Book excerpt: An abundance of historical scholarship about early Whitman County pioneers exists, but very little focuses on how on the devastating impact settlers had on Indigenous communities. Documentation exists, but much of the framing of this regional history is one-sided, and part of what Feagin describes as the "white racial framing" (2013) of the origin story of Washington Territory. Using counter-narrative and critical analysis I trouble the narrative of my own pioneer past as a 5th generation Washingtonian, and my present as a critical multicultural scholar and educator. As such, this dissertation is a qualitative narrative inquiry that draws on historical research methods to tell the story of family history--a settler colonial subjectivity--juxtaposed against the Indigenous culture and history that was disrupted and displaced as part of colonization. As part of the narrative inquiry, I had an ongoing dialogue with Alex Kuo, a long-time Washington state poet, scholar, and mentor as the narrative takes shape in response to my responsibility as a critical multicultural educator to unsettling my subjectivities and historical roots. While "another pioneer family history" might seem to be a well-covered subject, approaching this history by contextualizing and de-centering it with tribal history, particularly the Indian Removal Act and subsequent federal acts that "opened" the territory to settlement, and the effect that had on local tribes has not been covered in this way.Using Critical Race Theory, TribalCrit Theory, and Critical Multiculturalism as the theoretical and conceptual frameworks, I examine the settler colonial roots of qualitative research, which pave the way for using narrative inquiry as my methodology. Histories of the Palus, the context of that history within the broader histories of Indigenous histories vis a vis settler colonialism and westward expansion, and how my family and history is complicit in settler colonialism form the initial phase of my narrative inquiry. My contribution to the narrative inquiry includes six vignettes that illustrate my journey as a critical multicultural educator and the events and people that influenced me. My hope is that the work I do in this dissertation can be useful for future Critical Multicultural Educators.

Book excerpt: In 2008 the Canadian government apologized to the victims of the notorious Indian residential school system, and established a Truth and Reconciliation Commission whose goal was to mend the deep rifts between Aboriginal peoples and the settler society that engineered the system. Unsettling the Settler Within argues that in order to truly participate in the transformative possibilities of reconciliation, non-Aboriginal Canadians must undergo their own process of decolonization. They must relinquish the persistent myth of themselves as peacemakers and acknowledge the destructive legacy of a society that has stubbornly ignored and devalued Indigenous experience. Today’s truth and reconciliation processes must make space for an Indigenous historical counter-narrative in order to avoid perpetuating a colonial relationship between Aboriginal and settler peoples. A compassionate call to action, this powerful book offers all Canadians – both Indigenous and not – a new way of approaching the critical task of healing the wounds left by the residential school system.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “An unexpected joy of a book . . . it follows an emotional and culinary journey from childhood in pre-independence Uganda to London in the 21st century.”—The Sunday Times Through the personal story of Yasmin Alibhai-Brown’s family and the food and recipes they’ve shared together, The Settler’s Cookbook tells the history of Indian migration to the UK via East Africa. Her family was part of the mass exodus from India to East Africa during the height of British imperial expansion, fleeing famine and lured by the prospect of prosperity under the empire. In 1972, expelled from Uganda by Idi Amin, they moved to the UK, where Yasmin has made her home with an Englishman. The food she cooks now combines the traditions and tastes of her family’s hybrid history. Here you’ll discover how shepherd’s pie is much enhanced by sprinkling in some chili, Victoria sponge can be enlivened by saffron and lime, and the addition of ketchup to a curry can be life-changing . . . “Alibhai-Brown paints a lively picture of a community that stayed trapped in old ways until it was too late to change . . . [a] brave book.”—The Guardian “For many of us food is the gateway experience into other cultures and lives. Yasmin’s personal story intertwined with the foods which mean so much to her touched me deeply. And made me hungry. You can’t ask for more.”—Gavin Esler, author of Brexit Without the Bullshit: The Facts on Food, Jobs, Schools, and the NHS “It’s beautifully written, as you would expect, and utterly fascinating. There are some wonderful dishes here too.”—Tribune

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Buccaneers, Explorers and Settlers studies how during 'the long 18th century' British incursions into the Pacific transformed Europe's knowledge of that great ocean. Buccaneers devastated Spanish settlements and shipping in the South Sea, and the accounts by Dampier and his companions of their exploits became best-sellers. Anson's circumnavigation carried on the tradition of commerce-raiding, but it represented the beginnings of a more official interest in the Pacific and its resources. Later in the 18th century the hopes of speculative geographers that unknown continents and sea-passages existed in the Pacific prompted a series of expeditions by Cook and his contemporaries. New peoples were discovered as well as new lands, and the voyages led to changing perceptions of their lifestyles. Exploration was followed by trade and settlement in which Cook's associates such as Banks played a leading part. Before the end of the century there were British settlements in New South Wales, Nootka Sound had become a centre of international dispute, and across the Pacific traders, whalers and missionaries were following the tracks of the explorers.
