Book excerpt: Two men meet for a pint in a Dublin pub. They chew the fat, set the world to rights, take the piss… They talk about their wives, their kids, their kids’ pets, their football teams and – this being Ireland in 2011–12 –about the euro, the crash, the presidential election, the Queen’s visit. But these men are not parochial or small-minded; one of them knows where to find the missing Colonel Gaddafi (he’s working as a cleaner at Dublin Airport); they worry about Greek debt, the IMF and the bondholders ( whatever they might be); in their fashion, they mourn the deaths of Whitney Houston, Donna Summer, Davy Jones and Robin Gibb; and they ask each other the really important questions like ‘Would you ever let yourself be digitally enhanced?’ Inspired by a year’s worth of news, Two Pints distils the essence of Roddy Doyle’s comic genius. This book shares the concision of a collection of poems, and the timing of a virtuoso comedian.

Kennedy, from India to the Australian outback. In two volumes of masterful storytelling he creates ironic, playful, and acerbic historical miniatures - a quixotic series of reconstructions woven into a helix in which the same historical figures reappear in radically different contexts as their narratives intersect with the larger picture.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rediscover the lost words of an ancient land in this new and updated edition of an international bestseller. Most people associate Britain and Ireland with the English language, a vast, sprawling linguistic tree with roots in Latin, French, and German, and branches spanning the world, from Australia and India to North America. But the inhabitants of these islands originally spoke another tongue. Look closely enough and English contains traces of the Celtic soil from which it sprung, found in words like bog, loch, cairn and crag. Today, this heritage can be found nowhere more powerfully than in modern-day Gaelic. In Thirty-Two Words for Field Manchán Magan explores the enchantment, sublime beauty and sheer oddness of a 3000-year-old lexicon. Imbuing the natural world with meaning and magic, it evokes a time-honoured way of life, from its 32 separate words for a field, to terms like loisideach (a place with a lot of kneading troughs), bróis (whiskey for a horseman at a wedding), and iarmhaireacht (the loneliness you feel when you are the only person awake at cockcrow). Told through stories collected from Magan's own life and travels, Thirty-Two Words for Field is an enthralling celebration of Irish words, and a testament to the indelible relationship between landscape, culture and language.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It was so quiet, so dark, and so cold yet I sensed myself sweating, A loud bang went off from close by, someone called out in pain! Things fell onto me so I brushed them off, tried my best to focus but my vison was very blurred, things didn’t make sense, where was I, I couldn’t think for some reason, felt a little dizzy for some reason like I was drunk, My legs and arms felt heavy when I tried to move them, I wiped my eyes and they stung hard, stuff ran down my face that didn’t feel like rain and didn’t taste like rain, Foreign voices I could hear, more loud bangs went off from close by, Another call from someone in pain was heard, I tried to pull myself up but slipped and slipped again, The dark sky lit up and I wiped my eyes the best I could, 2 The rain I thought was falling on me wasn’t rain, it was black and thick, it smelled of oil, It went into my mouth so I spat it out, How was it raining oil, dreaming I thought I was, just in a bad dream and would wake up I was waiting for, I wasn’t dreaming, I was awake, lying in a ditch soaked in oil in the night somewhere but where somewhere was I didn’t know, “Shift over mate” I heard someone announce and felt someone push up against me with force, I swung round with the rifle I was holding, “Easy with that thing pal, it’s only me, we got big problems out there, Charlie team took a battering, minor casualties, the gun team are getting low on ammo, hey, where’s Sid bro” the same person asked after nudging me hard in the side, Without thinking I brought the end of the rifle up and hit whoever was talking too me across the jaw and scrambled out of the hole I was in, Losing my grip I slipped into another hole and bumped into another person, The rifle I had was not with me anymore, I looked about anxiously for something to defend myself, The person next to me didn’t move, 3 Someone called out from somewhere! The noise of shooting carried on followed by heavier shooting like from a machine gun, the black rain still fell down on me obscuring my vision, Bullets hit the sides of the hole I was in, the person who was next to me took a load of bullets or something else that pushed him hard against me, We both slipped further into the slipper mud and oil filled hole we were in, He was heavy and pushed me further into the bottom of the hole, The dark sky lit up followed by a very loud explosive sound, The ground around us shook, the person who was half on top of me took the impact from whatever was flying around, I went into the oily muddy water at the bottom of the hole, The weight of whoever was on top of me pushed me further down, Oil, water and mud went into my mouth and everywhere else, I couldn’t move this person off me and gasped for air, Strange thoughts went through my mind, was this the end I thought to myself? 4 With all my strength I pushed hard on the body that was on top and drowning me, I managed to get my head up out of the oily mud and gasped for air, More bullets bounced around the walls of the hole, someone called out in pain, another explosion went off close by that shook the ground hard, I went back under the mud again and fought hard to push the weight off me, With one last effort of strength I pushed my arm out of the mud in an attempt to grab hold of anything, Someone grabbed my hand and pulled hard, “Got you brother, we got you know mate” I heard someone called out! I woke and opened my eyes to see a pretty lady leaning over me, “It’s ok darling, you safe with me, another bad dream my darling, just a bad dream, I am here with you” I heard her say softly as she held my hand and pulled me from the floor back into bed, I looked hard at her and realized this lady was my wife and it was just another bad dream, She comforted me as I led shaking and covered in sweat, The dreams continue, they never go away.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For as far back as school registers can take us, the most prestigious education available to any Irish child was to be found outside Ireland. Catholics of Consequence traces, for the first time, the transnational education, careers, and lives of more than two thousand Irish boys and girls who attended Catholic schools in England, France, Belgium, and elsewhere in the second half of the nineteenth century. There was a long tradition of Irish Anglicans, Protestants, and Catholics sending their children abroad for the majority of their formative years. However, as the cultural nationalism of the Irish revival took root at the end of the nineteenth century, Irish Catholics who sent their children to school in Britain were accused of a pro-Britishness that crystallized into still recognisable terms of insult such as West Briton, Castle Catholic, Squireen, and Seoinin. This concept has an enduring resonance in Ireland, but very few publications have ever interrogated it. Catholics of Consequence endeavours to analyse the education and subsequent lives of the Irish children that received this type of transnational education. It also tells the story of elite education in Ireland, where schools such as Clongowes Wood College and Castleknock College were rooted in the continental Catholic tradition, but also looked to public schools in England as exemplars. Taken together the book tells the story of an Irish Catholic elite at once integrated and segregated within what was then the most powerful state in the world.

