Book excerpt: What makes a nation happy? Is one country's sense of happiness the same as another's? In the last two decades, psychologists and economists have learned a lot about who's happy and who isn't. The Dutch are, the Romanians aren't, and Americans are somewhere in between... After years of going to the world's least happy countries, Eric Weiner, a veteran foreign correspondent, decided to travel and evaluate each country's different sense of happiness and discover the nation that seemed happiest of all. ·He discovers the relationship between money and happiness in tiny and extremely wealthy Qatar (and it's not a good one) ·He goes to Thailand, and finds that not thinking is a contented way of life. ·He goes to the tiny Himalayan kingdom of Bhutan, and discovers they have an official policy of Gross National Happiness! ·He asks himself why the British don't do happiness? In Weiner's quest to find the world's happiest places, he eats rotten Icelandic shark, meditates in Bangalore, visits strip clubs in Bangkok and drinks himself into a stupor in Reykjavik. Full of inspired moments, The Geography of Bliss accomplishes a feat few travel books dare and even fewer achieve: to make you happier.

Two months before he died, renowned literary critic Anatole Broyard called his grown son and daughter to his side to impart a secret he had kept all their lives and most of his own: he was black. Born in the French Quarter in 1920, Anatole had begun to conceal his racial identity after his family moved to Brooklyn and his parents resorted to "passing" in order to get work. As he grew older and entered the ranks of the New York literary elite, he maintained the favßade. Now his daughter Bliss tries to make sense of his choices. Seeking out unknown relatives in New York, Los Angeles, and New Orleans, Bliss uncovers the 250-year history of her family in America and chronicles her own evolution from privilged WASP to a woman of mixed-race ancestry.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Appreciation No matter what the occasion, every Sikh religious service concludes with the reading of a hymn from the Guru Granth. Sikhs in attendance listen to it most raptly so as to understand this guiding message from the Guru Granth. But understanding the sacred poetry of Gurbani is not always so easy. At least four complete translations in English of the entire Guru Granth existby Manmohan Singh, Gopal Singh, Gurbachan Singh Talib, and Pritam Singh Chahalalong with many excellent translations of selections of Gurbani. However, Daljit Singh Jawas work is different.Mr. Jawa does not provide a literal translation of the entire shabad. Instead he gives the central idea of the shabad followed by a commentary on its theme and essential meaning. This would automatically enhance an understanding of the shabad. Sikhism teaches that the only way for a Sikh to talk to his Guru, the only way that the Guru in the Guru Granth comes alive is when a Sikh reads and tries to understand the word of the Guru. Mr. Jawas work - a labor of love - is an attempt to facilitate the latter. Sikh tradition dictates that this hymn is the one on the left page when the Guru Granth is opened at random, which usually means the middle half or so of the Guru Granth. Mr Jawas novel attempt takes advantage of this and his book covers only the first shabad on the left (even numbered) folia from pages 300 to 1100. Sikhs everywhere will find this book most useful as long as they are not content merely to read it as the final word but take it as a guide to foster further thinking and understanding about what they are reading. I. J. Singh, DDS, PhD, August 12, 1995, New York

Book excerpt: Recognized masterpieces of Indian literature, the Guru Granth Sahib and the Dasam Granth are fundamental to the Sikh religion, not only in the physical layout of temples and in ceremonies of worship, but as infallible reference texts offering counsel and instruction. Teachings of the Sikh Gurus presents a brand new selection of key passages from these sacred scriptures, translated into modern English by leading experts, Christopher Shackle and Arvind-pal Singh Mandair. Including six longer compositions and many shorter hymns thematically organised by topics such as Time and Impermanence, Self and Mind, Authority, and Ethics, the book’s accessible and carefully chosen extracts distil the essence of Sikhism’s remarkable textual and intellectual legacy, depicting how its message of universal tolerance suits the contemporary world. The detailed introduction and notes to the translations aid readers’ comprehension of the hymns’ form and content, as well as providing some historical context, making it an ideal introduction to Sikh literature.

Sri Sathya Sai International Organization (SSSIO) offers the September 2023 issue of Sathya Sai–The Eternal Companion at the divine lotus feet of Bhagawan Sri Sathya Sai Baba with love, reverence, and gratitude. This issue contains a divine discourse Swami gave on September 4, 1996, on the auspicious occasion of Sri Krishna Janmashtami (birthday of Lord Krishna). He explains that our real wealth is Love for God, which grants permanent and supreme bliss, while all worldly pleasures are fleeting and illusory. Through examples, Bhagawan highlights how Sri Krishna personified bliss, captivated the hearts of all devotees, and could be captured only through pure love. Finally, He urges everyone to follow His teachings implicitly as the Lord Krishna and His words are not different. The editorial, The Ganesha Principle, expounds on the inner significance, principles, teachings, and stories of Lord Ganesha. Such understanding and practice increase one’s joy and help in the path to Self-Realization. The publication contains beautiful stories of Lord Ganesha and the unique personal experiences of devotees with Sri Sathya Sai Baba. It also features articles on the glory of womanhood, ideal Sai Young Adults, Sathya Sai Education, and loving services rendered by the SSSIO in war-torn Ukraine. A brief overview of the growth of the SSSIO in Switzerland shows how Swami’s universal and eternal message has spread over the decades.

As two near-centenarian citizens prepare for their annual birthday tea, a third vows to interrupt the proceedings with a bold declaration. The Remnants cartwheels rambunctiously through the lives of wood-splitters, garment-menders, and chervil farmers, while exposing an electrical undercurrent of secrets, taboos, and unfulfilled longings. With his signature wit and wordplay, Robert Hill delivers a bittersweet gut-buster of an elegy to the collective memory of a community.
