Book excerpt: Although Isaac Conley and his wife, Cydney, live under the same roof, being married to each other is a nightmare! Isaac is a dirty cop with a partner, Miguel, who is just as grimey as he is. They take on the streets of St. Louis by using extreme force, by stealing money from drug dealers and by surrounding themselves with "ghetto girls" who love to fulfill their manly needs. Cydney is well aware of Isaac's adulteress ways, but she has plenty of skeletons buried in her closet. Her motto is: if he can do it, I can do it better. Not only does she attempt to do it better, but once she seeks revenge by giving up the goodies to Miguel, her game is summed up by one word-OVER! Miguel is a player-hating friend who secretly conspires to bring Isaac down. He gets furious when Cydney decides to reconcile with her husband, and by any means necessary, he's not about to let that happen. He stirs up many toxic dishes to keep them apart, and satisfaction for him could possibly mean death. Cydney and Isaac are so caught up with destroying each other, that Miguel's scheming plots have a chance at being successful. Continuously dancing with the devil has consequences, and for better or worse, rich or poor, Isaac and Cydney will either survive their challenges or fall straight through the gates of hell.

Book Synopsis To Right These Wrongs by : Robert R. Korstad
Download or read book To Right These Wrongs written by Robert R. Korstad and published by Univ of North Carolina Press. This book was released on 2011-01-20 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Governor Terry Sanford established the North Carolina Fund in 1963, he saw it as a way to provide a better life for the "tens of thousands whose family income is so low that daily subsistence is always in doubt." Illustrated with evocative photographs by Billy Barnes, To Right These Wrongs offers a lively account of this pioneering effort in America's War on Poverty. Robert Korstad and James Leloudis describe how the Fund's initial successes grew out of its reliance on private philanthropy and federal dollars and its commitment to the democratic mobilization of the poor. Both were calculated tactics designed to outflank conservative state lawmakers and entrenched local interests that nourished Jim Crow, perpetuated one-party politics, and protected an economy built on cheap labor. By late 1968, when the Fund closed its doors, a resurgent politics of race had gained the advantage, led by a Republican Party that had reorganized itself around opposition to civil rights and aid to the poor. The North Carolina Fund came up short in its battle against poverty, but its story continues to be a source of inspiration and instruction for new generations of Americans.

They do everything together, including bake cookies and have secret sleep overs that Ruby isn't invited to. Twelve-year-old Ruby suspects Grandma Yvette doesn't think she's Jewish enough. The Jewish religion is matrilineal, which means it's passed down from mother to child, and unlike Sarah, Ruby's mother isn't Jewish. But when Sarah starts acting out--trading in her skirts and cardigans for ripped jeans and stained t-shirts, getting in trouble at school--Ruby can't help but be somewhat pleased. Then Sarah suddenly takes things too far, and Ruby is convinced Sarah is possessed by a dybbuk, an evil spirit... that Ruby may or may not have accidentally released from Grandma Yvette's basement. Ruby is determined to save her cousin, but a dybbuk can only be expelled by a "pious Jew." If Ruby isn't Jewish enough for her own grandmother, how can she possibly be Jewish enough to fight a dybbuk?"

Download or read book Inappropriate written by Vi Keeland and published by C. Scott Publishing. This book was released on 2020-01-20 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new, sexy standalone novel from #1 New York Times Bestseller, Vi Keeland. Terminated for inappropriate behavior. I couldn’t believe the letter in my hands. Nine years. Nine damn years I’d worked my butt off for one of the largest companies in America, and I was fired with a form letter when I returned home from a week in Aruba. All because of a video taken when I was on vacation with my friends—a private video made on my private time. Or so I thought… Pissed off, I cracked open a bottle of wine and wrote my own letter to the gazillionaire CEO telling him what I thought of his company and its practices. I didn’t think he’d actually respond. I certainly never thought I’d suddenly become pen pals with the rich jerk. Eventually, he realized I’d been wronged and made sure I got my job back. Only…it wasn’t the only thing Grant Lexington wanted to do for me. But there was no way I was getting involved with my boss’s boss’s boss. Even if he was ridiculously gorgeous, confident, and charming. It would be completely wrong, inappropriate even. Sort of like the video that got me into trouble to begin with. Two wrongs don’t make a right. But sometimes it’s twice as fun.
Download or read book Justice written by Nicholas Wolterstorff and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2010-05-02 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wide-ranging and ambitious, Justice combines moral philosophy and Christian ethics to develop an important theory of rights and of justice as grounded in rights. Nicholas Wolterstorff discusses what it is to have a right, and he locates rights in the respect due the worth of the rights-holder. After contending that socially-conferred rights require the existence of natural rights, he argues that no secular account of natural human rights is successful; he offers instead a theistic account. Wolterstorff prefaces his systematic account of justice as grounded in rights with an exploration of the common claim that rights-talk is inherently individualistic and possessive. He demonstrates that the idea of natural rights originated neither in the Enlightenment nor in the individualistic philosophy of the late Middle Ages, but was already employed by the canon lawyers of the twelfth century. He traces our intuitions about rights and justice back even further, to Hebrew and Christian scriptures. After extensively discussing justice in the Old Testament and the New, he goes on to show why ancient Greek and Roman philosophy could not serve as a framework for a theory of rights. Connecting rights and wrongs to God's relationship with humankind, Justice not only offers a rich and compelling philosophical account of justice, but also makes an important contribution to overcoming the present-day divide between religious discourse and human rights.
