Book excerpt: Virginia Woolf was one of the most influential writers of the twentieth century. With her husband, Leonard Woolf, she started the Hogarth Press in 1917: the list ranged widely in fiction, poetry, politics and psychoanalysis, and published all Virginia Woolf’s own work. Its first publication appeared in 2017: Two Stories, bound in bright Japanese paper, contained a short story from both Virginia and Leonard. Typeset and bound by Virginia, with illustrations by Dora Carrington, 134 copies were printed by Leonard using a small handpress installed in the dining room at Hogarth House, Richmond. To celebrate the 100th anniversary of ‘Publication No. 1’ this new edition of Two Stories takes the original text of Virginia’s story, ‘The Mark on the Wall’ (with illustrations by Dora Carrington), and pairs it with a new story, ‘St Brides Bay’, by Mark Haddon, a lifelong reader of Virginia Woolf. TWO STORIES also includes a portrait of Virginia Woolf by Mark Haddon, and a short introduction from the publisher about the founding of the Press.

Book excerpt: There are two sides to every story. A little girl finds a strange beast in the woods and takes it home as a pet. She feeds it, shows it off to her friends and gives it a hat. But that night it escapes. Then the beast tells the story of being kidnapped by the girl, who forcefed it squirrel food, scared it with a group of beasts and wrapped it in wool. Can the two beasts resolve their differences? An eye-opening story that makes you look at things from a different perspective. 'Roberton's premise is as sublime as it is simple, with a subtle message. [...] Totally delightful.' - Kirkus Reviews

Book excerpt: From the celebrated, award-winning translators of Anna Karenina and War and Peace a lavish, masterfully rendered volume of stories by one of the most influential short fiction writers of all time. Chekhov's genius left an indelible impact on every literary form in which he wrote, but none more so than short fiction. Now, renowned translators and longtime house authors Richard Pevear and Larissa Volokhonsky give us their peerless renderings of fifty-two Chekhov stories--a full deck These stories, which span the full arc of his career, reveal the extraordinary variety and unexpectedness of his work, from the farcically comic to the darkly complex, showing that there is no one type of "Chekhov story." They are populated by a remarkable range of characters who come from all parts of Russia, all walks of life, and who, taken together, have democratized the short story. Included here are a number of never-before-translated stories, including "Reading" and "An Educated Blockhead." Here is a collection that promises profound delight.

Book excerpt: Fiction. Translated by Jessica Sequera. The writing of the late Osvaldo Lamborghini (1940--1985) resists almost any attempt to characterize, let alone summarize. An iconoclastic figure of the Latin American literary milieu of the mid-to-late twentieth century, Lamborghini melded the baroque and the low-brow to often outrageous effect (Bolaño said he could only read a few pages of him at once). Rendered into English for the first time here are two long short stories, The Morning and Just Write Anything!, an accurate sample of his work in much the same way that a bucket of seawater is an accurate sample of the ocean.

Book excerpt: "Perhaps it was the middle of January in the present that I first looked up and saw the mark on the wall." 'The Mark on the Wall' is about a woman sitting in her chair, starring at a mark on the wall, but if you think that is all it is, you are in for a surprise. In a series of stream of consciousness, which Virginia Woolf mastered so well, the narrator contemplates the cause of this unknown mark, and in doing so, reveals much about both herself and the society she is a part of. 'Two Stories' was originally published by Virginia Woolf's and her husband Leonard Woolf's own publishing house, Hogarth Press, in 1917. The book also includes Leonard Woolf's short story 'St Brides Bay'. Adeline Virginia Woolf (1882-1941) was an English writer who, despite growing up in a progressive household, was not allowed an education. When she and her sister moved in with their brothers in a rough London neighborhood, they joined the infamous The Bloomsbury Group, which debated philosophy, art and politics. Woolf's most famous novels include 'Mrs Dalloway' (1925) and 'To the Lighthouse' (1927).

