Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For the sizeable Jewish community living in Greece during the 1940s, German occupation of Greece posed a distinct threat. The Nazis and their collaborators murdered around ninety percent of the Jewish population through the course of the war. This new account presents cutting edge research on four elements of the Holocaust in Greece: the level of antisemitism and question of collaboration; the fate of Jewish property before, during, and after their deportation; how the few surviving Jews were treated following their return to Greece, especially in terms of justice and restitution; and the ways in which Jewish communities rebuilt themselves both in Greece and abroad. Taken together, these elements point to who was to blame for the disaster that befell Jewish communities in Greece, and show that the occupation authorities alone could not have carried out these actions to such magnitude without the active participation of Greek Christians.

The entries in Part One treat general aspects of the origins, development, organization, and administration of the welfare state in Canada; included is a section covering basic statistical sources. The entries in Part Two treat particular areas of policy such as unemployment, disabled persons, prisons, child and family welfare, health care, and day care. Also included are an introductory essay reviewing the literature on social welfare policy in Canada, a "User's Guide," several appendices on archival materials, and an extensive chronology of Canadian social welfare legislation both federal and provincial. The volume will increase the accessibility of literature on the welfare state and stimulate increased awareness and further research. It should be of wide interest to students, researchers, librarians, social welfare policy analysts and administrators, and social work practitioners.

Book excerpt: This new edition explores the myriad ways that education, broadly defined, molds each of us in profound and enduring ways. Laid against the supporting scaffolding of modern critical theory, the chapters offer cutting edge perspectives of going to school in British Columbia. How has education been tailored by race, class, gender? How do representations of schools and schooling change over time and whose interests are served? What echoes of current tensions can we hear in the past? The book offers a glimpse of the deep contradictions inherent in an experience that we all share.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "For more than fifty years, victims of tuberculosis in British columbia received treatment at the Tranquille Sanatorium. Once regarded as among the finest institutions of its kind in North America, the facility closed when drug therapies made the sanatorium's combination of rest, sunshine and fresh air seem out of fashion. Today, as the abandoned bnuilding quickly fall into disrepair, their demolition seems imminent. Already, the history they represent is largely forgotten. The book presented here reveals the struggles of the British Columbia Anti-Tuberculosis Society to establish and operate British Columbia's first sanatorium. Financial problems and a difficult relationship with the community of Kamloops made the task more challenging. Against the background of politics and changing medical theory, under both private and public ownership, the institution treated thousands of patients before its closure in 1958. This is the story of a medical institution and the people who brought it to life--a story containing surprising drama and many lessons for those working and volunteering in the field of health care today."--Back cover.

Book excerpt: Physical optics is a branch of optics that studies optical phenomena, such as polarization, interference, diffraction, dispersion, scattering, etc. All these phenomena cannot be explained by using the approximations of geometric optics. In physical optics, the wave property of light is considered. Light waves are electromagnetic waves. The interaction of light with materials involves the modeling of both electric and magnetic fields of the light wave. When the propagation of light in systems cannot be solved analytically, numerical modeling techniques are used. These include the boundary element method, finite element method and the transmission-line matrix method. This book is a valuable compilation of topics, ranging from the basic to the most complex theories and principles in the field of physical optics. It aims to shed light on some of the unexplored aspects of this field. It aims to serve as a resource guide for students and experts alike and contribute to the growth of the discipline.
