I enthält Beiträge zur jiddischen Philologie: Entstehung und Alter der Sprache, orthographische und lautliche Entwicklungen, Probleme der Umsetzung in Lateinschrift, Dialektologie, Etymologie u.a., ferner einen Überblick über die weiteren jüdischen Sprachen sowie umfangreiche Einzeluntersuchungen insbesondere zum Dzudezmo ('Jüdischspanischen') und zum Bucharischen ('Jüdischpersischen'). Die Beiträge in Bd. II dokumentieren die Entwicklung der sich etablierenden hebräischen Paläographie in den 30er bis 60er Jahren, wo Birnbaums quantitative und vergleichende Methoden sich vor allem seit 1947 an den damals aufgefundenen Schriftrollen vom Toten Meer, aber auch an Neufunden mittelalterlicher jiddischer Handschriften glänzend bewährten. Birnbaum lehrte von 1922 bis 1933 Jiddisch an der Universität Hamburg, von 1936 bis 1957 Jiddisch und hebräische Paläographie an Londoner universitären Instituten.

A new world view was created, along with a new type of individual possessing new economic orientations to the marketplace and new social attitudes deriving from such concerns. The unified political and religious world of medieval Europe broke into parts: national differentiation and religious options abounded. The autonomy of the nation-state created a need for new attitudes toward religious minorities, even despised ones such as the Jews. The court Jew phenomenon, as Selma Stern details, was inextricably linked to these larger developments, including the emancipation of Jews as a whole. Dr. Stern's work is an effort to reconstruct this unusual group of Jews who became politically and economically influential and through that mechanism were able to enhance Jewish community life as a whole. In his very existence the court Jew necessarily enlarged, beyond its original meaning, the concept of free expression in European societies. As the dominating idea of defending one church and one emperor collapsed under the weight of the new European system of power balances, a new conception of the Jew developed, one of a transforming agent in economic and political positions. With trade no longer condemned as sinful, collecting interest for loans no longer prohibited, and the merchant no longe'r compared to a thief, the Jewish money changer and tradesman came to be viewed in a more favorable light. In this new environment, the claims of Christianity remained supreme, but the rights of religious minorities were considered. At the time of the book's initial appearance, the Saturday Review hailed it as a "picturesque work giving evidence of great writing talent." The reviewer went on to note that "Dr. Stern's work provided exhaustive historical background of European Jewryâfrom 1650 to 1750âthat period during which the modern European genius emerged." Dr. Stern's work relies heavily upon European archives up to 1938, when the advances of Nazism made further work impossible. As a result, what was started in Europe was completed in America.

When the focus is on anti-Semitism, Jewish history appears as a record of unmitigated hostility against the Jewish people and of passivity on their part. However, as Werner J. Cahnman demonstrates in this posthumous volume, Jewish-Gentile relations are far more complex. There is a long history of mutual contacts, positive as well as antagonistic, even if conflict continues to require particular attention. Cahnman's approach, while following a historical sequence, is sociological in conception. From Roman antiquity through the Middle Ages, into the era of emancipation and the Holocaust, and finally to the present American and Israeli scene, there are basic similarities and various dissimilarities, all of which are described and analyzed. Cahnman tests the theses of classical sociology implicitly, yet unobtrusively. He traces the socio-economic basis of human relations, which Marx and others have emphasized, and considers Jews a "marginal trading people" in the Park-Becker sense. Simmel and Toennies, he shows, understood Jews as "strangers" and "intermediaries." While Cahnman shows that Jews were not "pariahs," as Max Weber thought, he finds a remarkable affinity to Weber's Protestantism-capitalism argument in the tension of Jewish-Christian relations emerging from the bitter theological argument over usury. The primacy of Jewish-Gentile relations in all their complexity and variability is essential for the understanding of Jewish social and political history. This volume is a valuable contribution to that understanding. Cahnman one of the pioneers of historical sociology, surveys Jewish-Gentile relations from antiquity to the present, focusing on the role of Jews as outsiders who serve as "mediators" between worlds. - Choice Werner J. Cahnman (1902-1980) taught at many American universities, including Rutgers and the New School for Social Research. Judith T. Marcus is on the faculty of Kenyon College and is the author of Georg Lukacs and Thomas Mann: A Study in the Sociology of Literature.
