Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A fresh exploration of atonement, rooted in the theology of trust Atonement—the restoration of right relationship with God, which God has made possible for humanity through Christ—is the good news of Christianity. How ought Christians think about the epicenter of salvation history? Teresa Morgan takes up this longstanding question and—in a significant departure from both classical and modern theologians—proposes new answers that are rooted in the concept of trust (pistis). Weaving together exegesis and theology, sociology and psychology, Morgan defines atonement as the restoration of trust between God and humanity through the trust and trustworthiness of Jesus Christ. Her model has important implications for Christians’ understanding of sin, suffering, and the possibility of forgiveness and restoration of trust among human beings.

Download or read book Atonement written by Eleonore Stump and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2018 with total page 557 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The doctrine of the Atonement is the distinctive doctrine of Christianity. Over the course of many centuries of reflection, highly diverse interpretations of the doctrine have been proposed. In the context of this history of interpretation, Eleonore Stump considers the doctrine afresh with philosophical care. Whatever exactly the Atonement is, it is supposed to include a solution to the problems of the human condition, especially its guilt and shame. Stump canvasses the major interpretations of the doctrine that attempt to explain this solution and argues that all of them have serious shortcomings. In their place, she argues for an interpretation that is both novel and yet traditional and that has significant advantages over other interpretations, including Anselm's well-known account of the doctrine. In the process, she also discusses love, union, guilt, shame, forgiveness, retribution, punishment, shared attention, mind-reading, empathy, and various other issues in moral psychology and ethics."--

Download or read book The Atonement written by R.W. Dale and published by Ravenio Books. This book was released on 2013-11-10 with total page 442 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Robert William Dale (1829 – 1895) was an English Congregationalist pastor who ministered at Carr's Lane Chapel in Birmingham for over 40 years. His 1875 Lectures on the Atonement have remained in print for almost 150 years. John Stott tells the story of a minister who approached Martyn Lloyd-Jones in the early years of his ministry and observed that the finished work of Christ had little place in his preaching. Lloyd-Jones immediately visited a used bookstore and asked for any volumes on the atonement. The owner brought out James Denney's The Death of Christ and R. W. Dale's The Atonement. To the concern of his wife, Lloyd-Jones locked himself in his room, so absorbed in these two books he refused even to eat. When he emerged several days later, he exclaimed that he had found "the real heart of the gospel and the key to the inner meaning of the Christian faith."

Book Synopsis Understanding Atonement by : Gary A. Fox
Download or read book Understanding Atonement written by Gary A. Fox and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2019-09-24 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At some point in the Christian faith journey, most people ask the question, “Why did Jesus die?” The most common answer is, “For my sins.” But what if Jesus died because of the sin of humanity, not for individual sins? It seems weirdly illogical for a God who is love (1 John 4:8) to demand a blood sacrifice to cover sin. It is not what the Jewish sacrificial system supported either. I hope that this book will help us understand that God loves us and will not forsake us. Ever. Forgiveness is about love, not punishment.

Some references to it have been positive, some negative. It appears to be important, and they'd like to know more about it. But they want a full, understandable explanation, not a simplistic one. What Is Reformed Theology? is an accessible introduction to beliefs that have been immensely influential in the evangelical church. In this insightful book, R. C. Sproul walks readers through the foundations of the Reformed doctrine and explains how the Reformed belief is centered on God, based on God's Word, and committed to faith in Jesus Christ. Sproul explains the five points of Reformed theology and makes plain the reality of God's amazing grace.
Book Synopsis Atonement and the Death of Christ by : William Lane Craig
Download or read book Atonement and the Death of Christ written by William Lane Craig and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Through his death on the cross, Christ atoned for sin and so reconciled people to God. New Testament authors drew upon a range of metaphors and motifs to describe this salvific act, and down through history Christian thinkers have tried to articulate various theories to explain the atonement. While Christ's sacrifice serves as a central tenet of the Christian faith, the mechanism of atonement--exactly how Christ effects our salvation--remains controversial and ambiguous to many Christians. In Atonement and the Death of Christ, William Lane Craig conducts an interdisciplinary investigation of this crucial Christian doctrine, drawing upon Old and New Testament studies, historical theology, and analytic philosophy. The study unfolds in three discrete parts: Craig first explores the biblical basis of atonement and unfolds the wide variety of motifs used to characterize this doctrine. Craig then highlights some of the principal alternative theories of the atonement offered by great Christian thinkers of the premodern era. Lastly, Craig's exploration delves into a constructive and innovative engagement with philosophy of law, which allows an understanding of atonement that moves beyond mystery and into the coherent mechanism of penal substitution. Along the way, Craig enters into conversation with contemporary systematic theories of atonement as he seeks to establish a position that is scripturally faithful and philosophically sound. The result is a multifaceted perspective that upholds the suffering of Christ as a substitutionary, representational, and redemptive act that satisfies divine justice. In addition, this carefully reasoned approach addresses the rich tapestry of Old Testament imagery upon which the first Christians drew to explain how the sinless Christ saved his people from the guilt of their sins.
Download or read book Making Amends written by Linda Radzik and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2011-04-07 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is often assumed that wrongdoing can only be resolved through punishment or forgiveness. But this book explores the responses that wrongdoers can and should make to their own misdeeds, responses such as apology, repentance, reparations, and self-punishment. It examines the possibility of atonement in a broad spectrum of contexts -- from cases of relatively minor wrongs in personal relationships, to crimes, to the historical injustices of our political and religious communities. It argues that wrongdoers often have the ability to earn redemption within the moral community, that respect and trust among victims, communities and wrongdoers can be rebuilt, and that the moral responsibility of wrongdoing groups can be addressed without treating their members unfairly.

Book Synopsis Thinking About God's Love by : Lorraine Cavanagh
Download or read book Thinking About God's Love written by Lorraine Cavanagh and published by Fortress Press. This book was released on 2015-12-01 with total page 107 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are many people who are put off Christianity by the way the doctrines of atonement and redemption are communicated. People find it hard to believe in a loving God who appears at the same time to be so angry and vindictive. Many also feel that Christian teachings, publicly or privately, do not connect with them in any meaningful way. This is either because they are put off by the narrow theological framework in which Christianity is presented, or because what is said about atonement and redemption seems theoretical and remote from their experience of life. This book seeks to address some of the difficult questions that these people are asking. It is written for those who may be wanting to return to their faith, who would like to explore it in greater depth, or in a more open theological landscape. The intention is that readers will find in this book a new understanding of what it really means to live as people who have been forgiven and brought home into a more honest and deeper relationship with God through the atoning and redemptive work of Jesus Christ.
