Book excerpt: A fun-filled and nostalgic exploration of Polynesian Pop in the Motor City When the South Sea craze swept over the nation in the mid-twentieth century, the wave of island-themed décor and tropical cocktails did not pass by Detroit. The Tropics and Club Bali offered a warming escape from dreary Midwest winters. At its completion in 1967, the Mauna Loa was the most expensive restaurant built east of the Mississippi. With its lush interior and celebrity patrons, it did not disappoint. The Chin Tiki, with its exquisitely handcrafted features, was no less an exceptional destination. Even today, long after the Polynesian craze faded, a new generation has taken up the tiki torch and brought island flavor and flair back to the city. Join author Renee Tadey on a sweeping journey through the tiki destinations of Detroit.

Book Synopsis Walks, Tracks and Trails of Queensland's Tropics by : Derrick Stone
Download or read book Walks, Tracks and Trails of Queensland's Tropics written by Derrick Stone and published by CSIRO PUBLISHING. This book was released on 2016-03-01 with total page 552 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Queensland’s tropics provide numerous environments for enjoyable walking: lush rainforests, cloud-shrouded mountains, extinct volcanoes, savanna woodlands, and magnificent beaches on the coast and Great Barrier Reef islands. This book brings together more than 150 of the best walks, tracks or trails in Queensland’s tropics, located within the coastal strip between Rockhampton and Cooktown. Walks vary from short boardwalk strolls in the lowland rainforests of Daintree National Park to 4-6 day hiking and camping trips on Hinchinbrook Island. Other routes follow old gold miners’ and forestry tracks or coaching routes or feature historical sites, rivers, lagoons, geological and geographical formations or much earlier Aboriginal communication tracks where Dreamtime stories add a further dimension. Man-made environments of abandoned gold towns, heritage riverfronts, Art Deco streetscapes and Second World War installations also feature. Most routes are best completed during the ‘Dry’ season (May to October) and walked by moderately fit individuals. Most do not require specialist navigation or bushcraft skills. Walks, Tracks and Trails of Queensland’s Tropics highlights the best the region has to offer. Easy-to-interpret maps are included to help you navigate, and the book’s size makes it convenient to carry in the backpack.

Book Synopsis Tropical Visions in an Age of Empire by : Felix Driver
Download or read book Tropical Visions in an Age of Empire written by Felix Driver and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2010-11-15 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The contrast between the temperate and the tropical is one of the most enduring themes in the history of the Western geographical imagination. Caught between the demands of experience and representation, documentation and fantasy, travelers in the tropics have often treated tropical nature as a foil to the temperate, to all that is civilized, modest, and enlightened. Tropical Visions in an Age of Empire explores images of the tropical world—maps, paintings, botanical drawings, photographs, diagrams, and texts—produced by European and American travelers over the past three centuries. Bringing together a group of distinguished contributors from disciplines across the arts and humanities, this volume contains eleven beautifully illustrated essays—arranged in three sections devoted to voyages, mappings, and sites—that consider the ways that tropical places were encountered, experienced, and represented in visual form. Covering a wide range of tropical sites in the Pacific, South Asia, West Africa, the Caribbean, and Latin America, the book will appeal to a broad readership: scholars of postcolonial studies, art history, literature, imperial history, history of science, geography, and anthropology.

Download or read book The Tropics written by Alfons Hug and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The idea of the Tropics has always been a cultural construct - and not just beyond the Tropics themselves. This catalogue takes European projections of the Tropics as its point of departure, and at the same time, aims to reflect on this construct. Two hundred exhibits from Africa, Asia, Oceania and tropical America from the collections of the Museum of Ethnology in Berlin enter into a dialogue with works by forty contemporary artists from Brazil, South America, Europe, Africa, Australia and Asia. This project is the first time that such a bridge has been built between works created in pre-modern times and contemporary works. The pre-modern art shows us the Tropics before they lost their innocence and became the so-called Third World; the strength of the contemporary art, for its part, is its high level of reflection and critical potential. Old and new art come together in this space: one goal is to examine the cultural weight of the natural landscape of the Tropics against the background of an unavoidable political and economic discourse. Artists include: Franz Ackermann, Fiona Tan, Andreas Gursky, Candida Höfer, Mark Dion, Jitish Kallat, Navin Rawanchaikul, Guy Tillim, amongst others. Published on the occasion of the exhibition The Tropics at Martin-Gropius-Bau, Berlin, September 2008 - January 2009.English text.
