In the few short years of the lifetime of this conference, we have seen major changes in our emerging research community. When the conference started in 1999, as Handheld and Ubiquitous Computing, the field was still in its formative stage. In 2002, we see the Ubicomp conference (the name was shortened last year) emerging as an established player attracting research submissions of very high quality from all over the world. Virtually all major research centers and universities now have research programs broadly in the field of ubiquitous computing. Whether we choose to call it ubiquitous, pervasive, invisible, disappearing, embodied, or some other variant of computing, it is clear that Mark Weiser’s original vision has only become more and more relevant since the term was coined over 10 years ago. But, most important in our context, the interest in the field can be gauged from the rising number of full paper submissions to the conference: from about 70 in both 1999 and 2000, to 90 in 2001, to this year's record breaking 136! Counting technical notes, workshops, poster and video submissions, there were over 250 original works submitted to this year’s conference. This is an impressive effort by the research community, and we are grateful to everyone who took time to submit their work – without this, the conference would simply not exist.

Pervasive attracted 157 valid submissions, from which the Technical Program Committee (TPC) accepted 24 full papers and one note, resulting in an overall acceptance rate of 16%. The submissions included 628 authors from 27 countries representing all the continents (except Antarctica). As we can see from these ?gures, Pervasive is a truly global highly competitive conference. A major conference such as Pervasive requires a rigorous and objective p- cess for selecting papers. This starts with the selection of a high-quality TPC. We were fortunate to be able to draw on the wisdom and experience of our 28 TPC members, from the most prestigious universities and research labs in - rope, North America, and Asia. This committee was aided by the input of no less than 238 external reviewers chosen on the basis of their domain knowledge and relevance to pervasive computing. The papers were selected using a double-blind review, with four peer reviews perpaper,adiscussionphaseamongthereviewers,andadiscussionofthepapers in the TPC meeting, which was held in Palo Alto during December 12-13, 2009. We thank Nokia Research Center for hosting the meeting.

This new wave of UMICS will exploit the knowledge developed and deployed for conventional infor- tion systems, but will also need new concepts, models, methodologies, and supporting technologies to fully exploit the potentials of the enabling infrastructure and to be ready for the challenge. Moreover, people need to move across organizational boundaries and collaborate with others within an organization as well as between organizations. A range of information from sensing and reas- ing technologies is used by distributed devices in the environment. The cooperation between natural user interfaces and sensor interfaces covers all of a person’s s- roundings, resulting in a device environment that behaves intelligently; the term “Ambient Intelligence” has been coined to describe it. In this way, the environment is able to recognize the persons in it, to identify their individual needs, to learn from their behavior, and to act and react in their interest. Since this vision is influenced by a lot of different concepts in information proce- ing and combines multi-disciplinary fields in electrical engineering, computer science, industrial design, user interfaces, and cognitive sciences, considerable research is needed to provide new models of technological innovation within a multi-dimensional society. Thus the AmI vision relies on the large-scale integration of electronics into the environment, enabling the actors, i.e., people and objects, to interact with their surrounding in a seamless, trustworthy, and natural manner.
