I do not blame the English people for this apathy, for, during the past twenty years they have been kept in the dark as to the true position of their fellow-christians in Turkey. In the early part of 1860, Prince Gortschakofl', the Russian Minister for Foreign Affairs, addressed a circular to the Great Powers of Europe, pointing out the continuance of that injustice, of which the Christians in Turkey had so long com plained, and which the Porte had, at various periods, for upwards of thirty years, promised should be removed. Upon the receipt of this circular, the English Government instructed Sir Henry Bulwer, Ambassador at Constantinople, to draw up a list of questions to be sent to our Consuls throughout Turkey. No persons could, from their position, better speak on such a subject. From their answers, honestly, faithfully, and intelligently given, we might have had a luminous survey of the Turkish Empire. Before sending in their answers, however, they were reminded that their very bread depended on the will of His Excellency, for Sir Henry Bulwer wrote to the Consuls as follows: Her Majestv's Government wishes, as you well know, to maintain the Ottoman Empire. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Turks and Christians: A Solution of the Eastern Question The object which I have in view in publishing this volume is to give the reader a fair insight into the present condition of the Turks and the Christians, and, by that means, to awaken the sympathies of the English public on behalf of the oppressed Rayahs of Turkey. It is undoubted that, at the present moment, those sympathies are withheld, and while in Russia, Germany, Austria, and Italy, the public mind has been horrified at the atrocities committed in the Herzegovina, and deeply moved by the sufferings of the unfortunate refugees, who are outcasts from their homes and have sought a refuge in Croatia, Dalmatia, and Montenegro, England, that was the first to break the manacles of the slave, looks calmly on, and manifests little or no concern in the misfortunes of the Christian. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Rage of Islam: An Account of the Massacre of Christians by the Turks in Persia A Thrilling story is this, written by my longtime friend and Christian brother, Rev. Yonan H. Shahbaz, and entitled The Rage of Islam. Of this notable narrative the author and his estimable wife were no small part. One cannot know Mr. Shahbaz as I have known him, during many years, without admiring him and loving him as a manly man and a sincere Christian. The author of this book has been wise in giving us a reasonably full description of Persia. To most readers this country is largely a terra incognita. This land of Southwestern Asia is called by its inhabitants Iran. This is the native name of Persia. The word is derived from the legendary history of the Persian race. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Murderous Tyranny of the Turks No one who has studied the history of the Near East for the last five centuries will be surprised that the Allied Powers have declared their purpose to put an end to the rule of the Turk in Europe, and still less will he dissent from their determination to deliver the Christian pcpu lation of what is called the Turkish Empire, whether in Asia or in Europe, from a Government which during those five centuries has done nothing but oppress them. These changes are indeed long overdue. They ought to have come more than a century ago, because it had then already become manifest that the Turk was hopelessly unfit to govern, with any approach to justice, subject races of a different religion. The Turk has never been of any use for any purpose except fighting. He cannot administer, though in his earlier days he had the sense to employ intelligent Christian administrators. He cannot secure justice. As a governing power, he has always shown himself incapable, corrupt and cruel. He has always destroyed he has never created. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Historical Sketches: Volume One is the work of John Henry Cardinal Newman, a collection of essays on historical topics written by Newman himself, a well known religious figure and a man who was beatified in 2010. This publication of Volume One includes sections on The Turks and their relations with Europe, Marcus Tullius Cicero, Apollonius of Tyana, and primitive Christianity. Cardinal Newman's book of historical essays is formatted in a relatively straightforward style. Each section of the book features a brief introduction, followed by a series of essays on the selected topic. The most space in this collection is devoted to the author's works on the history of the Turks and their relationships with other European nations. This section is subdivided into four chapters, focusing on the nation of Turkey, the descent of the Turks, the military conquests of the Turks, and the future prospects of the Turks. While the other topics in this collection are all given a thorough treatment, this section is the standout in Volume One. John Henry Newman has put together an interesting book of history that successfully provides the reader with essays on a cross section of different topics. While it is a unique choice to group these works into one collection when they are ostensibly unrelated, the resulting book is nothing if not an entertaining read. This is not an exhaustive history of any of the subjects discussed, but rather an analysis of various influential historical figures and peoples. Historical Sketches: Volume One will appeal to anybody that considers themselves a fan of history writing. While better known as a religious figure, John Henry Cardinal Newman was also an accomplished author, and one whose work deserves to be read. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Orthodox Eastern Church This little book is intended to supply not so much matter for controversy as a certain amount of information about the Orthodox Church. People in the West have too long forgotten that enormous mass of their fellow Christians who live on the other side of the Adriatic Sea and the river Vistula, and now that Anglicans especially have begun to take an interest in what they look upon as another branch of the Church, it seems regrettable that English Catholics as a rule have only the vaguest and the most inaccurate ideas about the people whom they confuse under the absurd name of "Greeks." During the late war one saw how widespread were such ideas as that the Russian clergy were under the Patriarch of Constantinople and said Mass in Greek. It is chiefly with the hope of rectifying such mistakes that the book has been written. There is nothing in it that has not been said often and better before, and the only excuse for its publication is that there does not seem to be yet anything of the kind from the Catholic point of view in English. As it is written for Catholics I have generally supposed that point of view and have not filled up the pages by repeating once more arguments for the Primacy, Infallibility of the Pope and so on, such as can be easily found already in the publications of the Catholic Truth Society. The complete titles of the works quoted will be found in the List of Books. M.P.L. and M.P.G. stand for Migne: Patrologia latina and gr ca respectively. Two points need a word of explanation. The first is the spelling of Greek names. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from With the Turk in Wartime IN February of the year 1913 I made up my mind to go to Turkey for a few months in order to escape an atmosphere which sickened me. The English Press and public had, in this twentieth century, responded with fanaticism to the cry of a Crusade against the Turk raised by some cunning Balkan rulers; and that fanaticism had been fostered, as it seemed to my intelligence, by British statesmen - not for their country's ends, but for the ends and in the interests of Russia, our great Eastern rival. The solidarity of Christendom against a Muslim power was reckoned a fine thing by many people; but it broke the heart of Englishmen who loved the East. For what had England stood for until then, in India and throughout her Eastern empire? Had she not stood for universal toleration, for a nation ality which should be independent of religious differences? The Turks of their own will.
