Drawing on archival research and extensive fieldwork in the regions of Bunyoro and Tooro, Linda Cimardi examines the connection between traditional performing arts and gender in western Uganda. The book focuses on runyege, the main genre of the Banyoro and Batooro people, exploring its different components of singing, instrument playing, dancing, and acting and identifying their complex relationships to gender models and expressions. Today mainly performed at Ugandan school festivals and by semiprofessional ensembles, repertoires like runyege adhere to stage conventions that have developed over several decades. Some of these conventions are powerful devices allowing the actors involved (performers, teachers, students, adjudicators, and audiences) to collectively shape an image of local culture grounded in a gender binary that is perceived as traditional. At the same time, stage conventions are exploited by some performers to negotiate their gender identities and expressions in unconventional ways, thus challenging hegemonic gender models. Moving between analysis of historical recordings, oral accounts, and present-day fieldwork data and experiences, the book engages in a comprehensive analysis of the postcolonial entanglement of arts and gender. Book excerpt: This thesis provides a critical examination of how dance teachers rationalize pedagogies of cultural heritage dances in varied nonacademic environments in central Uganda. The study examined the reflections and practices of eight cultural heritage dance teachers to reveal how application of these pedagogies is a method of thought and inquiry – knowing and thinking, framework of ‘transformance’ – becoming, system of cultural practice – being, and means of creating and expression – doing and embodying. The study was guided by the following key question: How do the dance teachers rationalize pedagogies of cultural heritage dances in various nonacademic environments in central Uganda? Grounded in the Ubuntu worldview and the theory of constructivism, and using a phenomenological qualitative research inquiry, this study was carried out over a period of eight months. The research data was gathered through semi-structured phenomenological interviews, storytelling sessions, and participant and nonparticipant observations. The findings showed that as an idiom of thought, pedagogy facilitates complex epistemological links between the dance teachers, learners, the content knowledge and skills of the dances, and the communities of dance practice in which it is applied. The rationalization of pedagogy by the dance teachers value the individual learners as knowledgeable others, celebrate their abilities to construct meanings from embodied and reflective experiences, embrace the community as an epistemological resource, and integrate the diverse content knowledge of the dance traditions. Individual dance teachers claim agency in processes of locating and deconstructing the dance episteme as thinkers, doers, collaborators, knowers, and inquirers. Pedagogy as a system of knowledge production draws on the multiplicity of dance traditions, individual talents, and cultural identities, and mediates the reciprocal interplay between individuality and communality. The study also explored how the dance teachers situate their pedagogies in the contemporary local phenomena, evolving dance traditions, complex ethnic demography, and emerging institutional frameworks such as schools, dance troupes, and universities. This inquiry sought to reveals the complexity and rational depth of pedagogic thought and its applications in and implications for cultural heritage dances in order to expand perspectives and enrich existing discourses on dance education policy, theory, pedagogy, research, practice, and curriculum development.

Book excerpt: This thesis questions what it was like for pre-service teachers registered in a Bachelor of Education program to experience Kpanlogo, a West African dance from Ghana. Over a period of two years, the primary researcher introduced this dance to her peers first as a pre-service teacher, and then as a graduate student in a variety of ways: 1) practicing it for a performance at a community building talent show on campus, 2) learning it through a professional development workshop, and 3) teaching it to intermediate students at a local school, on two different occasions. Five pre-service teachers responded to an invitation to participate in a phenomenological study about their experiences. The two research questions which guided the interviews were: 1) What was it like to experience Kpanlogo, a West African dance, as a pre-service teacher? 2) What was it like as a pre-service teacher to teach students Kpanlogo? The conceptual framework of Sankofa Cyclical Waves, situated in a collectivist African Worldview orients us to the philosophy of Ubuntu, which posits that humanness is found and cultivated within community. Sankofa, a Ghanaian proverb which encourages its people to go back, physically or spiritually, to retrieve what was once lost or forgotten was used as a particular path to analyze the lived experiences of the pre-service teachers. In this thesis the Sankofa Cyclical Waves provided a structure to identify their various levels of understanding Ubuntu. Experiences analyzed as being novice in nature were awkward at the start, then as the dancer moves towards the end of the continuum, towards Ubuntu, the dancer moves through a series of waves as they become more familiar with rhythms, movements, African dance attire, and becoming a part of the whole; the Other's community.
