Book Synopsis The Synchronized Society by : Randall Patnode
Download or read book The Synchronized Society written by Randall Patnode and published by Rutgers University Press. This book was released on 2023-03-17 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Synchronized Society traces the history of the synchronous broadcast experience of the twentieth century and the transition to the asynchronous media that dominate today. Broadcasting grew out of the latent desire by nineteenth-century industrialists, political thinkers, and social reformers to tame an unruly society by controlling how people used their time. The idea manifested itself in the form of the broadcast schedule, a managed flow of information and entertainment that required audiences to be in a particular place – usually the home – at a particular time and helped to create “water cooler” moments, as audiences reflected on their shared media texts. Audiences began disconnecting from the broadcast schedule at the end of the twentieth century, but promoters of social media and television services still kept audiences under control, replacing the schedule with surveillance of media use. Author Randall Patnode offers compelling new insights into the intermingled roles of broadcasting and industrial/post-industrial work and how Americans spend their time.
Download or read book Marine Rifleman written by Wesley L. Fox and published by Potomac Books, Inc.. This book was released on 2011 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Intrigued by the mystique and challenge of the Marine Corps, eighteen-year-old Wesley Fox enlisted in the summer of 1950, shortly after the outbreak of the Korean War. He saw action with the First Marine Division in Korea and was wounded in 1951. After Korea, Fox advanced steadily in the enlisted ranks, reaching the rank of first sergeant, and, early in the Vietnam War, he received an appointment as second lieutenant. While serving as a rifle company commander with the Third Marine Division in 1969, he was twice wounded in a vicious battle during Operation Dewey Canyon. Early in this battle, every member of the company s command staff was either wounded or killed. In an all-or-nothing effort led by First Lieutenant Fox, his company repulsed the attack of a much larger enemy force and then counterattacked with devastating results. For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty, Fox received the Medal of Honor, which President Richard Nixon presented to him at the White House. Despite the personal sacrifice and frequent danger, Fox resolutely embraced the ethos of the Marine Corps, risking his life on numerous occasions and emerging as a leader in one of the most respected and feared fighting organizations in the world. Readers interested in U.S. military history from the second half of the twentieth century, in the Marine Corps, and in inspiring tales of personal achievement will find plenty of each in Fox s extraordinary memoir."

Book excerpt: MORE GRIPPING, NO-HOLDS-BARRED LRRP ACCOUNTS FROM THE FRONT LINES During the Vietnam War, few combat operations were more dangerous than LRRP/Ranger missions. Vastly outnumbered, the patrols faced overwhelming odds as they fought to carry out their missions, from gathering intelligence, acting as hunter/killer teams, or engaging in infamous “Parakeet” flights– actions in which teams were dropped into enemy areas and expected to “develop” the situation. PHANTOM WARRIORS II presents heart-pounding, edge-of-your-seat stories from individuals and teams. These elite warriors relive sudden deadly firefights, prolonged gun battles with large enemy forces, desperate attempts to help fallen comrades, and the sheer hell of bloody, no-quarter combat. The LRRP accounts here are a testament to the courage, guts, daring, and sacrifice of the men who willingly faced death every day of their lives in Vietnam.

Book Synopsis Summary of Keith William Nolan's Ripcord by : Everest Media,
Download or read book Summary of Keith William Nolan's Ripcord written by Everest Media, and published by Everest Media LLC. This book was released on 2022-03-31T22:59:00Z with total page 63 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Please note: This is a companion version & not the original book. Sample Book Insights: #1 The NVA drew more fire than they delivered. The 105mm howitzers of Captain David F. Rich’s B/2319th and the 155s of Captain Gordon A. Baxendale’s A/211th Field Artillery were booming in response to the NVA. #2 The allies had the firepower, but the terrain favored the enemy, who remained mostly unseen under the jungle canopy as they alternated their fire from numerous locations. The key terrain features around Hill 927, atop which Ripcord was built, included Hill 805, situated across a sharp draw from the southeast end of the firebase ridgeline at four o’clock. #3 The enemy concentrated his fire on Captain Rich’s battery on the highest part of Ripcord. The artillerymen continued to fire, and the enemy only put about thirty rounds in the air, half of which overshot Ripcord. #4 The attack on Hill 805 was carried out by Company B, commanded by Captain William J. Williams. The troops were not anxious to go into battle under him, but they had to obey his orders. He was a pugnacious, highly experienced combat officer.

Book excerpt: Novel based upon the author's experiences traveling and surfing after he quit law in New Zealand, and his relationship with a beautiful photographer. Book 1 of The Great Escape series. "So there we sat in the plush restaurant, served by friendly waiters all dressed in white, as the sun started to set on the Atlantic Ocean through the large windows and we drank Portuguese red wine and talked about our plans and our dreams as happy Portuguese songs played in the background. It seemed right at that moment that the world was indeed our oyster. Cody and I were finally free and in love. We had done it. It was hard to believe we had and I thought back at those times when we were both huddling for warmth back in the Pit and we had first talked and fantasized about Portugal. We ate and drank on and clichés became our friends, as did our reflections in the glass sitting next to us, smiling and toasting back at us."
