Book Synopsis A study of Tunisia’s leather and date sectors by : Abdelaziz, Fatma
Download or read book A study of Tunisia’s leather and date sectors written by Abdelaziz, Fatma and published by Intl Food Policy Res Inst. This book was released on 2021-12-31 with total page 51 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on field visits, structured interviews, and reviews of the literature and secondary data, we examine major challenges facing the leather and date clusters in Tunisia. The challenges vary greatly between the clusters. The leather and footwear industry faces a decline in external demand. After the global economic crisis in the late 2000s and the Arab Spring in the early 2010s, the sector lost international competitiveness. To revitalize the sector, policies should be designed to expand markets for leather and footwear. Exploring trade agreement with the US, leveling the tariff rate for intermediate goods and shoes, attracting foreign direct investment, and improving leather quality are among potential policy options. Implementing these policies will require coordination among different government agencies and private sector stakeholders. Besides demand challenges, lack of water treatment also is a major challenge facing tanneries across Tunisia. The international demand for Tunisian dates has been very strong. Most of the major challenges are on the supply side, such as value chain coordination, inadequate water supply, labor shortages, diseases, lack of new varieties, and limited value addition. The supply-side policy options include diversifying varieties and expanding into date derivative and palm waste products, promoting labor-saving mechanization and water-saving irrigation technologies, and improving coordination along the value chain.

Download or read book Tunisia's Global Integration written by and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2009 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tunisia's past integration policies have significantly increased FDI flows in the manufacturing sector, triggering a rise of textiles and clothing and mechanical and electrical components exports through participation to EU production networks and increasing productivity, growth, and job creation. In spite of these results, important challenges remain. FDI increases are not accompanied by a rapid increase in domestic investment. The business climate of the domestic market-oriented sector can be further improved. Trade integration largely has bypassed non-tourism service sectors and the structural transformation of the service sector is slow. This study: (i) examines the key integration challenges that the country's manufacturing sector is facing; (ii) examine the key remaining reforms needed to further enhance the competitive position of the country; and (iii) identifies the specific policy reforms needed to realize the largely untapped potential in services. The report reviews the entry, business, and trade restrictions in Tunisia's backbone service sectors (telecommunication, banking, air transport, accounting, auditing, and legal services) using a well-focused regulatory questionnaire. The restrictiveness indices derived from the regulatory diagnostic analysis allow us to assess Tunisia's relative performance. Some key regulatory reform options are proposed and their impact estimated. The study examines the prospect for further increasing exports and off shoring of a large number of services for which Tunisia has demonstrated a real export capacity

Download or read book Tunisia written by Anna Carew-Miller and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2014-10-21 with total page 185 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tunisia is a small nation on the Mediterranean coast of North Africa. An Arab country in which the people are predominantly Muslim. Tunisia nonetheless maintains strong ties to Europe and good relations with its African neighbors. Among the countries of the Arab world Tunisia is considered a moderate state; its policies, unlike those of neighboring Libya, are generally favorable to the United States and the West. The country is not without its problems, however. Religious fundamentalists, who want Tunisia to impose strict Islamic laws on the country, have caused unrest since the 1980s. In addition, political power is concentrated in the hands of a few people. Many hope that one day Tunisia will create a truly democratic society, in which all of the people can participate in improving their country. Discusses the geography, history, economy, government, religion, people, foreign relations, and major cities of Tunisia.
Book Synopsis Recent Advances in Environmental Science from the Euro-Mediterranean and Surrounding Regions (2nd Edition) by : Mohamed Ksibi
Download or read book Recent Advances in Environmental Science from the Euro-Mediterranean and Surrounding Regions (2nd Edition) written by Mohamed Ksibi and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-04-09 with total page 2249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book includes over three hundred and seventy-five short papers presented during the second EMCEI, which was held in Sousse, Tunisia in October 2019. After the success of the first EMCEI in 2017, the second installment tackled emerging environmental issues together with new challenges, e.g. by focusing on innovative approaches that contribute to achieving a sustainable environment in the Mediterranean and surrounding regions and by highlighting to decision makers from related sectors the environmental considerations that should be integrated into their respective activities. Presenting a wide range of environmental topics and new findings relevant to a variety of problems in these regions, this volume will appeal to anyone working in the subject area and particularly to students interested in learning more about new advances in environmental research initiatives in view of the worsening environmental degradation of the Mediterranean and surrounding regions, which has made environmental and resource protection into an increasingly important issue hampering sustainable development and social welfare.
