Book excerpt: “In the fall of 1970, at the New School in Greenwich Village, a new teacher posted a flyer on the wall,” begins Alexander Neubauer’s introduction to this remarkable book. “It read ‘Meet Poets and Poetry, with Pearl London and Guests.’” Few students responded. No one knew Pearl London, the daughter of M. Lincoln Schuster, cofounder of Simon & Schuster. But the seminar’s first guests turned out to be John Ashbery, Adrienne Rich, and Robert Creely. Soon W. S. Merwin followed, then Mark Strand and Galway Kinnell. London invited poets to bring their drafts to class, to discuss their work in progress and the details of vision and revision that brought a poem to its final version. From Maxine Kumin in 1973 to Eamon Grennan in 1996, including Amy Clampitt, Marilyn Hacker, Paul Muldoon, Nobel laureate Derek Walcott, and U.S. poet laureates Robert Hass, Robert Pinsky, Louise Glück, and Charles Simic, the book follows an extraordinary range of poets as they create their poems and offers numerous illustrations of the original drafts, which bring their processes to light. With James Merrill, London discusses autobiography and subterfuge; with Galway Kinnell, his influential notion that the new nature poem must include the city and not exclude man; with June Jordan, “Poem in Honor of South African Women” and the question of political poetry and its uses. Published here for the first time, the conversations are intimate, funny, irreverent, and deeply revealing. Many of the drafts under discussion—Robert Hass’s “Meditation at Lagunitas,” Edward Hirsch’s “Wild Gratitude,” Robert Pinsky’s “The Want Bone”—turned into seminal works in the poets’ careers. There has never been a gathering like Poetry in Person, which brings us a wealth of understanding and unparalleled access to poets and their drafts, unraveling how a great poem is actually made.

This book was released on 1992-12 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Index of themes in 12c French Arthurian verse romances from literary themes to everyday motifs. There has long been a need for an index of the themes in the French Arthurian verse romances. E.H. Ruck's analysis includes not only therecognised literary themes - the Unspelling Quest, the FaithlessWife -of the verse romances from Wace's Brut to Froissart'sMeliador, but also the other, less obvious, motifs of equalsignificance to the researcher, hawthorns, for example, and weaponry. Dr Ruck's index encompasses the Arthurian part of Wace's Brut; all of the works of Chrétien de Troyes; all four Tristan poems together with Marie de France's Chevrefoil and Lanval; the lais of Tyolet, Melion, Cor and Mantel; Renaut de Beaujeu's Le Bel Inconnu; La Mule sans frein and Le Chevalier à l'épée. As the index is intended first and foremost for the use of Arthurian scholars, the non-Arthurian parts of the Brut and the Laisof Marie de France have not been included, although reference is made to them in the notes. E.H. RUCK studied at the universities of Exeter, Lancaster, and Reading, where she worked for her PhD.

Book excerpt: This is simple story about a Federal Senator being kidnapped by a madman & how poetry found discarded in a gutter, a spiritual quest, and a lot of complicated people trying to be good whilst also being happy, accidentally foil his plot. Spend a day in the scrub that fringes the margins of steamy Darwin Harbor, in tropical northern Australia, and glimpse a world which is at once eerily tragic yet also irresistibly comic. In the end the madman fails in his plans: as for the rest? Join Proff, Croc, Senator Ryan, Ernie the Gimp, the Elephant Man, and a whole street-scape of no-hopers, as they become accidentally entangled in a madman's plans. Some learn something, many don't, one human being and a crocodile do come to an unfortunate end, and of course the press have a field day. To be good and happy: all at the same time? Is it possible? Some say yes, some say no; others sit back and watch clouds...

The poems display nostalgia, sadness, and comedy as originally written on his Greek typewriter he acquired in 1928 from his handwritten original manuscripts which were apparently discarded after being formally typewritten. Limited translation.

Her work uses the magnifying lense of poetry to dissect, examine and recompose the material of her own life and work, and in so doing, explores ideas and issues central to our understanding of language and meaning. The poems selected for translation in this compilation offer insights into her views across a spectrum of four categories: city life; love and family; ars poetica; and time and eternity. The Coroner’s Wife offers English readers the unique opportunity to experience a prolific and renowned Afrikaans poet in their own language. Translations have been sensively rendered by wellknown poets, Charl JF Cilliers, Johann de Lange, Jo Nel and Douglas Reid Skinner.
