The overarching geospatial analytical framework for this research also includes an examination of the manner in which existing policy enactments such as state gun laws vary by geography. Spaulding Flowers and Lane Pixley argue that the increased number of fatalities in school-based mass shooting is largely due to the increased lethality of the weapons, and they propose alternative solutions. Shootings have become part of the education landscape despite our belief that school-aged children have the right to a free and appropriate public education and there are additional protections for those rights. This quantitative descriptive analysis, studies multiple sets of data to determine if there are increased steps that schools and districts can implement to improve the overall school culture, thereby improving school safety. This study examines the individual school shooting incidents by using archived data to explore potential connections between school community affluence, access to school-based counselors and the effects of Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) has on a school shooter. The landmark ACE study revealed that the first eighteen years of a child’s life are instrumental in adolescent to adulthood development. A negative or or disruptive childhood experience may impair basic development thus causing an interruption in the person’s foundational maturity. The results and the conclusions of this study may prompt additional research and inform education and state policy regarding the need to provide school leaders and educators with more flexibility in delivering a more responsive mental health culture and climate for students.
