Book Synopsis THE VALUES OF THE TWO ANTHEMS AND THE PLEDGE TO NIGERIA by : Dipo Toby Alakija
Download or read book THE VALUES OF THE TWO ANTHEMS AND THE PLEDGE TO NIGERIA written by Dipo Toby Alakija and published by Calvary Rock Resource. This book was released on with total page 41 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most of Nigerian citizens are not informed about the National Value System which is partly constructed with the use of The Pledge, the new and old Anthems. These uninformed citizens, including most leaders are the ones deforming the nation. Thus out of sheer arrogance or ignorance or negligence, they constantly break the promises they make to the nation while most political and other leaders consistently violate the oaths they take before they assume offices. Most citizens, especially youths do not realize that their failures to fulfill The Pledge often result into breaking part of either Criminal or Civil Law. Consequently, malpractices that range from cheating during the examinations to electoral fraud seem to have grown into bacteria that kill patriotic spirit of the nation. Invariably, the same bacteria also give births to vices and crimes which are the causes of economic and political catastrophes. This book which is designed to be studied by both youths and adults provides insights into the National Value System and interprets the meanings of the two anthems and the pledge to Nigeria. Through their interpretations, the author is able to explain that Nigerian forefathers intended to characterize citizens as patriotic, responsible and reasonable members of the society at the earliest stage of their lives.

Download or read book Anthem written by Ayn Rand and published by Ayn Rand Institute Press. This book was released on 2021-07-07 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: About this Edition This 2021-2022 Digital Student Edition of Ayn Rand's Anthem was created for teachers and students receiving free novels from the Ayn Rand Institute, and includes a historic Q&A with Ayn Rand that cannot be found in any other edition of Anthem. In this Q&A from 1979, Rand responds to questions about Anthem sent to her by a high school classroom. About Anthem Anthem is Ayn Rand’s “hymn to man’s ego.” It is the story of one man’s rebellion against a totalitarian, collectivist society. Equality 7-2521 is a young man who yearns to understand “the Science of Things.” But he lives in a bleak, dystopian future where independent thought is a crime and where science and technology have regressed to primitive levels. All expressions of individualism have been suppressed in the world of Anthem; personal possessions are nonexistent, individual preferences are condemned as sinful and romantic love is forbidden. Obedience to the collective is so deeply ingrained that the very word “I” has been erased from the language. In pursuit of his quest for knowledge, Equality 7-2521 struggles to answer the questions that burn within him — questions that ultimately lead him to uncover the mystery behind his society’s downfall and to find the key to a future of freedom and progress. Anthem anticipates the theme of Rand’s first best seller, The Fountainhead, which she stated as “individualism versus collectivism, not in politics, but in man’s soul.”
Book Synopsis A History of Music at Christ Church Cathedral, Dublin by : Barra Boydell
Download or read book A History of Music at Christ Church Cathedral, Dublin written by Barra Boydell and published by Boydell Press. This book was released on 2004 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Christ Church cathedral is an Anglican cathedral in a catholic country. Musical and archival sources (the most extensive for any Irish cathedral) provide a unique perspective on the history of music in Ireland. Christ Church has had a complex and varied history as the cathedral church of Dublin, one of two Anglican cathedrals in the capital of a predominantly Catholic country and the church of the British administration in Ireland before1922. An Irish cathedral within the English tradition, yet through much of its history it was essentially an English cathedral in a foreign land. With close musical links to cathedrals in England, to St Patrick's cathedral in Dublin, and to the city's wider political and cultural life, Christ Church has the longest documented music history of any Irish institution, providing a unique perspective on the history of music in Ireland. Barra Boydell, a leading authority on Irish music history, has written a detailed study drawing on the most extensive musical and archival sources existing for any Irish cathedral. The choir, its composers and musicians, repertoire and organs are discussed within the wider context of city and state, and of the religious and political dynamics which have shaped Anglo-Irish relationships since medieval times. More than just a history of music at one cathedral, this book makesan important contribution to English cathedral music studies as well as to Irish musical and cultural history. BARRA BOYDELL is Senior Lecturer in Music, National University of Ireland, Maynooth.

