennifer Ball and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-09-20 with total page 219 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores and reflects on peacebuilding, which emerges from the experiences and realities of women’s lives in East Africa, specifically, in Uganda. The author argues that often these community based peacebuilding efforts are responses to women's struggles for survival — both individually and for their families and communities. Carefully analyzing education, women's roles, human rights, conflicts, disability and immigration, this book helps to understand African women's roles in development and peacebuilding in the region. The project will interest development studies and African politics scholars, graduate students, researchers and policy makers.
