Book Synopsis The Logic of Typed Feature Structures by : Robert L. Carpenter
Download or read book The Logic of Typed Feature Structures written by Robert L. Carpenter and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2005-11-10 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book develops the theory of typed feature structures, a new form of data structure that generalizes both the first-order terms of logic programs and feature-structures of unification-based grammars to include inheritance, typing, inequality, cycles and intensionality. It presents a synthesis of many existing ideas into a uniform framework, which serves as a logical foundation for grammars, logic programming and constraint-based reasoning systems. Throughout the text, a logical perspective is adopted that employs an attribute-value description language along with complete equational axiomatizations of the various systems of feature structures. Efficiency concerns are discussed and complexity and representability results are provided. The application of feature structures to phrase structure grammars is described and completeness results are shown for standard evaluation strategies. Definite clause logic programs are treated as a special case of phrase structure grammars. Constraint systems are introduced and an enumeration technique is given for solving arbitrary attribute-value logic constraints. This book with its innovative approach to data structures will be essential reading for researchers in computational linguistics, logic programming and knowledge representation. Its self-contained presentation makes it flexible enough to serve as both a research tool and a textbook.

This book was released on 2004 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A major obstacle in developing efficient parsers for unification-based grammars is the slow parsing time caused by the complex and large structure used to represent grammatical categories. With the broadening coverage of such grammars, their size and complexity increases, creating the need for improved parsing techniques. Although several statistical optimizations exist today that exhibit significant improvements in parsing times, they rely on data collected during a training phase. This thesis presents a theoretical investigation of indexing based on static analysis of feature structure grammar rules, a method that has received little attention in the last few years in computational linguistics. This non-statistical approach has the advantage of not requiring training phases, although it is consistent with further statistical optimizations.
Book Synopsis Systemic Functional Grammar & Natural Language Generation by : Elke Teich
Download or read book Systemic Functional Grammar & Natural Language Generation written by Elke Teich and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 1999-04-01 with total page 269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume deals with the computational application of systemic functional grammar (SFG) for natural language generation. In particular, it describes the implementation of a fragment of the grammar of German in the computational framework of KOMET-PENMAN for multilingual generation. The text also presents a specification of explicit well-formedness constraints on syntagmatic structure which are defined in the form of typed feature structures. It thus achieves a model of systemic functional grammar that unites both the strengths of systemics, such as stratification, functional diversification and the orientation to context, and the kind of syntactic generalizations that are typically found in modern, syntagmatically-focused computational grammars.
Book Synopsis Head-Driven Phrase Structure Grammar by : Carl Pollard
Download or read book Head-Driven Phrase Structure Grammar written by Carl Pollard and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 1994-08-15 with total page 460 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents the most complete exposition of the theory of head-driven phrase structure grammar (HPSG), introduced in the authors' Information-Based Syntax and Semantics. HPSG provides an integration of key ideas from the various disciplines of cognitive science, drawing on results from diverse approaches to syntactic theory, situation semantics, data type theory, and knowledge representation. The result is a conception of grammar as a set of declarative and order-independent constraints, a conception well suited to modelling human language processing. This self-contained volume demonstrates the applicability of the HPSG approach to a wide range of empirical problems, including a number which have occupied center-stage within syntactic theory for well over twenty years: the control of "understood" subjects, long-distance dependencies conventionally treated in terms of wh-movement, and syntactic constraints on the relationship between various kinds of pronouns and their antecedents. The authors make clear how their approach compares with and improves upon approaches undertaken in other frameworks, including in particular the government-binding theory of Noam Chomsky.

Book Synopsis Unification Grammars by : Nissim Francez
Download or read book Unification Grammars written by Nissim Francez and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2011-09-30 with total page 325 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Grammars of natural languages can be expressed as mathematical objects, similar to computer programs. Such a formal presentation of grammars facilitates mathematical reasoning with grammars (and the languages they denote), as well as computational implementation of grammar processors. This book presents one of the most commonly used grammatical formalisms, Unification Grammars, which underlies contemporary linguistic theories such as Lexical-Functional Grammar (LFG) and Head-driven Phrase Structure Grammar (HPSG). The book provides a robust and rigorous exposition of the formalism that is both mathematically well-founded and linguistically motivated. While the material is presented formally, and much of the text is mathematically oriented, a core chapter of the book addresses linguistic applications and the implementation of several linguistic insights in unification grammars. Dozens of examples and numerous exercises (many with solutions) illustrate key points. Graduate students and researchers in both computer science and linguistics will find this book a valuable resource.

Book Synopsis Head-Driven Phrase Structure Grammar by : Stefan Müller
Download or read book Head-Driven Phrase Structure Grammar written by Stefan Müller and published by Language Science Press. This book was released on with total page 1632 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Head-Driven Phrase Structure Grammar (HPSG) is a constraint-based or declarative approach to linguistic knowledge, which analyses all descriptive levels (phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, pragmatics) with feature value pairs, structure sharing, and relational constraints. In syntax it assumes that expressions have a single relatively simple constituent structure. This volume provides a state-of-the-art introduction to the framework. Various chapters discuss basic assumptions and formal foundations, describe the evolution of the framework, and go into the details of the main syntactic phenomena. Further chapters are devoted to non-syntactic levels of description. The book also considers related fields and research areas (gesture, sign languages, computational linguistics) and includes chapters comparing HPSG with other frameworks (Lexical Functional Grammar, Categorial Grammar, Construction Grammar, Dependency Grammar, and Minimalism).
Book Synopsis Grammatical Inference: Algorithms and Applications by : Pieter Adriaans
Download or read book Grammatical Inference: Algorithms and Applications written by Pieter Adriaans and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2002-09-11 with total page 325 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Sixth International Colloquium on Grammatical Inference (ICGI2002) was held in Amsterdam on September 23-25th, 2002. ICGI2002 was the sixth in a series of successful biennial international conferenceson the area of grammatical inference. Previous meetings were held in Essex, U.K.; Alicante, Spain; Mo- pellier, France; Ames, Iowa, USA; Lisbon, Portugal. This series of meetings seeks to provide a forum for the presentation and discussion of original research on all aspects of grammatical inference. Gr- matical inference, the process of inferring grammars from given data, is a ?eld that not only is challenging from a purely scienti?c standpoint but also ?nds many applications in real-world problems. Despite the fact that grammatical inference addresses problems in a re- tively narrow area, it uses techniques from many domains, and is positioned at the intersection of a number of di?erent disciplines. Researchers in grammatical inference come from ?elds as diverse as machine learning, theoretical computer science, computational linguistics, pattern recognition, and arti?cial neural n- works. From a practical standpoint, applications in areas like natural language - quisition, computational biology, structural pattern recognition, information - trieval, text processing, data compression and adaptive intelligent agents have either been demonstrated or proposed in the literature. The technical program included the presentation of 23 accepted papers (out of 41 submitted). Moreover, for the ?rst time a software presentation was or- nized at ICGI. Short descriptions of the corresponding software are included in these proceedings, too.
