Kaum ein Bereich unseres alltäglichen Lebens bleibt vom Einfluss der Wissenschaft verschont. Der Exzess des Wissens führt dabei notwendigerweise zu einem Verlust an Vertrauen und Glauben. Aus dieser Perspektive bedroht die Freiheit der Wissenschaft die Freiheit des Menschen, der auf eine bloß materialisierte und quantifizierte Entität reduziert wird. Um ein sinnerfülltes Leben führen zu können, so der Autor, bedarf es dagegen der epistemischen Bescheidenheit und der »Empfindsamkeit als epistemische Tugend«. Er plädiert dafür, auf unserem Weg der Erkenntnissuche, der »von der Weisheit zur Wissenschaft« geführt hat, umzukehren und uns wieder dem Streben nach Weisheit zu öffnen. Über die Freiheit von Wissenschaft muss neu nachgedacht werden, wenn es um die Freiheit des Menschen geht.
