Book excerpt: It wasn't until an independent reader of this book told me, "Stanley, you're like a real life Forrest Gump—except without the mental impairment!" that I decided to title my book, Twixt 6 & 90: Planes, Dames, and Brushes with Fame. It's true that I've enjoyed a number of encounters with people who left indelible marks on history, such as Admiral "Bull" Halsey, George H. W. Bush, and Sam Walton, to name a few. However, I do not consider my life full because of my happenstance brushes with famous or even infamous people; rather, my life has been truly blessed by wonderful people of whom the world has never heard. This is the story of a country boy from a small town in rural Ohio who looked up at an airplane at the age of 6 and just knew he was born to fly. This book chronicles a 90-year journey from the Ohio farmlands to the ends of the earth. It spans the Great Depression, World War II, the Cold War, and the explosion of air travel that followed. It's a story of the hero in Everyman.

Book excerpt: This book is essential reading for an understanding of Conrad's fiction both as a product of the political, social and intellectual forces dominating the period 1870-1920, and of the pressures and influences in Conrad's own life. A knowledge of the period is not taken for granted, but explanations of the relevant events and ideas are woven into discussion of the stories and novels. Full use is made of letters, diaries, newspaper reports, magazine articles and the popular fiction of the day, in addition to detailed analysis of Conrad's fiction. This study puts Conrad into a new perspective, providing stimulating material for students, teachers and general readers.

Book excerpt: Books have been written, films made, we have raised the Titanic and watched her go down again on numerous occasions, but out of the wreckage Frances Wilson spins a new epic: when the ship hit the iceberg on 14 April 1912 and a thousand men prepared to die, J Bruce Ismay, the ship's owner and inheritor of the White Star fortune, jumped into a lifeboat with the women and children and rowed away to safety. Accused of cowardice, Ismay became, according to one headline, 'The Most Talked-of Man in the World'. The first victim of a press hate campaign, his reputation never recovered and while other survivors were piecing together their accounts, Ismay never spoke of his beloved ship again. With the help of that great narrator of the sea, Joseph Conrad, whose Lord Jim so uncannily predicted Ismay's fate - and whose manuscript of the story of a man who impulsively betrays a code of honour and lives on under the strain of intolerable guilt went down with the Titanic - Frances Wilson explores the reasons behind Ismay's jump, his desperate need to make sense of the horror of it all, and to find a way of living with lost honour. For those who survived the Titanic the world was never the same again. But as Wilson superbly demonstrates, we all have our own Titanics, and we all need to find ways of surviving them.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Napoleon Sarony was once one of the most famous names in American photography. During the Gilded Age, his grand portrait studio with its one-story-high marquee reproducing the photographer’s signature in golden letters was a New York City landmark visited by celebrities such as Oscar Wilde, Sarah Bernhardt, and Mark Twain. Sarony’s story represents a central chapter in the history of photography. Napoleon Sarony’s Living Pictures documents Sarony’s career as New York City’s premier portrait photographer and details a moment when the birth of celebrity culture and growth of mass media helped promote popular acceptance of photography as fine art. Sarony’s larger-than-life public image was crucial to demonstrating photography’s creative potential. At a time when photographers were commonly regarded as straitlaced entrepreneurs or technicians, Sarony circulated self-portraits in outlandish costumes to assert himself as a flamboyantly eccentric artist. These photographic performances forged an authoritative link between the so-called father of artistic photography in America and the stylish celebrity portraits that emerged from his studio by the tens of thousands. Reconstructing Sarony’s biography and bringing to light never-before-published portraits, Erin Pauwels provides an illuminating view of how one artist’s quest for creative recognition fueled the rise of celebrity culture and artistic photography in the United States. This book will appeal to historians of photography and nineteenth-century American visual culture, as well as anyone interested in this master of the medium of photography and his celebrity subjects.