Book Synopsis Dying, Death, Burial and Commemoration in Reformation Europe by : Elizabeth C. Tingle
Download or read book Dying, Death, Burial and Commemoration in Reformation Europe written by Elizabeth C. Tingle and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-03-09 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years, the rituals and beliefs associated with the end of life and the commemoration of the dead have increasingly been identified as of critical importance in understanding the social and cultural impact of the Reformation. The associated processes of dying, death and burial inevitably generated heightened emotion and a strong concern for religious propriety: the ways in which funerary customs were accepted, rejected, modified and contested can therefore grant us a powerful insight into the religious and social mindset of individuals, communities, Churches and even nation states in the post-reformation period. This collection provides an historiographical overview of recent work on dying, death and burial in Reformation and Counter-Reformation Europe and draws together ten essays from historians, literary scholars, musicologists and others working at the cutting edge of research in this area. As well as an interdisciplinary perspective, it also offers a broad geographical and confessional context, ranging across Catholic and Protestant Europe, from Scotland, England and the Holy Roman Empire to France, Spain and Ireland. The essays update and augment the body of literature on dying, death and disposal with recent case studies, pointing to future directions in the field. The volume is organised so that its contents move dynamically across the rites of passage, from dying to death, burial and the afterlife. The importance of spiritual care and preparation of the dying is one theme that emerges from this work, extending our knowledge of Catholic ars moriendi into Protestant Britain. Mourning and commemoration; the fate of the soul and its post-mortem management; the political uses of the dead and their resting places, emerge as further prominent themes in this new research. Providing contrasts and comparisons across different European regions and across Catholic and Protestant regions, the collection contributes to and extends the existing literature on this important historiographical theme.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A detective’s search for a missing friend “careens ahead with the speed and promise of danger of the Indy 500” (The Washington Post Book World). With a genius IQ, a past career as a circus acrobat, and a black belt in karate, criminology professor Dr. Robert Frederickson—better known as “Mongo the Magnificent”—has a decidedly unusual background for a private investigator. He also just so happens to be a dwarf. Mongo’s friend and sensei, Veil Kendry, is pretty magnificent himself. A devoted martial arts instructor and extremely successful abstract artist, Veil single-handedly transformed his shady neighborhood in New York City’s Lower East Side into a safe haven from crime and corruption. But when Mongo enters Veil’s abandoned apartment and finds a bullet hole, a cryptic oil painting, and an envelope addressed to him containing $10,000, he starts to worry that Veil’s reputation as a vigilante has gotten him into the worst sort of trouble. Determined to find his friend, Mongo attempts to rule out any enemies from Veil’s past—details of which Veil has never shared with him. But as he uncovers the shocking truth of Veil’s time in the Vietnam War—participating in dangerous CIA missions under the call sign “Archangel”—Mongo soon finds enemies aplenty, ones that will do anything to make sure the past remains a secret . . . In addition to creating “the most engaging detective in decades,” author George C. Chesbro introduces the character of Veil Kendry, who would go on to have his own series (Library Journal). Two Songs This Archangel Sings is the 5th book in the Mongo Mysteries, but you may enjoy reading the series in any order.

Book Synopsis Anger and Forgiveness by : Martha C. Nussbaum
Download or read book Anger and Forgiveness written by Martha C. Nussbaum and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2016-04-01 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Anger is not just ubiquitous, it is also popular. Many people think it is impossible to care sufficiently for justice without anger at injustice. Many believe that it is impossible for individuals to vindicate their own self-respect or to move beyond an injury without anger. To not feel anger in those cases would be considered suspect. Is this how we should think about anger, or is anger above all a disease, deforming both the personal and the political? In this wide-ranging book, Martha C. Nussbaum, one of our leading public intellectuals, argues that anger is conceptually confused and normatively pernicious. It assumes that the suffering of the wrongdoer restores the thing that was damaged, and it betrays an all-too-lively interest in relative status and humiliation. Studying anger in intimate relationships, casual daily interactions, the workplace, the criminal justice system, and movements for social transformation, Nussbaum shows that anger's core ideas are both infantile and harmful. Is forgiveness the best way of transcending anger? Nussbaum examines different conceptions of this much-sentimentalized notion, both in the Jewish and Christian traditions and in secular morality. Some forms of forgiveness are ethically promising, she claims, but others are subtle allies of retribution: those that exact a performance of contrition and abasement as a condition of waiving angry feelings. In general, she argues, a spirit of generosity (combined, in some cases, with a reliance on impartial welfare-oriented legal institutions) is the best way to respond to injury. Applied to the personal and the political realms, Nussbaum's profoundly insightful and erudite view of anger and forgiveness puts both in a startling new light.
