Book Synopsis Idiom Treatment Experiments in Machine Translation by : Dimitra Anastasiou
Download or read book Idiom Treatment Experiments in Machine Translation written by Dimitra Anastasiou and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2010-09-13 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1975, Searle stated that one should speak idiomatically unless there is some good reason not to do so. Fillmore, Kay, and O’Connor in 1988 defined an idiomatic expression or construction as something that a language user could fail to know while knowing everything else in the language. Our language is rich in conversational phrases, idioms, metaphors, and general expressions used in metaphorical meaning. These idiomatic expressions pose a particular challenge for Machine Translation (MT), because their translation for the most part does not work literally, but logically. The present book shows how idiomatic expressions can be recognized and correctly translated with the help of a bilingual idiom dictionary (English-German), a monolingual (German) corpus, and morphosyntactic rules. The work focuses on the field of Example-based Machine Translation (EBMT). A theory of idiomatic expressions with their syntactic and semantic properties is provided, followed by the practical part of the book which describes how the hybrid EBMT system METIS-II is able to correctly process idiomatic expressions. A comparison of METIS-II with three commercial systems shows that idioms are not impossible to translate as it was predicted in 1952: “The only way for a machine to treat idioms is—not to have idioms!” This book furnishes plenty of examples of idiomatic phrases and provides the foundation for how MT systems can process and translate idioms by means of simple linguistic resources.

Download or read book 100 Jahre deutsch-äthiopische diplomatische Beziehungen written by Heinrich Scholler and published by LIT Verlag Münster. This book was released on 2007 with total page 50 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Under the reign of Menelik II. a German diplomatic mission under professor Friedrich Rosen was sent to Ethiopia and concluded a treaty of commerce and friendship. The emperor wanted to be more protected against the European colonial powers. Worldwar I & II interrupted the friendly and economic relations between the two countries. However already in 1954 emperor Haile Selassie I. paid an official visit to Germany. Starting with the 80'es Germany by and by got rid of the traditional Hallstein-Doktrin and tried to include Ethiopia, where the African Union had its headquarters, into the new political African policy. Political problems, which had developed under the Rule of Mengistu, were overcome after 1991.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Korean War is often regarded as the "forgotten war," however, considering its historical significance it should be anything but. It was the first pitched battle between the communist forces and a coalition of the United Nations. While it was not the last such war in Asia, it did stem the tide in East Asia and permitted South Korea to prosper while North Korea decayed. This guide is prepared with the student and interested lay reader in mind. Its purpose is to provide an overview of the Korean War through: - a timeline of events - an introduction that explains the place, its history, and the phases, costs, and consequences of the war - dictionary entries that summarize the significance of the persons, places, organizations, military operations, battles, weaponry, and other elements of the war - a bibliography of accessible resources for further research
Book Synopsis Two Dreams in One Bed by : Hyun Ok Park
Download or read book Two Dreams in One Bed written by Hyun Ok Park and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 2005-11-04 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rethinking a key epoch in East Asian history, Hyun Ok Park formulates a new understanding of early-twentieth-century Manchuria. Most studies of the history of modern Manchuria examine the turbulent relations of the Chinese state and imperialist Japan in political, military, and economic terms. Park presents a compelling analysis of the constitutive effects of capitalist expansion on the social practices of Korean migrants in the region. Drawing on a rich archive of Korean, Japanese, and Chinese sources, Park describes how Koreans negotiated the contradictory demands of national and colonial powers. She demonstrates that the dynamics of global capitalism led the Chinese and Japanese to pursue capitalist expansion while competing for sovereignty. Decentering the nation-state as the primary analytic rubric, her emphasis on the role of global capitalism is a major innovation for understanding nationalism, colonialism, and their immanent links in social space. Through a regional and temporal comparison of Manchuria from the late nineteenth century until 1945, Park details how national and colonial powers enacted their claims to sovereignty through the regulation of access to land, work, and loans. She shows that among Korean migrants, the complex connections among Chinese laws, Japanese colonial policies, and Korean social practices gave rise to a form of nationalism in tension with global revolution—a nationalism that laid the foundation for what came to be regarded as North Korea’s isolationist politics.
Book Synopsis The (im)possibilities of Machine Translation by : Anja Schwarzl
Download or read book The (im)possibilities of Machine Translation written by Anja Schwarzl and published by Peter Lang Publishing. This book was released on 2001 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the main topics of the book is the comparison between the human and machine translation process, including information on translation theories and models of translation. These are illustrated by so-called Think-Aloud Protocols. The longest part of the book is devoted to the evaluation of machine translation, as well as the comparison of the programs themselves. Using different text types (grammar test, business English, user's manual, children's story, scientific text), various evaluation methods (four-scale rating, benchmark test, test suite, error counting, backtranslation) are compared. The final chapter looks at the future perspectives of machine translation with the possible inclusion of expert systems, artificial intelligence, fuzzy logic, neural networks and chaostheory.
