Book excerpt: My philosophy towards life became the one as stated in this quote by Shyam: “If you wish to enjoy life as nectar and honey, make sure your banks and trousers have sufficient money.” Life About an EMI is the story of a small-town boy Shyam who dwells in the heart of every middle-class Indian who has huge aspirations from life and wants to lead the world through his intrinsic and inborn qualities – until at every step he is made to believe that life is not a bed of roses, but instead a struggle, and that you are here to earn your living and sacrifice the rest for family’s nurturing. Shyam’s childhood orientation paved the way for a life towards accumulations, possessions, social obligations and worldly emotions, until nature showered her grace upon him in the form of Radha. Radha entered his life as a fragrance of divine love and made him understand the importance of balance in life. She became a gift of God who blew him away with such an intensity of selfless love that her physical and metaphysical presence changed the course of his life. It was time for Shyam now to decide how to lead his life. Compulsively or consciously? Incompletely or absolutely? Desperately or willingly? Abruptly or profoundly? Was he willing to continue his life as an Equated Monthly Instalment? Or was he striving to live it with Each Minute Insight? What Shyam decided changed his life from an unconscious piece of life getting transformed in a radiant, vibrant & absolute conscious ray of light for humanity that became known to the world as Swami Shyam Charandasjee Maharaj.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The emergent culture of crime writings in late 19th century colonial Bengal (India) is an interesting testimony to how literature is shaped by various material forces including the market. This book deals with true crime writings of the late 1800s published by ‘lowbrow publishing houses’ — infamous for publishing ‘sensational’ and the ‘vulgar’ literature — which had an avid bhadralok (genteel) readership. The volume focuses on select translations of true crime writings by Bakaullah and Priyanath Mukhopadhyay who worked as darogas (Detective Inspectors) in the police department in mid-late nineteenth century colonised Bengal. These published accounts of cases investigated by them are among the very first manifestations of the crime genre in India. The writings reflect their understandings of criminality and guilt, as well as negotiations with colonial law and policing. Further, through a selection of cases in which women make an appearance either as victims or offenders, (or sometimes as both,) this book sheds light on the hidden gendered experiences of the time, often missing in mainstream Bangla literature. Combining a love for suspense with critical readings of a cultural phenomenon, this book will be of much interest to scholars and researchers of comparative literature, translation studies, gender studies, literary theory, cultural studies, modern history, and lovers of crime fiction from all disciplines.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Personal Growth & Mental Health Book. Your life Matters, give life a second chance, let me tell you my story. I wrote this book after I lost a son years ago and my world crumbled. I lost my mind, I lost my house, and my income was cut in half when my ex left with an 18-year-old girl. I did consider taking my own life. I Didn’t, and today I am grateful for it. It was not a quick awakening, I started writing my story to leave behind (After Taking My own life) So my children could understand why I did it. This turned into more questions than answers, so I started looking for those answers. As I wrote my Story I learned so much about myself. When I was done with my (now) book, I looked behind me and saw that the moment that broke me was far behind me.

Book excerpt: This book comprises details, not only interesting to every person concerned for the welfare of society, but useful to the world in pointing out the consequences of guilt to be equally dreadful and inevitable. The author noticed that in most of the works published before its release, little attention was paid to the ultimate moral or beneficial effects to be produced by them upon the public mind; and that while every effort is made to afford amusement, no care was taken to produce those general impressions, so necessary to the maintenance of virtue and good order. The advantages of precept are everywhere admitted and extolled; but still more effectual are the lessons which are taught through the influence of example, whose results are but too frequently fatal. The representation of guilt with its painful and degrading consequences, has been universally considered to be the best means of warning youth against the danger of temptation; the benefits to be expected from example are too plainly exhibited by the infliction of punishment to need repetition; and the more generally the effects of crime are shown, and the more the horrors which precede detection and the deplorable fate of the guilty are made known, the greater is the probability that the atrocity of vice may be abated and the security of the public promoted.

Then, a deceptively routine visit to a diet clinic and an encounter with two tall Dutch men turn her life inside out. Without much ado she speeds off on a Westward-bound spiritual quest, which involves cheating on her boyfriend, lying to everyone she loves and cutting off all ties with her safe, respectable, bourgeois Indian upbringing. In this picaresque travel memoir, novelist, cartoonist and award-winning playwright Manjula Padmanabhan looks back on her youthful misadventures in Europe. By turns funny and fierce, Getting There will touch anyone who has ever wanted to strip off their skin to waltz, however briefly, on the wild side.

Newer characters like James Bond, along with established icons such as Sherlock Holmes, Miss Marple and The Saint, all contributed to the era's bountiful array of cinematic mystery, danger, excitement and suspense. For the first time, the extensive output of British thrillers from 1950 to 1979 is covered in one volume. Themed chapters cover a total of 845 films including spy thrillers, mystery thrillers, psychological thrillers, action-adventure thrillers, and crime thrillers. Within these chapters, films appear chronologically, each with a synopsis/review. Additional information provided for each film includes production companies and alternate British and U.S. titles, and the work includes eight useful appendices.
