Forest Service Research Pater Int-16 to Int-30, 1965-1966 Overstocking threatens production on more than 1 million acres of western larch (larix occidentalis Nutt.) in the northern Rocky Mountains Dense stands have developed on favorable seedbeds found on many large burns and cutover areas in this region. The great number of stems in many of these stands precludes Optimum growth and development of individual trees because growth is being distributed over too many stems per acre. These trees are likely to remain overcrowded for long periods if stands are unmanaged. Trees in such stands will not reach commercially desirable size within a reasonable time. The obvious solution to the over stocking problem is thinning. Few western larch stands have been thinned, and little information has been published on thinnings in larch. Forest managers are now guided principally by information developed in other forest types. This paper reports results of two western larch thinning studies located on the lo10 National Forest in western Montana. Briefly, the results show that diameter, basal area, height, and cubic-foot volume growth can be improved by thinning. Concentrating growth on fewer trees per acre will produce larger trees earlier. Book excerpt: Fire managers need better estimates of fuel loading so they can more accurately predict the potential fire behavior and effects of alternative fuel and ecosystem restoration treatments. This report presents a new fuel sampling method, called the photoload sampling technique, to quickly and accurately estimate loadings for six common surface fuel components (1 hr, 10 hr, 100 hr, and 1000 hr downed dead woody, shrub, and herbaceous fuels). This technique involves visually comparing fuel conditions in the field with photoload sequences to estimate fuel loadings. Photoload sequences are a series of downward-looking and close-up oblique photographs depicting a sequence of graduated fuel loadings of synthetic fuelbeds for each of the six fuel components. This report contains a set of photoload sequences that describe the range of fuel component loadings for common forest conditions in the northern Rocky Mountains of Montana, USA to estimate fuel loading in the field. A companion publication (RMRS-RP-61CD) details the methods used to create the photoload sequences and presents a comprehensive evaluation of the technique.

A stone when struck resists. If its resistance is greater than the force of the blow struck, it remains outwardly unchanged. Otherwise, it is shattered into smaller bits. Never does the stone attempt to react in such a way that it may maintain itself against the blow, much less so as to render the blow a contributing factor to its own continued action. While the living thing may easily be crushed by superior force, it none the less tries to turn the energies which act upon it into means of its own further existence. If it cannot do so, it does not just split into smaller pieces (at least in the higher forms of life), but loses its identity as a living thing. As long as it endures, it struggles to use surrounding energies in its own behalf. It uses light, air, moisture, and the material of soil. To say that it uses them is to say that it turns them into means of its own conservation. As long as it is growing, the energy it expends in thus turning the environment to account is more than compensated for by the return it gets: it grows. Understanding the word "control" in this sense, it may be said that a living being is one that subjugates and controls for its own continued activity the energies that would otherwise use it up. Life is a self-renewing process through action upon the environment.
