Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This title was first published 2003. In the twentieth century, Britain was rich in artistic achievement, especially in sculpture. Just some of those working in this field were Jacob Epstein, Henri Gaudier-Brzeska, Henry Moore, Barbara Hepworth, Anthony Caro, Richard Long, Mona Hatoum and Anish Kapoor. The work of these and other known and less well-known artists has an astonishing variety and expressive power, a range and strength that has placed Britain at the hub of the artistic world. Alan Windsor has compiled a concise biographical dictionary of sculpture in Britain in book form. Richly informative and easy-to-use, this guide is an art-lover's and expert's essential reference. Written by scholars, the entries are cross-referenced and each concise biographical outline provides the relevant facts about the artist's life, a brief characterization of the artist's work, and, where appropriate, major bibliographical references.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Art of jewellery-making has taken many forms, and today the most adventurous and innovative is one in which the values of art and the individual are set above the concerns of fashion, commerce and industry. Emerging as an international movement in the early 1970s, contemporary jewellery is now a well-established category in the art world." "This reappraisal of the nature and role of jewellery is, with gathering momentum, regenerating the ancient art, so that the meaning and purpose of jewellery is being redefined for the present-day world. Contemporary jewellery, as described by these criteria, has become one of the most intensive and absorbing sectors in the international arts." "The Best in Contemporary Jewellery is a snapshot survey of recent work by 64 outstanding artists, craftsmen and designers from 14 countries. Three sections - Idea, Object and Image - offer a unique perspective on their individual attitudes and achievements. Idea is a short portfolio of sketch designs and inspirations from some of the contributors, while Object, the main core of the book, is a gallery show of several works from each artist. The last section, Image, shows a selection of objects against the body." "Beautifully illustrated throughout, The Best in Contemporary Jewellery is a celebration of some of the most outstanding craftsmanship and imagination displayed in recent jewellery-making."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Book Synopsis Art Nouveau Jewellery by : Fritz Falk
Download or read book Art Nouveau Jewellery written by Fritz Falk and published by Arnoldsche Verlagsanstalt GmbH. This book was released on 2008 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Around 1900 the Pforzheim jewellery-making industry, which had been established since 1767, underwent an upturn to flourish as never before. The participation of Pforzheim businesses in the 1900 Paris World Exhibition and the thorough assimilation of a variety of influences from abroad - including the figurative French Art Nouveau style - ensured that Pforzheim Art Nouveau jewellery developed confidently towards aesthetic autonomy. Collaboration between the jewellery industry and professors at the Pforzheim School for the Applied Arts as well as sharp eyes for new developments outside the jewellery capital shaped Pforzheim jewellery creations around 1900. Other fecund sources of collaboration were the Darmstadt Mathildenhöhe artists and Wiener Werkstätte. The author has discovered hitherto unpublished contemporary source material and has been able to draw on hundreds of extant original pieces of jewellery - brooches, pendants, collars, hatpins and hair combs that are now in museums, private collections and on the art market - to make a choice selection for this book. Thus a living picture emerges of the diverse formal and technical possibilities that gave rise to the design, craftsmanship and industrial manufacture characteristic of Pforzheim Art Nouveau jewellery. Text in English and German.
