Book excerpt: “An intoxicating blend of music, love, and family from one of the essential writers of the internet generation” (Stephanie Danler). Have you ever wondered what your mother was like before she became your mother, and what she gave up in order to have you? It’s the early days of the new millennium, and Laura has arrived in New York City’s East Village in the hopes of recording her first album. A songwriter with a one-of-a-kind talent, she’s just beginning to book gigs with her beautiful best friend when she falls hard for a troubled but magnetic musician whose star is on the rise. Their time together is stormy and short-lived—but will reverberate for the rest of Laura’s life. Fifteen years later, Laura’s teenage daughter, Marie, is asking questions about her father, questions that Laura does not want to answer. Laura has built a stable life in Brooklyn that bears little resemblance to the one she envisioned when she left Ohio all those years ago, and she’s taken pains to close the door on what was and what might have been. But neither her best friend, now a famous musician who relies on Laura’s songwriting skills, nor her depressed and searching daughter will let her give up on her dreams. “A zippy and profound story of love, loss, heredity, and parenthood (Emma Straub), Perfect Tunes explores the fault lines in our most important relationships, and asks whether dreams deferred can ever be reclaimed. It is a delightful and poignant tale of music and motherhood, ambition and compromise—of life, in all its dissonance and harmony.

Book excerpt: One of NPR's Best Books of the Year: This darkly funny and provocative novel reimagines classic fairy tale characters as modern women in a support group for trauma. In present-day New York City, five women meet in a basement support group to process their traumas. Bernice grapples with the fallout of dating a psychopathic, blue-bearded billionaire. Ruby, once devoured by a wolf, now wears him as a coat. Gretel questions her memory of being held captive in a house made of candy. Ashlee, the winner of a Bachelor-esque dating show, wonders if she really got her promised fairy tale ending. And Raina's love story will shock them all. Though the women start out wary of one another, judging each other’s stories, gradually they begin to realize that they may have more in common than they supposed . . . What really brought them here? What secrets will they reveal? And is it too late for them to rescue each other? Dark, edgy, and wickedly funny, this debut for readers of Carmen Maria Machado, Kristen Arnett, and Kelly Link takes our coziest, most beloved childhood stories, exposes them as anti-feminist nightmares, and transforms them into a new kind of myth for grown-up women. *Belletrist June Book Club Pick* Named a Best Book of May by TIME Magazine & Glamour One of NPR’s Best Books of the Year

Book Synopsis Short Stories from a Fren Da Mein by : Mat Albano
Download or read book Short Stories from a Fren Da Mein written by Mat Albano and published by Xlibris. This book was released on 2014-02 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a collection of short stories, proverbs, questions, poems, songs and other miscellaneous items from a friend of mine. This person wishes to remain anonymous, those who know him will recognize him right away. The stories were inspired from the Bible but taken from a different perspective than usually seen. You may or may not enjoy them depending on your perspective. If you gain something from them, that's great. If not, discard what you have and move on. The proverbs are a collection from many people who have affected my life through the years, some are original. The stories are an attempt to get you to see things in a different light, from a different perspective. Most are based on the bible, as many writers of stories, songs and proverbs do. The bible has been the world's greatest book ever published, though it has been an awesome attempt to read and understand. Many things in it can be interpreted in many different ways, "A double edged sword", all of which can be right or wrong, depending on your point of view. The real truth is that the bible in it's entirety is truth, it speaks of the truth, for the truth and by the truth. There have been those who have chose to write love stories, while others have chosen to write horror stories, both are in there. Both can be right or wrong depending on your perspective. Both can be the same story ! If you view the bible as love stories, it will come across as such most of the time. On the other hand, if you view it as horror stories it will come across as such, most of the time. It's sort of like the difference between God and Satan. Both are part of our lives, both affect our lives. This book will make some happy and offend others, not because of what's in it, but purely on their of view. This is true of anything that was ever written including the Bible ( and that includes all bibles ). I hope you enjoy it one way or the other or both. Maybe one day soon, verily soon, we can all be friends like this "Fren Da Mein"
