Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Lives and Legacy of Kim Sisŭp (1435–1493) offers an account of the most extraordinary figure of Korean literature and intellectual history. The present work narrates the fascinating story of a prodigious child, acclaimed poet, author of the first Korean novel, Buddhist monk, model subject, Confucian recluse and Daoist master. No other Chosŏn scholar or writer has been venerated in both Confucian shrines and Buddhist temples, had his works widely read in Tokugawa Japan and became an integral part of the North Korean literary canon. The nine studies and further materials presented in this volume provide a detailed look on the various aspects of Kim Sisŭp’s life and work as well as a reflection of both traditional and modern narratives surrounding his legacy. Contributors are: Vladimír Glomb, Gregory N. Evon, Dennis Wuerthner, Barbara Wall, Kim Daeyeol, Miriam Löwensteinová, Anastasia A. Guryeva, Sixiang Wang, and Diana Yüksel.
Book Synopsis Redemption and Regret by : James Scarth Gale
Download or read book Redemption and Regret written by James Scarth Gale and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2021-04-07 with total page 681 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Redemption and Regret presents two previously unpublished typescripts of James Scarth Gale, a Canadian missionary to Korea for four decades (1888–1927). During his time in Korea, Gale developed into the foremost Western scholar of Korean history, language, and literature, completing the first translation of Korean literature into a Western language, the first translation of English literature into Korean, and the first comprehensive Korean-English dictionary. In addition to these translations, the typescripts entitled Pen Pictures of Old Korea (ca. 1910) and Old Corea (ca. 1925), each presented here with introductory essays, contain Gale’s observations of various cultural artifacts, behaviours, and practices. Gale lived in Korea during a tumultuous and transformative period that witnessed the transition of the country from a "hermit" suzerain kingdom to an independent empire, and finally to a colonial possession of Japan. Pen Pictures of Old Korea and Old Corea preserve what Gale viewed as inevitably fated for extinction. This realization imbues his writings with a sense of ambivalence towards the "passing" of traditional Korea – owing to the conflict between his profound admiration for pre-modern Korean culture and his Western missionary identity, which demanded that the country adapt to a modern, Christian world.
Book Synopsis The Northern Region of Korea by : Sun Joo Kim
Download or read book The Northern Region of Korea written by Sun Joo Kim and published by University of Washington Press. This book was released on 2011-06-01 with total page 413 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The residents of the three northern provinces of Korea have long had cultural and linguistic characteristics that have marked them as distinct from their brethren in the central area near the capital and in the southern provinces. The making and legitimating of centralized Korean nation-states over the centuries, however, have marginalized the northern region and its distinct subjectivities. Contributors to this book address the problem of amnesia regarding this distinct subjectivity of the northern region of Korea in contemporary, historical, and cultural discourses, which have largely been dominated by grand paradigms, such as modernization theory, the positivist perspective, and Marxism. Through the use of storytelling, linguistic analysis, and journal entries from turn-of-the-century missionaries and traveling Russians in addition to many varieties of unconventional primary sources, the authors creatively explore unfamiliar terrain while examining the culture, identity, and regional distinctiveness of the northern region and its people. They investigate how the northern part of the Korean peninsula developed and changed historically from the early Choson to the colonial period and come to a consensus regarding the importance of regionalism as a vital factor in historical transformation, especially in regard to Korea's tumultuous modern era.
