Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a bi-national portrait of dementia in the rapidly aging Mexican-origin population in Mexico and the United States. It provides a comprehensive overview of critical conceptual and methodological issues in the study of cognitive aging and related mental and physical conditions. The book examines the sources of vulnerability and their consequences for Mexican-origin and for “aging in place”. By providing a combination of new knowledge, empirical evidence, and fresh approaches of dementia support in later life, this book will contribute to moving the field of Mexican-origin aging and health forward. By focusing on the serious challenges in old-age support for older people with dementia and neurocognitive disorders in two different contexts, this book will deepen academics, researchers, students and young investigators understanding of what is necessary to achieve optional care.

Insightful and creative practitioners provide current accounts and case examples from their work in a variety of settings. The material includes both micro and macro practice and offers a focus on advanced specialty practice while also providing an advanced generalist model. All the chapters have been rewritten and updated by adding related additional readings and websites. Six new chapters have been added on sensory impairment, HIV/AIDS, elder abuse, community-assisted living, rural elderly, retirement, and volunteerism. "Social Work Practice with the Elderly" offers an exciting collection of well-crafted readings and will be useful for any social work student at the undergraduate or graduate level. It will also be a valuable resource for those in other helping professions who work side by side with social workers in this field: nurses, physiotherapists, music and art therapists, psychologists, physicians, recreational therapists, speech and language therapists, and clergy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Keith Payne begins by asking, "Did we really learn how to deter predictably and reliably during the Cold War?" He answers cautiously in the negative, pointing out that we know only that our policies toward the Soviet Union did not fail. What we can be more certain of, in Payne's view, is that such policies will almost assuredly fail in the Second Nuclear Age -- a period in which direct nuclear threat between superpowers has been replaced by threats posed by regional "rogue" powers newly armed with chemical, biological, or nuclear weapons. The fundamental problem with deterrence theory is that is posits a rational -- hence predictable -- opponent. History frequently demonstrates the opposite. Payne argues that as the one remaining superpower, the United States needs to be more flexible in its approach to regional powers.
