Book excerpt: This book offers an essential guide to surgical approaches to the umbilicus. The navel is the only natural scar in the body, accepted for all human beings all over the world. Its absence or distortions can have negative psychological impacts, as it normally lends beauty and harmony to the otherwise unattractive abdomen. The aesthetic importance of the navel justifies the increasing amount of individuals undergoing abdominoplasty and omphaloplasty. However, these surgeries may lead to a series of complications or unintended aesthetic outcomes. Indeed, the postsurgical final aspect of the umbilicus is the main stigma and primary source of problems and complaints following abdominoplasty. In this book readers will find a complete surgical guide to the most important surgical approaches and strategies related to the navel, helping them to deliver a high standard of quality and patient-tailored surgical and aesthetic outcomes. Written by a renowned plastic surgeons with more than 20 years of experience, Omphaloplasty - A Surgical Guide of the Umbilicus offers readers an overview of general and innovative surgical techniques for the umbilicus, helping them to make the best choice when performing abdominoplasties.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Introduction to 6800/6802 Microprocessor Systems: Hardware, Software and Experimentation introduces the reader to the features, characteristics, operation, and applications of the 6800/6802 microprocessor and associated family of devices. Many worked examples are included to illustrate the theoretical and practical aspects of the 6800/6802 microprocessor. Comprised of six chapters, this book begins by presenting several aspects of digital systems before introducing the concepts of fetching and execution of a microprocessor instruction. Details and descriptions of hardware elements (MPU, RAM, ROM, PIA, etc.) necessary for the design and implementation of dedicated systems are also considered. Subsequent chapters focus on how the 6800/6802 microprocessor can be programmed at the machine-code level and by assembler programming techniques; the principles involved in interfacing the MPU system to peripheral equipment; practical aspects of parallel and serial data transfer techniques using the PIA and ACIA, respectively; hardware and software features of the Motorola MEK6802D5E evaluation system. The book concludes by discussing details of 12 investigations that may be undertaken using the MEK6802D5E evaluation system. This monograph is intended for students, technicians, scientists, and engineers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Microprocessor System Design: A Practical Introduction describes the concepts and techniques incorporated into the design of electronic circuits, particularly microprocessor boards and their peripherals. The book reviews the basic building blocks of the electronic systems composed of digital (logic levels, gate output circuitry) and analog components (resistors, capacitors, diodes, transistors). The text also describes operational amplifiers (op-amp) that use a negative feedback technique to improve the parameters of the op-amp. The design engineer can use programmable array logic (PAL) to replace standard discrete TTL and CMOS gates in circuits. The PAL is programmable and configurable to match the requirement of a given circuit. Using PAL can save space, a very important factor in the miniaturization process. Examples of PAL applications include the BCD counter, the LS 138 emulator, and a priority interrupt encoder. The book also explains the operation and function of a microprocessor, the bus-based systems, analog-to-digital conversion, and vice-versa. The text is suitable for programmers, computer engineers, computer technicians, and computer instructors dealing with many aspects of computers such as programming, networking, engineering or design.

Book excerpt: Power relationships between men and women have been discussed extensively in feminist literature, but power relationships between women the significance of in-law relationships between women has largely been overlooked. There is very little positive imagery surrounding the role of the mother-in-law.; Why do myths about "interfering" mothers-in-law predominate? Why are mother-in-law relationships seen as fraught with conflict and not expected to go well? What gives rise to these ideas, how are they maintained and how do they effect family life?; "Friendly Relations?" examines the popular imagery expressed in mother-in-law jokes, and demonstrates how daughters-in-law come to hold the balance of power in the relationship and are able to control it in ways not available to mothers-in-law. The book explores how these relationships are supported and maintained within the context of private and public Notions Family Life. It Traces The Development Of The Relationship through the life-course, demonstrating the influence of significant events such as divorce, cohabitation, grandparenting, ageing and widowhood.; The book tackles areas of private life which are often Difficult To Talk About, And Negative Emotions Such As Jealousy And possessiveness. Book excerpt: Past, Present, and Future of Knowledge Acquisition This book contains the proceedings of the 11th European Workshop on Kno- edge Acquisition, Modeling, and Management (EKAW ’99), held at Dagstuhl Castle (Germany) in May of 1999. This continuity and the high number of s- missions re?ect the mature status of the knowledge acquisition community. Knowledge Acquisition started as an attempt to solve the main bottleneck in developing expert systems (now called knowledge-based systems): Acquiring knowledgefromahumanexpert. Variousmethodsandtoolshavebeendeveloped to improve this process. These approaches signi?cantly reduced the cost of - veloping knowledge-based systems. However, these systems often only partially ful?lled the taskthey weredevelopedfor andmaintenanceremainedanunsolved problem. This required a paradigm shift that views the development process of knowledge-based systems as a modeling activity. Instead of simply transf- ring human knowledge into machine-readable code, building a knowledge-based system is now viewed as a modeling activity. A so-called knowledge model is constructed in interaction with users and experts. This model need not nec- sarily re?ect the already available human expertise. Instead it should provide a knowledgelevelcharacterizationof the knowledgethat is requiredby the system to solve the application task. Economy and quality in system development and maintainability are achieved by reusable problem-solving methods and onto- gies. The former describe the reasoning process of the knowledge-based system (i. e. , the algorithms it uses) and the latter describe the knowledge structures it uses (i. e. , the data structures). Both abstract from speci?c application and domain speci?c circumstances to enable knowledge reuse.

This volume examines the Mexican economy and its attempt to develop an innovation system, providing an example of the dynamics that are of concern to evolutionary economists.
