Book excerpt: Online dating is a growing and active industry that continues to grow in both usage and as a legitimate means of making social connections for dating, sex, and potential partnerships. "Truth, Lies, and Online Dating," shows people who want to use online dating services how to use technology to effectively market themselves and communicate who they are and who they are looking for. Unlike other online dating books out there, this book combines two critical components of online dating: communication skills and technology. Online dating represents an amazing new way of making connections but it requires technology skills in addition to social skills. "Truth, Lies, and Online Dating," approaches online dating in a no-nonsense and practical way and includes a "he said" and "she said" angle to give perspective from both sexes. Several technological components are covered as well as the mechanics of online dating services and how to put the search engines of those services to work to find the best dates. Tips on reputable online dating services, how to try services before subscribing to them, the importance of honesty and awareness of fraud are all covered. "Truth, Lies, and Online Dating," helps readers use technology to master written and visual communication techniques, understand the mechanics of dating services, and feel empowered, giving him or her the confidence to succeed in the online dating world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Internet is often presented as an unsafe or untrustworthy space: where children are preyed upon by paedophiles, cannibals seek out victims, offline relationships are torn apart by online affairs and where individuals are addicted to gambling, love, and cybersex. While many of these stories are grounded in truth, they do paint a rather sensationalized view of the Internet, the types of people who use it, and the interactions that take place online. Simultaneously, researchers claim that the Internet allows individuals to express their true selves, to develop 'hyperpersonal' relationships characterised by high levels of intimacy and closeness. At the heart of these competing visions of the Internet as a social space are the issues of truth, lies and trust. This book offers a balanced view of the Internet by presenting empirical data conducted by social scientists, with a concentrated focus on psychological studies. It argues that the Internet’s anonymity which can enable, for instance, high levels of self-disclosure in a relationship, is also responsible for many of its more negative outcomes such as deception and flaming. This is the first book to develop a coherent model of the truth-lies paradox, with specific reference to the critical role of trust. Truth, Lies and Trust on the Internet is a useful text for psychology students and academics interested in Internet behaviour, technology, and online deviant behaviour, and related courses in sociology, media studies and information studies.

Book excerpt: National bestseller A fresh, insightful guide to reading body language in the post-digital age Whether you’re at a job interview or a cocktail party, searching LinkedIn or swiping right on a dating site, you want (no—need) to understand what people are really thinking, regardless of what they’re saying. Understanding what others are trying to tell you with their posture, hand gestures, eye contact (or lack thereof) or incessant fiddling with their iPhone might all be even more important than what you’re projecting yourself. Do they plan on making a deal with your company? Are they lying to you? Can you trust this person with your most intimate secrets? Knowing what others are thinking can tell you when to run with an opportunity and when not to waste your time, whether at work, in a crucial negotiation or on a promising first date. Bestselling authors Mark Bowden and Tracey Thomson, principals at the communications company Truthplane, illustrate the essential points of body language with examples from everyday life, leavened with humour and insights that you can use to your advantage in virtually any situation.

Book excerpt: The Top 10 Things People Lie About on Online Dating Sites is a guide for men and women to help them in their pursuit of Love via Online Dating Sites. Let's face it, there are thousands of Online Dating Sites today and most people meet their partners, husbands, wives, girlfriends, boyfriends, friends with benefits and lovers on Online Dating Sites. The reality is most people are too busy working or just too shy to approach someone on the street to actually go out and hunt down a mate. Thanks to the Internet, you can now find love online or anything else you are looking for. I myself have been an Online Dater on and off since 2002. I have been on quite a few sites, some are not even around anymore because they have been bought out by the bigger names. This was way back when Online Dating was starting to get big. I think it is a great way to meet someone but you have to be very cautious. I met my x-Husband on Match.com in 2002. He was the first guy I saw on there that I was attracted to. I didn't even bother looking around once I saw him. I contacted him first and needless to say he lied about almost everything and I was too naive and ignored all of the warning signs. We dated for five years before we got married and he never really changed. He was a Cheater, Liar and a Manipulator who had a handful of women at his disposal at any given time that he used for different purposes. I was his 'Trophy Girlfriend/Wife' yet he had many other women around the entire time we were dating and married. The whole disaster of the relationship was my fault because I allowed him to treat me that way and I kept forgiving him and taking him back. Yes, that's what I said, the whole thing was my fault because as soon as he lied the first time I should have got out and I didn't. I have learned some hard lessons and the purpose of this book is to help my fellow Online Daters see and recognize the lies that people tell on their profiles and when dating online. I have learned that if someone lies about a little thing for example, where they live, they are hiding something and will lie about anything. It's up to you to weed out the dishonest Online Daters so you have a chance at finding true love. Practically all the relationships I know are based on a foundation of lies and mutually accepted delusion. Kim Cattrall"

Book excerpt: Travel writer Claire Spencer doesn't believe in fate, much less any part of that fairy tale, happy ending, love at first sight stuff. Especially not for Amazon-sized women like her. So when Jack, the sexy man who sits next to her on a flight from New York to London, asks her out, Claire figures there has to be a catch. Is he blind? Sleazy? On the rebound? But she decides to accept, and finds herself smitten and a little frightened at how happy she is with how fast things are moving. While in London (on assignment for Sassy Seniors! magazine), Claire is also looking forward to seeing her best friend, Maddy, one of those impossibly gorgeous, if-I-didn't-love-her-I'd-hate-her women who's got everything in the world going for her--except that, for the first time in her trouble-free life, Maddy has just been dumped...by Jack. Claire's finally met what seems to be the perfect guy, and now the only way she can have him is by betraying her best friend. It's almost enough to make Claire believe in Fate, but if Fate does exist, it seems intent on screwing her over.

To salvage Jocelyn's reputation, Megan must locate the online troll and expose the lies. But when the trail leads to blackmail, and circles back to her own mother, Megan realizes if she pulls any harder on this thread, what should have been the scoop of her career could unravel into a tabloid nightmare. This book was released on 2013-12-03 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on a study using online ethnography as the major research method, this book explains why and how men in Hong Kong use QQ—an online instant messenger—to “chase” women in mainland China, especially in the neighboring city of Shenzhen. Chasing women through QQ is a reciprocal exchange process during which the resources to be exchanged in the interaction are not negotiated. Rather, the men provide resources to the women, hoping for rewards in return that are not guaranteed. This characteristic of the exchange makes men who chase women through QQ very strategic in their action. They try to maximize the rewards and minimize the costs by adopting myriad strategies, such as constructing an attractive online identity by strategic self-presentation. The role of emotions in the exchange process is also examined. Men learn the emotional norms through the online forum, but sometimes it is difficult for them to control their emotions; some men fall in love when they are not supposed to. As it happens, they have failed to calculate the costs and rewards rationally in that they may provide too many resources to the women without getting enough rewards in return. This book provides original insights into the thought processes, motivations, desires, anxieties and risks of Hong Kong men seeking short-term sexual relations with women on the mainland. These insights are highly relevant to our understanding of the quickly evolving use of social media, a phenomenon of worldwide importance and deep implications.