Book excerpt: Life would never again be the same for the O'Kelleher family, after the conquering of Ireland by the English butcher, Sir Oliver Cromwell, (circa1649), and the brutal consequences of his occupation. These British barbarians, who after murdering several of the O'Kelleher family, sent the remaining O'Kelleher brothers and sisters, together with some 80,000 Irish intellectuals, to the British West Indies as slaves. Then, 'Devine Providence' or fate intervened, as it sometimes does, and after an enemy of the British, sank the slave ship, the O'Kelleher's were on, they managed to find refuge on a Dutch held island. After serving five years in the Dutch navy as commandos, an opportunity presented itself, and the O'Kelleher brothers returned to Ireland, seeking their revenge on Oliver Cromwell's butchering army. As he stepped onto the shores of Ireland, Lawrence O'Kelleher, clan chieftain of the O'Kellehers', shouted, "Tis not us, but ye', who should be cowering, for we come like thieves in the night, seeking our revenge." The 'troubles' were never ending. They are like a sore, whose scab, continues to bleed, after being picked at. "They would never heal, and they never have!"

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From as early as the middle of the 16th century Englishmen were interested in the possibility of exploring the fabled resources of the great river of the Amazons. During the first half of the 17th century English and Irish projectors made persistent efforts to maintain trading factories and plantation there. From at least 1612 to 1632 they inhabited settlements along the north channel of the estuary from Cabo do Norte to the Equator, making very considerable profits from tobacco, dyes and hardwoods. The profitability of their holdings was such that, when the Portuguese made the river too risky for foreign interlopers after 1630, former English and Irish planters sought to return there under licence of first the Spanish and then the Portuguese crown. The Irish may actually have been permitted to do so in the mid-1640s. Almost half a century has elapsed since J.A. Williamson and Aubrey Gwynne first published studies of these colonies. New material from English, Portuguese and Spanish archives has now made it possible to re-evaluate their significance. The Irish ventures, although begun in partnership with the English, can now be seen to have developed into a quite distinct initiative. They are probably the earliest example of independent Irish colonial projects in the New World. By the early 1620s the Irish were known for their experience of the river and their expertise in Indian languages, proving far more efficient in their approach to exploiting Amazonia than the English. The tenacity with which both groups, the English and the Irish, pursued their goal of settlement also forces us to re-assess assumptions about the seemingly 'inevitable' priority of North America for such activity in this period. The Amazon undertakings were in many ways more hopeful than contemporaneous enterprises in North America. They failed because their interests were sacrificed, at critical junctures, to the foreign policy priorities of the English crown, not because the Amazon was an unsuitable environment for northern Europeans.
