Book Synopsis Effects of Tidal Bores on Turbulent Mixing by : Bruno Simon

Book excerpt: Tidal bores are surge waves propagating upstream rivers as the tide rushes into estuaries. They induce large turbulences and mixing of the river and estuary flow of which effects remain scarcely studied. Herein, tidal bores are investigated experimentally and numerically with an idealised model of positive surges propagating upstream an initially steady flow. The experimental work estimated flow changes and typical turbulent length scale evolution induced by undular bores with and without breaking roller. The bore passage was associated with large free surface and flow velocity fluctuations, together with some variations of the integral turbulent scales. Coherent turbulent structures appeared in the wake of leading wave near the bed and moved upward into the water column during the bore propagation. The numerical simulations were based on previous experimental work on undular bores. Some test cases were realised to verify the accuracy of the numerical methods. The results gave access to the detailed flow evolution during the bore propagation. Large velocity reversals were observed close to the no-slip boundaries. In some configurations, coherent turbulent structures appeared against the walls in the wake of the bore front.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A tidal bore is a series of waves propagating upstream as the tidal flow turns to rising. It forms during spring tide conditions when the tidal range exceeds 4 to 6 m and the flood tide is confined to a narrow funnelled estuary. Its existence is based upon a fragile hydrodynamic balance between the tidal amplitude, the freshwater river flow conditions and the river channel bathymetry, and it is shown that this balance may be easily disturbed by changes in boundary conditions and freshwater inflow. This book demystifies the physics of a tidal bore and it thoroughly documents the tidal bores on our planet with reliable and accurate information. It aims to cultivate a passion for a beautiful, but fragile geophysical process, with in-depth updated content and by over 190 illustrations and photographs.
Book Synopsis Turbulence Measurements in a Tidal Current by : Alan T. Massey
Download or read book Turbulence Measurements in a Tidal Current written by Alan T. Massey and published by . This book was released on 1968 with total page 126 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Measurements were made of the component of turbulent velocity along the axis of a 3-knot tidal current 1.5 meters below the water surface using a ducted impeller current meter. Values of the one-dimensional energy spectra were computed on a digital computer at wave numbers from 0/cm to 0.157/cm. The composite energy spectrum obtained from the individual spectra was of the -5/3 power law form predicted by the Kolmogoroff hypothesis for wave numbers from 0.01/cm to 0.026/cm. At higher wave numbers the energy spectrum decreased more rapidly than predicted because of attenuation of the turbulent velocity variations caused by the relatively large size of the current meter. The average variance for the field of turbulence was 55.6 sq cm - sq sec plus or minus 25.0 (standard error), and the average rate of energy dissipation by viscosity was estimated using the Kolmogoroff hypothesis as 0.84 sq cm - cu sec. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The continental shelf seas have an importance which is out of proportion to the rela tively small fraction of the area of the global ocean which they occupy. These shallow seas play an important role as the high energy boundary zones of the deep ocean where much of the ocean's tidal and wave energies are dissipated. They are highly productive biologically and are responsible for most of the world's fishery production. In many cases, they are also sources of economically important resources, notably hydrocarbons and they are frequently important as thorough fares for merchant shipping. Because they are the regions of the ocean closest to our centres of population and industrial activity, they have been the first to feel the impact of the increasing pressures imposed by large scale waste disposal into the ocean. The North Sea is an archetypal representative of such seas: we need to be able to understand its processes and predict them if we are to achieve a degree of rational management in the future, as the environmental threats increase. The understanding required extends through a wide range of processes that operate in the shelf seas from the fundamental physics to the chemistry and biology of the water column and the seabed sediments. These processes, and the interactions between them, cut across the traditional discipline boundaries within marine science and require a substantial inter disciplinary effort for their effective study.

Book Synopsis Waves, Tides and Shallow-Water Processes by : Open Open University
Download or read book Waves, Tides and Shallow-Water Processes written by Open Open University and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The text begins by describing waves, their measurement and characteristics, their behaviour in shallow water, and unusual waves. Next, mainly theoretical aspects are considered of sediment movement and deposition by currents, before discussing wave action in the littoral zone, tidal current action on tidal flat and in estuaries, and the interaction of waves, tides, and river flow in deltas. Finally, we examine shelf-sea processes, including an outline of their mineral resources.

Book Synopsis Applied Hydrodynamics by : Hubert Chanson
Download or read book Applied Hydrodynamics written by Hubert Chanson and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2013-08-30 with total page 450 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This textbook treats Hydro- and Fluid Dynamics, the engineering science dealing with forces and energies generated by fluids in motion, playing a vital role in everyday life. Practical examples include the flow motion in the kitchen sink, the exhaust fan above the stove, and the air conditioning system in our home. When driving a car, the air flow around the vehicle body induces some drag which increases with the square of the car speed and contributes to excess fuel consumption. Engineering applications encompass fluid transport in pipes and canals, energy generation, environmental processes and transportation (cars, ships, aircrafts). This book deals with the topic of applied hydrodynamics. The lecture material is grouped into two complementary sections: ideal fluid flow and real fluid flow. The former deals with two- and possibly three-dimensional fluid motions that are not subject to boundary friction effects, while the latter considers the flow regions affected by boundary friction and turbulent shear. The lecture material is designed as an intermediate course in fluid dynamics for senior undergraduate and postgraduate students in Civil, Environmental, Hydraulic and Mechanical Engineering. It is supported by notes, applications, remarks and discussions in each chapter. Moreover a series of appendices is added, while some major homework assignments are developed at the end of the book, before the bibliographic references.
