Book Synopsis Arctic Offshore Engineering by : Andrew Clennel Palmer
Download or read book Arctic Offshore Engineering written by Andrew Clennel Palmer and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2013 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is an increasing need to construct engineering structures in the Arctic sea. The requirement is principally generated by the oil and gas industry, because of the substantial reserves that are known to existing offshore in the Beaufort Sea, the Caspian Sea, the Barents Sea, the Pacific Ocean off the cost of Sakhalin, the Canadian Arctic, and almost certainly elsewhere. Structures have to withstand the severe environmental forces generated by sea ice, a subject that is developing rapidly but is still far from completely understood. Underwater pipelines have to be safe against ice gouging and strudel scour, but also have to be constructed safely and economically. The social and human environment has to be understood and respected. This important book intentionally takes a broad view, and vividly accounts for the many and often subtle interactions between the different factors. It is illustrated by case studies of actual projects.
Download or read book Against the Tide written by Cornelia Dean and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 1999 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Few aspects of American military history have been as vigorously debated as Harry Truman's decision to use atomic bombs against Japan. In this carefully crafted volume, Michael Kort describes the wartime circumstances and thinking that form the context for the decision to use these weapons, surveys the major debates related to that decision, and provides a comprehensive collection of key primary source documents that illuminate the behavior of the United States and Japan during the closing days of World War II. Kort opens with a summary of the debate over Hiroshima as it has evolved since 1945. He then provides a historical overview of thye events in question, beginning with the decision and program to build the atomic bomb. Detailing the sequence of events leading to Japan's surrender, he revisits the decisive battles of the Pacific War and the motivations of American and Japanese leaders. Finally, Kort examines ten key issues in the discussion of Hiroshima and guides readers to relevant primary source documents, scholarly books, and articles.

Book Synopsis Offshore Structure Modeling by : Subrata Kumar Chakrabarti
Download or read book Offshore Structure Modeling written by Subrata Kumar Chakrabarti and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1994-02-21 with total page 494 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While the existing literature on offshore structures touch on model testing, a comprehensive text discussing the design, construction, instrumentation, testing and analysis of the physical model is lacking. This book fills that vacuum and provides, through its survey of the theoretical and practical aspects of physical modeling, an in-depth coverage of the technology of model testing. Its usefulness runs through the entire field of engineering, reaching far beyond its focus on offshore construction; and its breadth of scope should appeal not only to engineers and naval architects but to scientists interested in structural or hydraulic testing as well.

Book Synopsis Liberal Education in Twenty-first Century Engineering by : David F. Ollis
Download or read book Liberal Education in Twenty-first Century Engineering written by David F. Ollis and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2004 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Twenty-first century engineering education must meet radically revised national accreditation standards, known colloquially as EC2000. This book shows paths forward for all faculty involved in the «liberal education» of engineering undergraduates. Beginning with an exhortation for liberal education, it includes the EC2000 criteria and its historical origin, as well as example institutional and individual responses to these criteria - which include topics in communication, ethics and professional responsibility, contemporary issues, art and aesthetics, and the integration of engineering and the humanities. The variety of curricular responses presented indicate that this is a formative - perhaps even revolutionary - period in engineering education.

Book Synopsis Coastal Engineering by : Dominic Reeve
Download or read book Coastal Engineering written by Dominic Reeve and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2018-03-09 with total page 542 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Effective coastal engineering is expensive, but it is not as costly as neglect or ineffective intervention. Good practice needs to be based on sound principles, but theoretical work and modelling also need to be well grounded in practice, which is continuously evolving. Conceptual and detailed design has been advanced by new industry publications since the publication of the second edition. This third edition provides a number of updates: the sections on wave overtopping have been updated to reflect changes brought in with the recently issued EurOtop II manual; a detailed worked example is given of the calculation of extreme wave conditions for design; additional examples have been included on the reliability of structures and probabilistic design; the method for tidal analysis and calculation of amplitudes and phases of harmonic constituents from water level time series has been introduced in a new appendix together with a worked example of harmonic analysis; and a real-life example is included of a design adapting to climate change. This book is especially useful as an information source for undergraduates and engineering MSc students specializing in coastal engineering and management. Readers require a good grounding in basic fluid mechanics or engineering hydraulics, and some familiarity with elementary statistical concepts.
