Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A debut short story collection in the tradition of writers like Kelly Link, Aimee Bender, and George Saunders—strange, imaginative, and refreshingly original—now back in print as part of Ecco’s “Art of the Story” Series, and with a new introduction from the author Kevin Wilson’s characters inhabit a world that moves seamlessly between the real and the imagined, the mundane and the fantastic. “Grand Stand-In” is narrated by an employee of the Nuclear Family Supplemental Provider—a company that supplies “stand-ins” for families with deceased, ill, or just plain mean grandparents. And in “Blowing Up On the Spot,” a story singled out by Ann Patchett for Ploughshares, a young woman works sorting tiles at a Scrabble factory after her parents have spontaneously combusted. Southern gothic at its best, laced with humor and pathos, these wonderfully inventive stories explore the relationship between loss and death and the many ways we try to cope with both.

Book excerpt: An experimental investigation was conducted to study the effects of Reynolds number variation on isolated nozzle afterbody performance. A strut-mounted cone-cylinder model with three separate afterbody configurations for Aerospace Research and Development (AGARD) was used for this investigation. This program was conducted in two phases distinguished by the model size and the wind tunnels used to obtain the experimental results. The effect of tunnel wall porosity on nozzle afterbody (NAB) performance was investigated.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tunnelling provides a robust solution to a variety of engineering challenges. It is a complex process, which requires a firm understanding of the ground conditions as well as the importance of ground-structure interaction. This book covers the full range of areas related to tunnel construction required to embark upon a career in tunnelling. It also includes a number of case studies related to real tunnel projects, to demonstrate how the theory applies in practice. New features of this second edition include: the introduction of a case study related to Crossrail’s project in London, focussing on the Whitechapel and Liverpool Street station tunnels and including considerations of building tunnels in a congested urban area; and further information on recent developments in tunnel boring machines, including further examples of all the different types of machine as well as multi-mode machines. The coverage includes: Both hard-rock and soft-ground conditions Site investigation, parameter selection, and design considerations Methods of improving the stability of the ground and lining techniques Descriptions of the various main tunnelling techniques Health and safety considerations Monitoring of tunnels during construction Description of the latest tunnel boring machines Case studies with real examples, including Crossrail’s project in London Clear, concise, and heavily illustrated, this is a vital text for final-year undergraduate and MSc students and an invaluable starting point for young professionals and novices in tunnelling.

Book excerpt: Tunneling in Rock reviews the theory and practice of engineering geology and its application to tunneling in rocks. This book explores the history of tunneling, defines terminologies of tunneling, and illustrates tunnels. The book discusses the petrography of unaltered rocks, such as rock minerals, fragmental rocks, igneous rocks, sedimentary rocks and metamorphic rocks. The book then describes rock alteration, which may be caused by weathering. Such alterations are low-temperature alterations at moderate depths, hydrothermal alteration, deuteric alteration, pneumatolytic alteration, and other miscellaneous types of alteration. The book also discusses elementary rock mechanics, such as isotropism and anisotropism; mechanical properties of rocks; force and stress; and the fracture and fold anisotropy in rocks, including the deformation of minerals, elastic, quasi-elastic, and plastic rocks. The remaining chapters of the book focus on hydrogeology; geological investigation of proposed tunnel locations and its application to tunnel planning and design; different tunneling methods; and geological investigations during tunnel constructions. Those who are interested in geological aspects of planning and constructing tunnels will find this book valuable.

Book excerpt: Immersed tunnels have been around for more than a century but remain a relatively unknown form of tunnel construction. For waterway crossings they are an effective alternative to bored tunnels and bridges, particularly in shallower waters, soft alluvial soils, and earthquake-prone areas. Successful implementation requires a thorough understanding o

Book excerpt: The shakedown and calibrated characteristics of the new AEDC Mach Number 4 Aerothermal Wind Tunnel were experimentally identified at several test conditions. The nominal Mach number of the test core as defined by a 30-probe pitot pressure rake varied between nominally 3.95 and 4.0, depending on the test section Reynolds number and stilling chamber temperature. The overall variation in the stilling chamber pressure is nominally 15 to 180 psia, with temperatures from 250 to 1,210 F for an overall Reynolds number range of 0.2 to 8.1 million per foot and true temperature-pressure altitude simulation from 56,000 to 105,000 ft. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A number of studies relating to the use of Freon-12 as a substitute medium for air in aerodynamic testing have been made. The use of Freon-12 instead of air makes possible large savings in wind-tunnel drive power. Because of the fact that the ratio of specific heats is approximately 1.13 for Freon-12 as compared with 1.4 for air, some differences exist between data obtained in Freon-12 and air. Methods for predicting aerodynamic characteristics of bodies in air from data obtained in Freon-12, however, have been developed from the concept of similarity of the streamline pattern. These methods, derived from consideration of two-dimensional flows, provide substantial agreement in all cases for which comparative data are available. These data consist of measurements throughout a range of Mach number from approximately 0.4 to 1.2 of pressure distributions and hinge moments on swept and unswept wings having aspect ratios ranging from 4.0 to 9.0, including cases where a substantial part of the wing was stalled.

Book excerpt: In Volume 30, an attempt is made to consider comprehensively both theoretical and experimental data that have been obtained to date on electron tunneling reactions involving chemical compounds of various classes, and to discuss the role played by these reactions in different areas of chemistry. The discussion of the above problem is preceded by a review of data on tunneling phenomena in nuclear physics, atomic physics, solid-state physics, as well as on the tunneling effects in chemistry that go beyond the framework of the main subject of this monograph. This review is included to acquaint the reader with the role of tunneling phenomena in physics and chemistry as a whole, to show how diversified the kingdom of tunneling phenomena is, and to see more distinctly the similarities and the differences between electron tunneling in chemical reactions and other tunnel phenomena.
