Download or read book Trouble in Guyana written by Peter Simms and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-11-01 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1966, Trouble in Guyana has shown the political development of the colony against the background of clashes between personalities and ideas. For many years it was the Marxist Premier Dr Cheddi Jagan and his American born wife who led the movement for independence in Guyana. Their ambition, it was suggested, was to make British Guiana the first Communist state in South America and the Caribbean. The author knew the Jagans and other political leaders. British Guyana became independent on 26th May 1966. Demonstrations, strikes, and riots accompanied, or led, every political development and, in the unsettled state of affairs, the British Government was unwilling to relinquish its control. However, in 1964, the ever-increasing violence became close to civil war, and it seemed possible that the Guyanese people might be irrevocably split. This book looks beyond the immediate causes, to the deep-rooted feelings of the six peoples, many of whose ancestors were brought over as slaves or, what was almost the same, as indentured labourers. It also probes the connections between Guyanese problems and the worldwide struggle between the communist nations and the West. This is an important historical reference work for scholars and researchers of colonial history, Latin American history and Caribbean history.

Book excerpt: In flight from the tame familiarity of home in Bombay, a twenty-six-year-old cricket journalist chucks his job and arrives in Guyana, a forgotten colonial society of raw, mesmerizing beauty. Amid beautiful, decaying wooden houses in Georgetown, on coastal sugarcane plantations, and in the dark rainforest interior scavenged by diamond hunters, he grows absorbed with the fantastic possibilities of this new place where descendants of the enslaved and indentured have made a new world. Ultimately, to fulfill his purpose, he prepares to mount an adventure of his own. His journey takes him beyond Guyanese borders, and his companion will be the feisty, wild-haired Jan. In this dazzling novel, propelled by a singularly forceful voice, Rahul Bhattacharya captures the heady adventures of travel, the overheated restlessness of youth, and the paradoxes of searching for life's meaning in the escape from home. The Sly Company of People Who Care is the winner of the 2012 Royal Society of Literature Ondaatje Prize.

Book excerpt: Winner of the Cundill History Prize Winner of the Frederick Douglass Book Prize Named One of the Best Books of the Year by NPR A breathtakingly original work of history that uncovers a massive enslaved persons' revolt that almost changed the face of the Americas Named one of the best books of the year by NPR, Blood on the River also won two of the highest honors for works of history, capturing both the Frederick Douglass Prize and the Cundill History Prize in 2021. A book with profound relevance for our own time, Blood on the River “fundamentally alters what we know about revolutionary change” according to Cundill Prize juror and NYU history professor Jennifer Morgan. Nearly two hundred sixty years ago, on Sunday, February 27, 1763, thousands of slaves in the Dutch colony of Berbice—in present-day Guyana—launched a rebellion that came amazingly close to succeeding. Blood on the River is the explosive story of this little-known revolution, one that almost changed the face of the Americas. Michael Ignatieff, chair of the Cundill Prize jury, declared that Blood on the River “tells a story so dramatic, so compelling that no reader will be able to put the book down.” Drawing on nine hundred interrogation transcripts collected by the Dutch when the rebellion collapsed, and which were subsequently buried in Dutch archives, historian Marjoleine Kars has constructed what Pulitzer Prize–winning historian Eric Foner calls “a gripping narrative that brings to life a forgotten world.”
Download or read book Guyana written by John Gafar and published by Nova Publishers. This book was released on 2003 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this book is to examine the performance of Guyana's economy during the era of dirigisme and the period of economic liberalisation with emphasis on a market economy, using all available micro-and macro-data. In a much broader and meaningful sense, this book deals with the socio-economic progress of Guyana from the 1960s, with heavy emphasis on the market reforms, because this is the dominant and interesting story for policy lessons in the Third World. This book also focuses on what has happened to poverty, inequality, and other social indicators during the reform period. Until now, there has not been any systematic examination of the effects of the economic reforms in Guyana on unemployment, wages and industrial activity; poverty and inequality; farmers' response to price liberalisation; education and health indicators; ethnicity and growth; and governance, crime and corruption. These issues and more are the subject matter of this book. The book refers to those aspects of Guyana's history and recent political events that bear directly on economic policy and the performance of the economic system.
Book Synopsis The Venezuela-Guyana Border Dispute by : Jacqueline A. Braveboy-wagner
Download or read book The Venezuela-Guyana Border Dispute written by Jacqueline A. Braveboy-wagner and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-07-11 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The expiration in 1982 of the Protocol of Port-of-Spain reheated a border dispute between Venezuela and Guyana that had been frozen since 1970, Almost at once, Venezuelan ultranationalists asserted the need to recover by force the Essequibo region of Guyana--two-thirds of that country--which Venezuela had long claimed. While rejecting force as a solution, the Venezuelan government has indicated that the Protocol will not be renewed, thus pushing the economically and politically vulnerable Guyana toward new and uncertain negotiations. This book describes the actors and their stake in the conflict, the capacity of each to develop the disputed region, and the implications of the Venezuelan claim for both sides. Incorporating a critical examination of the conflict's historical-legal background, Dr. Braveboy-Wagner chronicles the progress of the dispute through its various stages and describes the attempts of both sides to elicit outside support, especially from other Third World nations. Finally, she assesses the possibilities for a solution by force and by compromise and considers the potential for U.S. involvement.

Download or read book Global Guyana written by Oneka LaBennett and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 2024-04-16 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Exposes the global threat of environmental catastrophe and the forms of erasure that structure Caribbean women’s lives in the overlooked nation of Guyana Previously ranked among the hemisphere’s poorest countries, Guyana is becoming a global leader in per capita oil production, a shift which promises to profoundly transform the nation. This sea change presents a unique opportunity to dissect both the environmental impacts of modern- world resource extraction and the obscured yet damaging ways in which intersectional race and gender formations circumscribe Caribbean women’s lives. Drawing from archival research and oral history, and examining mass-mediated flashpoints across the African and Indian diasporas—including Rihanna’s sonic routes, ethnic conflict reportage, HBO’s Lovecraft Country, and Netflix’s Indian Matchmaking—Global Guyana repositions this marginalized nation as a nexus of social and economic activity which drives popular culture and ideas about sexuality while reshaping the geopolitical and literal topography of the Caribbean region. Oneka LaBennett employs the powerful analytic of the pointer broom to disentangle the symbiotic relationship between Guyanese women’s gendered labor and global racial capitalism. She illuminates how both oil extraction and sand export are implicated in a well-established practice of pillaging the Caribbean’s natural resources while masking the ecological consequences that disproportionately affect women and children. Global Guyana uncovers how ecological erosion and gendered violence are entrenched in extractive industries emanating from this often-effaced but pivotal country. Sounding the alarm on the portentous repercussions that ambitious development spells out for the nation’s people and its geographical terrain, LaBennett issues a warning for all of us about the looming threat of global environmental calamity.
Download or read book Guyana written by Chaitram Singh and published by Praeger. This book was released on 1988-07-07 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume examines the politics and government of Guyana from World War II to the present. Professor Singh ably describes the downfall of a nation which, when it became independent in 1966, had good prospects, ample resources, and a relatively educated population. He examines how a liberal democracy succumbed to authoritarian tendencies, resulting in a defacto one-party state. Next, the author demonstrates how economic development became a casualty of over-centralilzed political and economic decision making. He argues that the persistence of underdevelopment in ex-colonies such as Guyana is traceable to domestic causes.