Book Synopsis Tales of the Strange by a Korean Confucian Monk by : Dennis Wuerthner
Download or read book Tales of the Strange by a Korean Confucian Monk written by Dennis Wuerthner and published by University of Hawaii Press. This book was released on 2020-04-30 with total page 403 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the most important and celebrated works of premodern Korean prose fiction, Kŭmo sinhwa (New Tales of the Golden Turtle) is a collection of five tales of the strange artfully written in literary Chinese by Kim Sisŭp (1435–1493). Kim was a major intellectual and poet of the early Chosŏn dynasty (1392–1897), and this book is widely recognized as marking the beginning of classical fiction in Korea. The present volume features an extensive study of Kim and the Kŭmo sinhwa, followed by a copiously annotated, complete English translation of the tales from the oldest extant edition. The translation captures the vivaciousness of the original, while the annotations reveal the work’s complexity, unraveling the deep and diverse intertextual connections between the Kŭmo sinhwa and preceding works of Chinese and Korean literature and philosophy. The Kŭmo sinhwa can thus be read and appreciated as a hybrid work that is both distinctly Korean and Sino-centric East Asian. A translator’s introduction discusses this hybridity in detail, as well as the unusual life and tumultuous times of Kim Sisŭp; the Kŭmo sinhwa’s creation and its translation and transformation in early modern Japan and twentieth-century (especially North) Korea and beyond; and its characteristics as a work of dissent. Tales of the Strange by a Korean Confucian Monk will be welcomed by Korean and East Asian studies scholars and students, yet the body of the work—stories of strange affairs, fantastic realms, seductive ghosts, and majestic but eerie beings from the netherworld—will be enjoyed by academics and non-specialist readers alike.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Embracing Illusion is an interdisciplinary study of a classic Korean novel. The capacity of fiction to speak on behalf of Buddhist truths is set in the larger context of how the literary imagination approaches the exploration of reality.
Book Synopsis Establishing a Pluralist Society in Medieval Korea, 918-1170 by : Remco Breuker
Download or read book Establishing a Pluralist Society in Medieval Korea, 918-1170 written by Remco Breuker and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2010-03-25 with total page 500 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers no less than a radically different view of the Koryŏ state. Until now scholarship failed to recognize the complicated historical descent, byzantine international relations and multiple incommensurable worldviews of the early Korean Koryŏ state (918-1170). Instead, it subjected these to reductionist categories favouring reified particulars over broader views. Asking how Koryŏ meaningfully dealt with its environment, Remco Breuker rejects the reduction of Koryŏ intellectual abundance to analytical categories, and emphasizes the functional importance of Koryŏ’s pluralism in allowing the notion that realities were scattered, inconsistent and plural. Here is a convincing argument that Koryŏ’s pluralism decisively contributed to the formation of a region-transcending communal identity that enabled Koryŏ to engage in a civilizational competition with neighbouring Chinese and Manchurian states, while maintaining a dynamic but stable society domestically.

Book Synopsis A Storied Sage by : Micah L. Auerback
Download or read book A Storied Sage written by Micah L. Auerback and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2016-12-07 with total page 371 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Auerback has produced an entirely original history of Japanese Buddhism . . . a major contribution to the field. This book is exemplary.” —D. Max Moerman, author of The Japanese Buddhist World Map Since its arrival in Japan in the sixth century, Buddhism has played a central role in Japanese culture. But the historical figure of the Buddha, the prince of ancient Indian descent who abandoned his wealth and power to become an awakened being, has repeatedly disappeared and reappeared, emerging each time in a different form and to different ends. A Storied Sage traces this transformation of concepts of the Buddha, from Japan’s ancient period in the eighth century to the end of the Meiji period in the early twentieth century. Micah L. Auerback follows the changing fortune of the Buddha through the novel uses for the Buddha’s story in high and low culture alike, often outside of the confines of the Buddhist establishment. Auerback argues for the Buddha’s continuing relevance during Japan’s early modern period and links the later Buddhist tradition in Japan to its roots on the Asian continent. Additionally, he examines the afterlife of the Buddha in hagiographic literature, demonstrating that the late Japanese Buddha, far from fading into a ghost of his former self, instead underwent an important reincarnation. Challenging many established assumptions about Buddhism and its evolution in Japan, A Storied Sage is a vital contribution to the larger discussion of religion and secularization in modernity. “The point where this study blossoms with voluminous detail is when developments in historiography made biographies of the Buddha controversial in the early modern era . . . Auerback’s coverage of these debates is exceedingly thorough.” —Journal of Japanese Studies

Download or read book Korea written by James Hoare and published by Oxford, England : Clio Press. This book was released on 1997 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The two Korean states are heirs to a great artistic and cultural tradition. Moreover, they share a long, sometimes bitter historical experience, culminating in forty years of Japanese colonial rule. Although liberated in 1945, Korea was divided. Two states emerged, a communist North and an autocratic South. In 1950, the North failed in an attempt at reunification by force and the resultant Korean War intensified the hostility which continues to this day. Since the end of the war, South Korea has become one of the world's economic success stories. North Korea has been less successful, but attracts interest for its unique development as a Marxist state.