In each story, the narrator creates a central character as a foil for his rich imagination. Can you continue a conversation-game after an interruption of more than two decades? In Spring in Prague the narrator and his Moslem friend Shyam, the publisher of Progressive Islam and a conspirator in an Indonesian coup, meet in Prague after 25 years of silence. Shyam cannot guess that an unusual verbal surprise awaits him. Riks, the perpetual defendant of Riks, is, we learn, vulnerable to questionable company, which causes the narrator to observe, That alone is not so bad, but if youOCOre in the wrong social class itOCOll ruin you.OCO For an author bio and photo, reviews, and a reading sample, visit bosonbooks.com."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Heroes of China’s Great Leap Forward presents contrasting narratives of the most ambitious and disastrous mass movement in modern Chinese history. The objective of the Great Leap, when it was launched in the late 1950s, was to catapult China into the ranks of the great military and industrial powers with no assistance from the outside world; it resulted in a famine that killed tens of millions of the nation’s peasants. Li Zhun’s "A Brief Biography of Li Shuangshuang," written while the movement was underway, celebrates the Great Leap as it was supposed to be: a time of optimism, dynamism, and shared purpose. A spirited young peasant woman, freed from the restrictions of home life, launches a canteen and wins the recognition of authorities and the admiration of her husband. The story—and the film that followed it—made Li Shuangshuang the greatest fictional heroine of the Great Leap. In contrast, Zhang Yigong’s short novel The Story of the Criminal Li Tongzhong, written two decades later, was one of the first works published in China to suggest a much darker side to the Great Leap. A village official leads a raid on a state granary to feed starving peasants; he is later arrested and dies a criminal. Although Zhang stopped short of portraying the horrors of famine, his tone of moral outrage provides a rejoinder to the triumphalism of "Li Shuangshuang." The stories are accompanied by an introduction to the Great Leap and portraits of the two writers, including their recollections of that traumatic time and the creation of their very different heroes.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In writing these two ardently romantic and turbulent tales, Stendhal delved deep into old Italian narratives and into his own impassioned heart. “Vanina Vanini” and “L’abbesse de Castro” abound in the qualities for which the French author remains enduringly popular: his strong-willed, impulsive characters; his dry wit and keen irony; and the sweeping drama of his historical settings. Originally published in the Revue de Paris in 1829, “Vanina Vanini” traces the fortunes of an aristocrat’s daughter who falls in love with a wounded soldier, and prefigures Stendhal’s superb novel, The Red and the Black, which appeared two years later. “L’abbesse de Castro,” published in 1839 under a pseudonym in the prestigious Revue des Deux Mondes, was reputedly derived from Roman and Florentine source manuscripts. Consisting chiefly of Stendhal’s own invention, it recounts the illicit liaison and subsequent trial of an abbess. The only dual-language edition of these stories, this book features an informative introduction and ample footnotes, making it not only a pleasure to read but also a valuable learning and teaching aid for students and teachers of French literature.

Book excerpt: A celebration of Ireland's greatest rugby year Relive, game by game, the key moments in Ireland's historic 2015 Six Nations campaign, which culminated in a nerve-shredding final weekend when both the women's and men's titles were still up for grabs. Through interviews with players like Sean O'Brien, Niamh Briggs, Nora Stapleton and Robbie Henshaw – as well as members of the backroom staff – journalists Kate Rowan and Peter O'Reilly provide a unique glimpse into the mindset of the two camps. Kate looks at recent advances in the Irish women's game, while Peter outlines the transformation in the men's fortunes under Joe Schmidt, 'the best coach in the world'. They highlight the contrasts between the amateur women's and professional men's set-ups and the lifestyles of the players on each team. Six Nations, Two Stories offers unrivalled depth of coverage of a breakthrough Six Nations season: the first time that Ireland won both senior tournaments in one year, renewing optimism in the future of Irish rugby.
