Book excerpt: Cultural creolization, métissage, hybridity, and the in-between spaces of postcolonial thought are now fundamental terms of reference within contemporary critical thought. Entwisted Tongues explores the sociohistorical and cultural basis for writing in creole languages from a comparative framework. The rise of self-defining literatures in Atlantic creoles offers parallels with the development of national literatures elsewhere, but the status of creole languages imposes particular conditions for literary creation. After an introduction to the history of the term creole, Entwisted Tongues surveys the history of the languages which are its focus: the Crioulo of Cape Verde, Sierra Leone Krio, Surinamese Sranan, Papiamentu (spoken in the Netherlands Antilles), and the varieties of French-based Kreyol in the Caribbean. The chapter Deep Speech turns around a trope ubiquitous in creoles, one conveying the sense that their authentic registers are at the furthest remove from the high cultures with which they are in contact; Diglossic Dilemma explores the contradictions inherent in this trope. The remaining analysis explores numerous nooks and crannies of these marginal but fascinating literatures, submitting that creoles and literature in them are prima facie evidence of the human will to articulate speech and verbal art, even in the face of slavery, oppression and penury.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Metaphors of Multilingualism explores changing attitudes towards multilingualism by focusing on shifts both in the choice and in the use of metaphors. Rainer Guldin uses linguistics, philosophy, literature, literary theory and related disciplines to trace the radical redefinition of multilingualism that has taken place over the last decades. This overall change constitutes a paradigmatic shift. However, despite the emergence of the new paradigm, the traditional monolingual point of view is still significantly influencing present-day attitudes towards multilingualism. Consequently, the emergent paradigm has to be studied in close connection with its predecessor. This book is the first extensive attempt to provide a critical overview of the key metaphors that organize current perceptions of multilingualism. Instead of an exhaustive list of possible metaphors of multilingualism, the emphasis is on three closely interrelated and overlapping clusters that play a central role in both paradigms: organic metaphors of the body, kinship and gender metaphors, as well as spatial metaphors. The examples are taken from different languages, among them French, German, Chinese, Japanese, Spanish and Brazilian Portuguese. This is ground-breaking reading for scholars and researchers in the fields of linguistics, literature, philosophy, media studies, anthropology, history and cultural studies.

Book excerpt: Using the themes found in Lee Strobel’s New York Times bestselling book The Case for Christ, this 90-day devotional for kids 9 to 12 combines historical and biblical evidence with fun facts, interesting trivia, and contemporary stories to explore what it means to be a Christian, and how we can be sure Jesus really existed, performed miracles, and rose from the dead to save the world from sin. And each short, two-page devotion helps kids “examine the case” when it comes to Jesus and apply those truths to their everyday lives. Based on the eye-opening bestselling Case for … series, this 90-day devotional for kids explores the life of Jesus and what it means to be a Christian, while also tackling the tough questions kids ask about God, the Bible, and why faith is important. Each day’s reading starts with an interesting and child-friendly story or fact to get kids’ minds wondering and engaged, and then applies that information to what the Bible, historical proof, and reliable research show us about Jesus and his ministry, as well as it means to follow Christ today. Each day, your child can “investigate” the case for Jesus for themselves and discover why the facts hold true. Case for Christ for Kids 90-Day Devotional: Can be used independently or as a daily devotional at mealtimes or bedtime Is filled with short devotions that are packed with information but can be read in under five minutes Is a perfect companion to The Case for Christ for Kids, which directly adapts Lee Strobel’s The Case for Christ book for a late elementary and middle school audience Demonstrates how kids can live out their faith every day, as well as helps them remain confident in their beliefs as they grow up

Book excerpt: This book discusses mathematical models for various applications in economics, with a focus on non-linear dynamics. Based on the author’s over 50 years of active work in the field, the book has been inspired by models from the period between 1920 and 1950. Following a brief introduction to economics for mathematicians and other modelers, it assembles a repository of useful specific functions for global dynamic modeling. Furthermore, twelve “research stubs” – outlined research agendas that have not yet been fully worked on – are suggested for further study and could even be expanded to entire research projects. The book is a valuable resource, particularly for young scientists who are skilled in mathematical and computational techniques and are looking for applications in economics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In In Blood and Ashes: Curse Tablets and Binding Spells in Ancient Greece, Jessica Lamont provides the first historical study of the development and dissemination of ritualized curse practice in the ancient Greek world, alongside that of binding spells, incantations, and other private rites. Documenting the cultural pressures that drove the practice of ancient Greek magic, this book reveals the ways in which individuals worked to negotiate with the world (here in the literal sense) "underground"-conjuring the powers of the Underworld, and calling upon the dead to assist the living. The study of such rituals expands our understanding of daily life in ancient communities, providing rare insights into how individuals were making sense of the world and coping with conflict, vulnerability, competition, anxiety, desire, and loss. Curse tablets in particular document persons who often slip through the cracks of traditional histories, enabling us to approach antiquity through a broader lens: here are the cooks, tavern keepers, garland weavers, helmsmen, craftspersons, and barbers. Bringing together epigraphic, historical, literary, archaeological, and material evidence, Lamont reads between the traditional narratives of Archaic, Classical, and early Hellenistic Greece, drawing out new voices, and presenting new histories to consider. These texts and objects offer glimpses into the public and private lives of individuals from c.500 BCE through Late Antiquity, illuminating the interplay of ritual and conflict-management strategies among citizens and slaves, men and women, pagans and Christians. Filled with new material and insights, Lamont's volume offers a fresh perspective on ancient Greek social history and religion from c.750-250 BCE, one that highlights the role played by ritual in negotiating life's uncertainties"--

Book excerpt: When his mother dies of influenza, a five-year-old boy is dropped off at the doorstep of Mr. Piggles, the proprietor of the York Soap Factory. Cared for by Penelope, Mr. Piggles' daughter, this green-eyed boy with red, curly hair is called Apples. Ten years old in 1812, Apples seeks to find his father; the only clue is a battered brass button. His search leads him to a chance encounter with Major-General Isaac Brock, Canada's legendary figure assigned to protect the Canadas. Apples reveres Brock and sees him as a fearless and assertive leader. Meanwhile in Washington, nineteen hotheaded senators determined to invade the Canadas believe the conquest will be a cakewalk, and the American army attacks. Brock acts decisively, and assassins are sent to eliminate him. Immersed in loyalty and defiance, Apples unravels the American's plot to kill Brock. His bravery saves the major-general's life. An engaging historical narrative of adventure and bravery, Apples and the Fallen Idols provides a view of the times, events, and heroes of the War of 1812 as seen through the eyes of a boy soldier.
