Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At fourteen, Steve Truscott was a typical teenager in rural Ontario in the fifties, mainly concerned about going fishing, playing football, and racing bikes with his friends. One summer evening, his twelve-year-old classmate, Lynne Harper, asked for a lift to the nearby highway on his bicycle and Steve agreed. Unfortunately, that made Steve the last person known to see Lynne alive. His world collapsed around him when he was arrested and then convicted of killing Lynne Harper. The penalty at the time was death by hanging. Although the sentence was changed to life in prison, Steve suffered for years behind bars for a murder he didn't commit. When his case gained national attention, the Supreme Court of Canada reviewed the evidence -- and confirmed his conviction. It took over forty years and a determination to prove his innocence for him to finally clear his name. He has since received an apology and compensation for his ordeal. In this book, young readers will discover how an innocent boy was presumed guilty by the justice system, and how in the end, that same justice system, prodded by Truscott and his lawyers, was able to acknowledge the terrible wrong done to him. This book was released on 2009 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the 2nd report of the Committee for Privileges of the 2008-09 session (HLP 88-I, session 2008-09, ISBN 9780108444227) and looks at the conduct of Lord Moonie, Lord Snape, Lord Truscott and Lord Taylor of Blackburn. The background to this report, was a set of allegations by the The Sunday Times on 25 January 2009, stating that the peers had been willing to engage in paid advocacy. The Sub-Committee on Lords' Interests has reported on the conduct of the peers reaching the conclusion that three of the four members (Lord Snape, Truscott and Taylor) had breached the Code of Conduct. The main Committee in this report has examined the Sub-Committee's findings for each of the peers, along with three appeals from Lords Snape, Truscott and Taylor and a personal statement by one of the peers to the Committee. The Committee followed procedures as laid out by an earlier report (HLP 205, session 2007-08 - The Code of Conduct, ISBN 9780104014042). The Committee sets out a summary of conclusions in this report, focusing on the key points of the issue between the Sub-Committee and the three members who submitted appeals. The conclusions reached by the Committee, include: an endorsement of the Sub-Committee's exoneration of Lord Moonie of any breach of the Code of Conduct, but that he did make a number of unwise comments in respect of the Code of Conduct and should make a personal statement of apology to the House; the Committee upholds the appeal of Lord Snape against the Sub-Committee's findings and that he did not express clear willingness to exercise parliamentary influence in return for financial inducements, but he also demonstrated an inappropriate attitude to the rules governing the conduct of members and should apologise to the House; the Committee upholds the Sub-Committee's findings in respect of both Lord Truscott and Lord Taylor of Blackburn, whose conversations with undercover journalists, showed a failure to act on their personal honour and therefore breached the Code and that both peers should be suspended from the service of the House until the end of the current session. Book excerpt: Reason for Reading: This book presents all the facts from both sides about Canada's most infamous crime. Reach your own conclusion by being objective and thinking critically. Synopsis: On a cold September day in 1959 a 14 year old Canadian schoolboy, in just his first encounter with the police and in a crime of passion, was sentenced by a jury to hang for the murder of his 12-year-old friend. Why I wrote this book: My greatest passion is to search for the truth in real crimes. Why you should read this book: This is probably the only book you will find in all of America's media about Steven Truscott and the Murder of 12-year-old Lynne Harper that is completely objective. Why you may avoid this book: There is an unconscious desire on the part of many to find greater meaning in the life and trials of Steven Truscott than is possible based upon the historical case. And so for them, there will always be an innocent Truscott. It simply has to be, no matter what.

Book excerpt: From the bestselling author of Dress Gray. “Part-war story, part-family saga . . . zeroes in on the men of the Blue family, three generations of soldiers” (The Washington Post). In the eagerly anticipated follow-up to his first novel, Dress Gray, Truscott turns his attention to the Vietnam War and delivers a suspenseful, sprawling court-martial drama set in Saigon in 1969. At twenty-three, platoon leader Lt. Matthew Nelson Blue is the youngest member of an army family; his father is a colonel and his grandfather a profane, cantankerous retired general. Shortly after one of his men is killed by friendly fire while on routine patrol, Blue is arrested and charged with desertion in the face of the enemy. Arriving in Vietnam, his father and grandfather end their long estrangement and join forces to clear the young soldier’s name. Truscott’s plot offers less than initially meets the eye; the nature of the conspiracy and cover-up that nearly destroy Blue is fairly easy to predict, as is the disillusionment about Vietnam that eventually befalls his seniors. The author’s intimate portrayal of the texture of army life gives his narrative a more deeply felt sense of anger and regret than others in its genre, and makes its final revelations more powerful than they might otherwise have been.

