Book excerpt: As the sun begins to set, arctic animals scurry to prepare for six months of darkness and cold. Tuktuk the collared lemming is almost ready for the long winter night – all he needs is warm fur to line his nest. When one furry kamik (boot) slips off an Inuit driver’s sled, Tuktuk is in luck! But as he drags it home, Putak the polar bear, Aput the arctic fox, and Masak the caribou eye this little lemming’s prize and want it for their own. Can Tuktuk outwit the other animals and convince them that one furry kamik is no good for anyone bigger than a lemming?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tundra Tales is a story of life in the Far North. As a public health nurse I spent time with the Alaska Natives and as I became acquainted with them, I learned about their dreams and their heartaches, their ambitions and their disappointments, and we became friends. I should like to dedicate this book to the Natives of Interior Alaska, the Inupiat Eskimos and the Athabascan Indians. I became acquainted with, worked among, and learned to love these people. It was a privilege to work and live with these earthy, loving and extraordinary Natives] They shared their joys and sorrows with me, and as we worked together, our lives became inextricably bound together as our goals became the same. The book is an attempt to portray the life I lived with these Natives, and we shared not only the health care provided but we learned about each other, and our friendship grew and broadened, and our understanding grew. So my book is dedicated to the Natives of Alaska, especially those of the Interior. I also am very grateful to Bob Callahan for his assistance in putting this book together. I would never have been able to finish it were it not for his help with format, and with the computer, and with every area in compiling the book. I appreciate his help more than I can ever say. He has been a wonderful teacher. I also want to thank my friend Charles Hugo, for help with the computer. Whenever I got stuck, and something would go wrong he was usually there to help me. So iv for those who made it possible to write my book I am grateful. Some of the names of people I have written about have been changed to protect the privacy of individuals.

Book excerpt: “The newspaper headline declared in large bold letters: “Shoot Out At High Noon.” Reading the first paragraph of the article disclosed the truth of the old saying, “don’t take a knife to a gun fight.” The man with the knife lay dead on the ground, while the fellow with the rifle fled the scene in his blue Ford F-150 full-size pickup truck” (from “The Love Triangle”). Tales and Torts: Stories of a Country Lawyer is a unique collection of short stories proving the axiom, “sometimes the truth is stranger than fiction.” Each story recounted is based on a real legal case and each illuminates the human condition. Love, prized animals, tragedy, murder, swindlers and thieves, disgruntled family members, and hardened criminals. These tales involve a wide variety of cases in many areas of the law with astonishing fact patterns and extraordinary individuals chosen out of thousands of cases over a forty-year legal career. From the Jewish Russian tenor escaping religious persecution in Russia, to the Tongan travelling to experience the miracle of snow in Canada, to Li jing, whose life was tragically altered on Chinese New Year’s Eve, each character is brought to life with humour, compassion, and an eye to achieving one goal: justice.

Book excerpt: The vicious Water Sprite War has ended, and the Forest Elves have returned home. Drisandel, who led the Forest Elves in the war, succeeds his deceased father as village Chieftain. Garnidel, Drisandel’s son and talented apprentice smith to his mother, Shaelesse, begins to prepare as the heir to his father as Chieftain by travelling through the Forest Elf Nation, learning of its history and the legends of so-called “Fire Sprites,” and searching for a potential wife (even as he staves off feelings for the betrothed of a beloved friend). He also encounters the enigmatic Desert Elves, neighbours of the Forest Elves who were once a unified people with them. Garnidel’s education is cut shorter than expected when Humans bearing arms suddenly begin encroaching into the territory of the Forest Elves. As the battle to defend the Forest Elf territory begins, Garnidel now must quickly grow into his role as a battlefield leader and develop a plan to stave off the superior numbers of the Human invasion. Can the new weapons and tools he developed in the forge allow the Forest Elves some advantage? And can the Forest Elves count the Desert Elves as allies? The Grand Chieftain is the continuation of the fantasy epic begun in Willow: Awakened, Ascended, Avenged, and volume 2 of the Willow’s Wake trilogy. With thrilling battles and the exploration of fascinating new frontiers in an already rich fantasy world, The Grand Chieftain will captivate fans of the series, readers just journeying into it, and lovers of fantasy new and old.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The essays in Home Words explore the complexity of the idea of home through various theoretical lenses and groupings of texts. One focus of this collection is the relation between the discourses of nation, which often represent the nation as home, and the discourses of home in children’s literature, which variously picture home as a dwelling, family, town or region, psychological comfort, and a place to start from and return to. These essays consider the myriad ways in which discourses of home underwrite both children’s and national literatures. Home Words reconfigures the field of Canadian children’s literature as it is usually represented by setting the study of English- and French-language texts side by side, and by paying sustained attention to the diversity of work by Canadian writers for children, including both Aboriginal peoples and racialized Canadians. It builds on the literary histories, bibliographical essays, and biographical criticism that have dominated the scholarship to date and sets out to determine and establish new directions for the study of Canadian children’s literature.

Will Obstaclēs overcome? Or will the littlest giant let his deferred dream explode and embrace a fresh start?

Book excerpt: In Travelers' Tales Alaska, contemporary adventurers, seekers, and lifelong Alaskans take you into the "Last Frontier" for wild and poignant adventures. Walk among bears, witness the Inupiat taking of a bowhead whale, and spend time "weathered-in" on the Bering Sea coast. Follow the seasons of commercial fisherfolk in the world's most dangerous seas, sail the Inside Passage, or flight-see with bush pilots famed for high-stakes navigation around Denali, North America's highest mountain. Discover the 49th state’s quirky side, including an entire town that lives in a single World War II-vintage high-rise, a "Hairy Man" who roams the Bush, and backcountry gourmands who communicate with edible plants. Drive the Alaska Highway or head north along the pipeline Haul Road to the Arctic coast, not simply to get there, but to be there. Get the inside view as Alaskans share their stories of learning a new land or guiding tourists through Native culture. Whether you choose camping at Wal-Mart or casting for grayling on a lake named Paradise, whether you travel the Great Land in actuality or in your armchair, these stories bring Alaska alive, in all its latter-day complexity and glory.
