The role of the history is essential to understand the way both fiduciary figures developed in the Common and Civil law, hence it is integrated with the comparison in this study. Issues such as transplanting law or rules from one system to another are mentioned, since the institution of English trust has been developed in many Hispanic-American countries - including Colombia - despite of coming from a Roman legal tradition. An important part of this study, will be the differences of the fiduciary figures as a result of the significance of equity in the English law and its strong influence in trust law, which explains the distinct elements with the Colombian equivalent. For this reason, the latin "fiducia" is not exactly as the English trust, it has been adopted clinging on the legal traditions country-specific. However, understanding the way they have developed is fundamental, with the globalisation it has become a need to find the unification of business instruments in the Commercial Law that has become increasingly towards the unification.

Though this was the catalyst, the book serves a broader purpose: to survey recent frontier work on cities, nation-states, and the relations between the two in historical and contemporary perspective. Essays in the book will address four main themes: city-state relations, trust networks and commitment, democracy and inequality, and the importance of historical legacies in shaping state structures, practices, and capacities. They will be global in scope, with research on the United States, Latin America, Europe, Asia, and Africa; a number of the pieces will be comparative. They will also be interdisciplinary, including works of geography, history, political science, sociology, urban planning. The book addresses several confluent needs of readers. One is to simply update themes addressed in earlier edited work such as Bringing the State Back In (1985). A second is to bring together current thinking about cities on the one hand and nation-states on the other, literatures that are often segregated from each other. A third is to perform those two purposes in a way that is global in scope and combines both historical and current analyses, to pull together insights from the full range of human experience.

Book excerpt: Political scientists have worried about declining levels of citizens' support for their regimes (legitimacy), but have failed to empirically link this decline to the survival or breakdown of democracy. This apparent paradox is the 'legitimacy puzzle', which this book addresses by examining political legitimacy's structure, sources, and effects. With exhaustive empirical analysis of high-quality survey data from eight Latin American nations, it confirms that legitimacy exists as multiple, distinct dimensions. It finds that one's position in society, education, knowledge, information, and experiences shape legitimacy norms. Contrary to expectations, however, citizens who are unhappy with their government's performance do not drop out of politics or resort mainly to destabilizing protest. Rather, the disaffected citizens of these Latin American democracies participate at high rates in conventional politics and in such alternative arenas as communal improvement and civil society. And despite regime performance problems, citizen support for democracy remains high.
