After years of going to the world's least happy countries, Eric Weiner, a veteran foreign correspondent, decided to travel and evaluate each country's different sense of happiness and discover the nation that seemed happiest of all. ·He discovers the relationship between money and happiness in tiny and extremely wealthy Qatar (and it's not a good one) ·He goes to Thailand, and finds that not thinking is a contented way of life. ·He goes to the tiny Himalayan kingdom of Bhutan, and discovers they have an official policy of Gross National Happiness! ·He asks himself why the British don't do happiness? In Weiner's quest to find the world's happiest places, he eats rotten Icelandic shark, meditates in Bangalore, visits strip clubs in Bangkok and drinks himself into a stupor in Reykjavik. Book excerpt: PRACTICAL TEACHINGS FOR PEACE AND FULFILLMENT In this clear introduction to the Vedanta philosophy of India, you'll discover a new perspective that can bring inner peace, inner strength and improve your relationships for a happier life. This spiritual book written by Paul Hourihan, an American, introduces these ancient teachings in a way that Westerners, in particular, can easily relate to and understand. Why learn about the teachings of Vedanta? - According to Vedanta, ignorance of our real nature is the cause of our suffering and grief. The practical application of this philosophy is the means to Self-discovery, integration and inner peace for those of all faiths and those with no particular faith. - By stressing the universal truths common to all religions, they provide a unifying basis for mutual understanding and peace in a world increasingly fragmented by opposing beliefs. - They provide a foundation for understanding why a moral and ethical life are necessary. - This knowledge gives us the means for realizing our true identity as Children of Immortal Bliss. Using the teachings of the Upanishads, this study covers the main principles and core concepts of Vedanta and covers important subjects such as meditation, nonattachment. It also provides an overview of the mysticism of India and a summary of the Yoga system of thought, as well as the Bhagavad Gita, another key Vedantic scripture. The last section reveals the universality of these teachings through confirmations of great mystics from other traditions including Plotinus, Lao Tzu, Meister Eckhart and the Sufis of Islam. Vedanta shows the way to inner peace, harmony among all peoples, and respect for all life.
Book Synopsis Order of the Day by : Daljit Singh Jawa
Download or read book Order of the Day written by Daljit Singh Jawa and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2016-11-11 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Appreciation No matter what the occasion, every Sikh religious service concludes with the reading of a hymn from the Guru Granth. Sikhs in attendance listen to it most raptly so as to understand this guiding message from the Guru Granth. But understanding the sacred poetry of Gurbani is not always so easy. At least four complete translations in English of the entire Guru Granth existby Manmohan Singh, Gopal Singh, Gurbachan Singh Talib, and Pritam Singh Chahalalong with many excellent translations of selections of Gurbani. However, Daljit Singh Jawas work is different.Mr. Jawa does not provide a literal translation of the entire shabad. Instead he gives the central idea of the shabad followed by a commentary on its theme and essential meaning. This would automatically enhance an understanding of the shabad. Sikhism teaches that the only way for a Sikh to talk to his Guru, the only way that the Guru in the Guru Granth comes alive is when a Sikh reads and tries to understand the word of the Guru. Mr. Jawas work - a labor of love - is an attempt to facilitate the latter. Sikh tradition dictates that this hymn is the one on the left page when the Guru Granth is opened at random, which usually means the middle half or so of the Guru Granth. Mr Jawas novel attempt takes advantage of this and his book covers only the first shabad on the left (even numbered) folia from pages 300 to 1100. Sikhs everywhere will find this book most useful as long as they are not content merely to read it as the final word but take it as a guide to foster further thinking and understanding about what they are reading. Download or read book Thoughts & Prayers written by Bryan Bliss and published by HarperCollins. This book was released on 2020-09-29 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “In his unflinching and resonant new novel, Bryan Bliss shows that there is no straight line through trauma, no easy recipe for healing. Instead, in three loosely connected stories of young people bound by an all-too familiar tragedy, he deftly illuminates the small moments of human connection and resolve that might just lead to a place of grace.”—Gayle Forman, bestselling author of If I Stay and I Have Lost My Way Fight. Flight. Freeze. What do you do when you can’t move on, even though the rest of the world seems to have? Powerful and tense, Thoughts & Prayers is an extraordinary novel that explores what it means to heal and to feel safe in a world that constantly chooses violence. Claire, Eleanor, and Brezzen have little in common. Claire fled to Minnesota with her older brother, Eleanor is the face of a social movement, and Brezzen retreated into the fantasy world of Wizards & Warriors. But a year ago, they were linked. They all hid under the same staircase and heard the shots that took the lives of some of their classmates and a teacher. Now, each one copes with the trauma as best as they can, even as the world around them keeps moving. Told in three loosely connected but inextricably intertwined stories, National Book Award–longlisted author Bryan Bliss’s Thoughts & Prayers follows three high school students in the aftermath of a school shooting. Thoughts & Prayers is a story about gun violence, but more importantly it is the story of what happens after the reporters leave and the news cycle moves on to the next tragedy. It is the story of three unforgettable teens who feel forgotten. For readers of Jason Reynolds, Marieke Nijkamp, and Laurie Halse Anderson.
