Book Synopsis Babylonian Prayers to Marduk by : Takayoshi Oshima
Download or read book Babylonian Prayers to Marduk written by Takayoshi Oshima and published by Mohr Siebeck. This book was released on 2011 with total page 548 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first comprehensive study of Babylonian prayers dedicated to Marduk, the god of Babylon, since J. Hehn's essay Hymnen und Gebete an Marduk (1905). Marduk was the god of the city of Babylon and was the most important god in Babylonia from the time of Hammurabi (the 18th century BCE) onwards. In this book, Takayoshi Oshima presents an up-to-date catalog of all known Babylonian prayers dedicated to Marduk from different historical periods and offers critical editions of 31 ancient texts based on newly identified manuscripts and a collation of the previously published manuscripts. The author also discusses various aspects of Akkadian prayers to different deities and the ancient belief in the mechanism of punishment and redemption by Marduk.
Book Synopsis Sumerian Literary Texts in the Schøyen Collection by : Christopher Metcalf
Download or read book Sumerian Literary Texts in the Schøyen Collection written by Christopher Metcalf and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2019-08-15 with total page 169 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first in a series of volumes publishing the Sumerian literary texts in the Schøyen Collection, this book makes available, for the first time, editions of seventeen cuneiform tablets, dating to ca. 2000 BCE and containing works of Sumerian religious poetry. Edited, translated, and annotated by Christopher Metcalf, these poems shed light on the interaction between cult, scholarship, and scribal culture in Mesopotamia in the early second millennium BCE. The present volume contains fourteen songs composed in praise of the various gods of the Mesopotamian pantheon; it is believed that these songs were typically performed in temple cults. Among them are a song in praise of Sud, goddess of the ancient Mesopotamian city Shuruppak; a song describing the statue of the protective goddess Lamma-saga in the “Sacred City” temple complex at Girsu; and a previously unknown hymn dedicated to the creator god Enki. Each text is provided in transliteration and translation and accompanied by hand-copies and images of the tablets themselves. Expertly contextualizing each song in Babylonian religious and literary history, this thoroughly competent editio princeps will prove a valuable tool for scholars interested in the literary and religious traditions of ancient Mesopotamia.

Book Synopsis The Routledge Handbook of Emotions in the Ancient Near East by : Karen Sonik
Download or read book The Routledge Handbook of Emotions in the Ancient Near East written by Karen Sonik and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-08-30 with total page 1074 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This in-depth exploration of emotions in the ancient Near East illuminates the rich and complex worlds of feelings encompassed within the literary and material remains of this remarkable region, home to many of the world’s earliest cities and empires, and lays critical foundations for future study. Thirty-four chapters by leading international scholars, including philologists, art historians, and archaeologists, examine the ways in which emotions were conceived, experienced, and expressed by the peoples of the ancient Near East, with particular attention to Mesopotamia, Anatolia, and the kingdom of Ugarit, from the Late Uruk through to the Neo-Babylonian Period (ca. 3300–539 BCE). The volume is divided into two parts: the first addressing theoretical and methodological issues through thematic analyses and the second encompassing corpus-based approaches to specific emotions. Part I addresses emotions and history, defining the terms, materialization and material remains, kings and the state, and engaging the gods. Part II explores happiness and joy; fear, terror, and awe; sadness, grief, and depression; contempt, disgust, and shame; anger and hate; envy and jealousy; love, affection, and admiration; and pity, empathy, and compassion. Numerous sub-themes threading through the volume explore such topics as emotional expression and suppression in relation to social status, gender, the body, and particular social and spatial conditions or material contexts. The Routledge Handbook of Emotions in the Ancient Near East is an invaluable and accessible resource for Near Eastern studies and adjacent fields, including Classical, Biblical, and medieval studies, and a must-read for scholars, students, and others interested in the history and cross-cultural study of emotions.

Book Synopsis Tradition and the Poetics of Innovation by : Nicole Maria Brisch
Download or read book Tradition and the Poetics of Innovation written by Nicole Maria Brisch and published by Ugarit Verlag. This book was released on 2007 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: N. Brisch examines the literary legacy of the dynasty of Larsa, terminated by Hammurabi of Babylon in 1763 B.C.E. "The dynasties of Isin and Larsa -- fierce rivals in contending for hegemony over Babylonia -- rarely or never acknowledged their Amorite origins openly, but instead affiliated themselves with Sumerian traditions of royal legitimization. This becomes apparent in the literary texts of the Isin and Larsa rulers, which in all but a few cases were composed in Sumerian, a language that to the best of our knowledge was no longer spoken by this time. Thus, the choice of Sumerian for these compositions is in itself significant. It is only with the rulers of the first dynasty of Babylon (...) that we see the beginnings of a movement away from the Sumerian tradition and the replacement by Akkadian as the language of choice in literary texts. The Larsa dynasty, or more precisely its literary heritage, is positioned at the brink of this change from a certain tradition, for example, visible in the heroic literature on Sumerian kings, to certain new developments (...). Because of these innovations the Larsa royal literatur occupies a unique position within the corpus of Sumerian royal literature, which is often perceived as particularly traditional. -- The study of the literary, historical and linguistic contexts of the Larsa Court Poetry is supplemented by the editions of 14 royal hymns and royal letters mainly of Sin-iddinam and Rim-Sin.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This close synchronic analysis of Exodus 1-2 looks at how the pericope's structure, language, focalization and management of information form its conception and judgement of its events and characters. A coherence of concerns is detectable in Exodus 1-2 with allusions to Genesis and the later chapters of Exodus. One chapter is assigned to each of seven narrative unities and deals in various ways with its narrative problems. The resulting eclectic choice of analytical tools includes the study of Proppian structural functions, repetition, public rhetoric, narrative speeds, order and symbolism.