Book excerpt: This New York Times–bestselling novel about a crime and cover-up at West Point offers “a compelling portrait of the military academy” (The New York Times). Ry Slaight is a young cadet at the United States Military Academy, walking punishment tours in May 1968, when he hears that the body of a plebe has been found floating in Lake Popolopen. Supposedly, it was an accident—but it’s not long before Slaight learns details about the autopsy suggesting a much darker story. Slaight’s personal quest to uncover the truth—and the authorities’ efforts to keep it from him—will reveal both heroes and villains within the Long Gray Line in this “frightening novel about ‘a secret cult headquartered on the Hudson behind a stone façade.’ . . . The author mounts an attack on his alma mater with brilliance and fury” (Newsday).

Book excerpt: Steven Truscott was fourteen years old in 1959 when an Ontario court sentenced him to hang for a brutal murder he didn’t commit. In June 1959, the dead body of a missing twelve-year-old girl named Lynne Harper was found in a woodlot in Clinton, Ontario, a small community near a military base. Police zeroed in on Steven Truscott, a fourteen-year-old classmate who gave Lynne a bike ride the night she was murdered. Steven maintained his innocence throughout a tough police interrogation and a speedy trial. Despite a lack of physical evidence connecting him to the crime, a court convicted Steven of murder and a judge sentenced him to hang. The sentence was commuted, and doubts grew about the case. New research pointed to a wrongful conviction — a conclusion that gave Steven hope as he fought to clear his name. A shocking story about a terrible crime in a small-town and the awful miscarriage of justice that followed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Manufacturing Guilt, 2nd edition, updates the cases presented in the first edition and includes two new chapters: one concerning the case of James Driskell and another regarding Dr. Charles Smith, whose role in forensic pathology evidence led to several wrongful convictions. In this new edition, the authors demonstrate that the same factors at play in the criminalization of the powerless and marginalized are found in cases of wrongful conviction. Contrary to popular belief, wrongful convictions are not due simply to “unintended errors,” but rather are too often the result of the deliberate actions of those working in the criminal justice system. Using Canadian cases of miscarriages of justice, the authors argue that understanding wrongful convictions and how to prevent them is incomplete outside the broader societal context in which they occur, particularly regarding racial and social inequality.

Book excerpt: “A solid men’s adventure yarn with loving descriptions of cars and their capabilities, and action scenes full of derring-do” from the bestselling author (Publishers Weekly). “Truscott, author of Army Blue and Dress Gray, has the makings of another hit here in this novel of old-fashioned honor and courage up against raw, violent political power. Major Sam Butterfield, en route to his new base in Kentucky, sees a man being savagely beaten and charges to the rescue. He ends up over his head in hot water; the man he rescued is blackmailing the political boss of southern Illinois, and Sam has accidentally been handed the evidence. When a friend who helps him escape is murdered, Sam, together with pool shark Johnny Gee and an old girlfriend in the governor’s office, stalks the politician to get evidence that will put him away forever.” —Library Journal

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: General George C. Marshall, chief of staff of the U.S. Army during World War II, faced the daunting task not only of overseeing two theaters of a global conflict but also of selecting the best generals to carry out American grand strategy. Marshall and His Generals is the first and only book to focus entirely on that selection process and the performances, both stellar and disappointing, that followed from it. Stephen Taaffe chronicles and critiques the background, character, achievements, and failures of the more than three dozen general officers chosen for top combat group commands—from commanders like Dwight Eisenhower and Douglas MacArthur to some nearly forgotten. Taaffe explores how and why Marshall selected the Army’s commanders. Among his chief criteria were character (including “unselfish and devoted purpose”), education, (whether at West Point, Fort Leavenworth, or the Army War College), and striking a balance between experience and relative youth in a war that required both wisdom and great physical stamina. As the war unfolded, Marshall also factored into his calculations the combat leadership his generals demonstrated and the opinions of his theater commanders. Taaffe brings into sharp focus the likes of Eisenhower, MacArthur, George Patton, Omar Bradley, Walter Krueger, Robert Eichelberger, Courtney Hodges, Lucian Truscott, J. Lawton Collins, Alexander “Sandy” Patch, Troy Middleton, Matthew Ridgeway, Mark Clark, and twenty-five other generals who served in the conflict. He describes their leadership and decision-making processes and provides miniature biographies and personality sketches of these men drawn from their personal papers, official records, and reflections of fellow officers. Delving deeper than other studies, this path-breaking work produces a seamless analysis of Marshall’s selection process of operational-level commanders. Taaffe also critiques the performance of these generals during the war and reveals the extent to which their actions served as stepping stones to advancement. Ambitious in scope and filled with sharp insights, Marshall and His Generals is essential reading for anyone interested in World War II and military leadership more generally.
