Mason in German prison camps after his B-17 “Flying Fortress” was shot down by the Germans in France in 1944, the final year of World War II. The log follows Mason from the day his plane crashed until his liberation in April, 1945, and his return home to the United States. Included are such topics as medical treatment and rehabilitation for wounded prisoners of the Germans, life in Stalag Luft III, a difficult long march in an arctic winter to another camp, the travails of prisoners in the overcrowded, filthy camp at Moosburg, critical food shortages, and the arrival of General George Patton with the liberating forces. Mason was an amateur artist and illustrated his journal with moving depictions of prison life and comradeship. This book shows U.S. airmen demonstrating grace and courage under pressure and meeting every challenge that their imprisonment presented.

Book excerpt: Take a coin. Toss it in the air. Now call it. Heads? Tails? What if you could choose both sides? Elisa Morgan birthed the "prayer coin" idea as she was struggling in her own prayer life. Should she be blatantly honest about her desires or just leave everything to God and let Him lead? An epiphany came when Elisa noticed how Jesus prayed in the Garden of Gethsemane: "Take this cup from me; yet not my will, but yours be done" (Luke 22:42). Jesus Christ begged for relief from the trial He faced, while utterly complying with what He knew the Father's will to be. Honesty and abandon--in the same breath. Elisa discovered that Jesus invites us to both. And the emotional back-and-forth, between full-out honesty and "giving it up" in abandon, actually drew her closer to God. If Jesus--our Savior, Mentor, and Friend--could pray both sides of the prayer coin, could we as well?

Book excerpt: The Gold Coins is based on real event. A few names have been changed. Some of the places have been renamed. Much happened exactly as described. In other cases, I fictionalized some of the details to provide clarity. I also took liberty to fill in the blanks of my brain whenever I forgot some details. It is my hope that you will accept there is more to our existence than what we can see with our physical eyes. We tend to be skeptical about things we do not understand. That is healthy; however, I hope, you also possess a healthy curiosity and vivid imagination. Both are powerful tools that can open up a new world for you to explore. I am blessed to be connected with many people who proudly embrace woo woo-ness. These are every day, ordinary people. Some are wealthy. Some are working class. Some live hand to mouth as the spirit leads them. All live life to the fullest. Likewise, I am connected with religious people Christians, Muslims, Buddhist, Hindu, Jewish. And, then I am connected with those who only believe in the science. Most of the time I only understand a nth of what they are saying but I appreciate that nth because it shows me yet another aspect of the Universe. It is because of the teachers in my life that I was finally able to write this book. I am a woo woo Christian that also believes in science. We only know a small portion of all there is to know and by connecting with each other, accepting each other, loving each other, forgiving each other and supporting each other will we be able to continue to exist as the human race. Be well and enjoy this gift of life!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During World War II, Allied casualty rates in the air were high. Of the roughly 125,000 who served as aircrew with Bomber Command, 59,423 were killed or missing and presumed killed—a fatality rate of 45.5%. With odds like that, it would be no surprise if there were as few atheists in cockpits as there were in foxholes; and indeed, many airmen faced their dangerous missions with beliefs and rituals ranging from the traditional to the outlandish. Military historian S. P. MacKenzie considers this phenomenon in Flying against Fate, a pioneering study of the important role that superstition played in combat flier morale among the Allies in World War II. Mining a wealth of documents as well as a trove of published and unpublished memoirs and diaries, MacKenzie examines the myriad forms combat fliers' superstitions assumed, from jinxes to premonitions. Most commonly, airmen carried amulets or talismans—lucky boots or a stuffed toy; a coin whose year numbers added up to thirteen; counterintuitively, a boomerang. Some performed rituals or avoided other acts, e.g., having a photo taken before a flight. Whatever seemed to work was worth sticking with, and a heightened risk often meant an upsurge in superstitious thought and behavior. MacKenzie delves into behavior analysis studies to help explain the psychology behind much of the behavior he documents—not slighting the large cohort of crew members and commanders who demurred. He also looks into the ways in which superstitious behavior was tolerated or even encouraged by those in command who saw it as a means of buttressing morale. The first in-depth exploration of just how varied and deeply felt superstitious beliefs were to tens of thousands of combat fliers, Flying against Fate expands our understanding of a major aspect of the psychology of war in the air and of World War II.

Book excerpt: Knight Templar Allain de Bures had finally returned home to Jerusalem after his six-and-a-half-year adventurous journey. All he wanted was to rest a bit and have some conversations with old friends. However, as always, fate drew him right into the midst of trouble. When mysterious strangers in strange attire attempted to assassinate the Grand Master, Allain de Bures found himself plunged into an adventure where he would be caught between formidable rivals like Salahaddin Ayyubi, Hasan Sabbah, and other enemies. He thought it would be the kind of adventure where everything stemmed from the usual causes, but this time, things were extremely complicated. Simultaneously, someone had started killing elderly people well-known to Jerusalem and the knights. Allain de Bures was determined to solve the gruesome murders that emerged in the old streets of Jerusalem, under the shadow of the Knights Templar. Alongside him were his silent servant Eric, Charlotte seeking revenge for her father, and Bernard de Sonnac, who had only learned to be a good knight until now. In this complex, dark path, they would all somehow become tainted, and each would have to make sacrifices. For the shadowy road they walked would also determine the fate of brotherhood...

Book excerpt: In recent years, Islamic law, or Shari'a, has been appropriated as a tool of modernity in the Muslim world and in the West and has become highly politicised in consequence. Wael Hallaq's magisterial overview of Shari'a sets the record straight by examining the doctrines and practices of Islamic law within the context of its history, and by showing how it functioned within pre-modern Islamic societies as a moral imperative. In so doing, Hallaq takes the reader on an epic journey tracing the history of Islamic law from its beginnings in seventh-century Arabia, through its development and transformation under the Ottomans, and across lands as diverse as India, Africa and South-East Asia, to the present. In a remarkably fluent narrative, the author unravels the complexities of his subject to reveal a love and deep knowledge of the law which will inform, engage and challenge the reader.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The miracle stories surrounding Sainte Foy form one of the most complete sets of material relating to a medieval saint's cult and its practices. Pamela Sheingorn's superb translation from the Medieval Latin texts now makes this literature available in English. The Book of Sainte Foy recounts the virgin saint's martyrdom in the third century (Passio), the theft of her relics in the late ninth century by the monks of the monastery at Conques (Translatio), and her diverse miracles (Liber miraculorum); also included is a rendering of the Proven&cceil;al Chanson de Sainte Foy, translated by Robert L. A. Clark. The miracles distinguish Sainte Foy as an unusual and highly individualistic child saint displaying a fondness for gold and pretty things, as well as a penchant for playing practical jokes on her worshippers. In his record of Sainte Foy, Bernard of Angers, the eleventh-century author of the first parts of the Liber miraculorum, emphasized the saint's "unheard of" miracles, such as replacing missing body parts and bringing dead animals back to life. The introduction to the volume situates Sainte Foy in the history in the history of hagiography and places the saint and her monastery in the social context of the high Middle Ages. Sheingorn also evokes the rugged landscape of south central France, the picturesque village of Conques on the pilgrimage road, and, most important, the golden, jewel-encrusted reliquary statue that medieval believers saw as the embodiment of Sainte Foy's miracle-working power. In no other book will readers enjoy such a comprehensive portrait of Sainte Foy and the culture that nurtured her. Pamela Sheingorn is Professor of Art at Baruch College, CUNY, and Professor of Medieval Studies at the Graduate School, CUNY.
