Book Synopsis Nitrogen Economy in Tropical Soils by : N Ahmad
Download or read book Nitrogen Economy in Tropical Soils written by N Ahmad and published by . This book was released on 1996-10-31 with total page 456 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nitrogen Economy in Tropical Soils presents an authoritative and comprehensive state-of-the-art review on soil/plant nitrogen inter-relationships, with special reference to tropical soils and crops in aerobic and anaerobic environments. Use of isotopically labelled nitrogen in experimentation, especially in tropical environments, and recently developed analytical techniques for soil and plant materials are presented. An important aspect is the emphasis placed on the impact of the tropical environment on nitrogen transformations in the soil environment. This book should be an excellent source of information for senior undergraduate and graduate students with interest in soil/plant nitrogen inter-relationships, and for all levels of research workers in these fields.

Book excerpt: Agriculture extension work requires more than good intentions and rapport with farmers. The real challenge is usually establishing credibility in the agriculture skills area. Agriculture at the small farmer level in a developing country is a complex endeavor. Farmers have much they can teach you when it comes to land preparation, planting, harvesting, using tools, and other manual skills. Likewise, there are many yield boosting skills you can show them, especially in the areas of soil conservation, organic and chemical fertilizer use, and the safe and appropriate use of agricultural chemicals. This manual has been designed as an on-the-job reference for soil management and fertilizer use; hopefully, it will help along that sometimes bumpy road to credibility.

Book Synopsis Microbiology of Tropical Soils and Plant Productivity by : Y.R. Dommergues

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is an established fact that we must continually increase and improve agricultural production if we are to meet even the minimum requirements of a growing popu lation for food, shelter, and fuel. In recent years, the introduction of new plant varieties and the extensive use of fertilizers have effectively increased crop yields, but intensifying agricultural methods has often led to depleting soil fertility. Two examples of the harmful consequences of intensive farming practices are the loss of up to 2.5 cm of topsoil every 15 years in the United States through erosion and the alarming rise in environmental pollution through widespread use of pesticides. Countless other processes affecting the activity of soil micro flora and the inter actions between microorganisms and plants may pose an equal danger to soil equilibrium, but their potential hazards are often overlooked because of an insufficient understanding of soil microbiology on the part of scientists. In the first published study of its kind, the authors of this book have attempted to address major aspects of the microbial activity of soil in the tropics. Tropical conditions serve as an ideal context for a discussion of soil microbiology, since biological processes in the soil are particularly active in tropical environments in comparison to other settings and in relation to physical and chemical processes.

Book Synopsis Soils of Tropical Forest Ecosystems by : Andreas Schulte
Download or read book Soils of Tropical Forest Ecosystems written by Andreas Schulte and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-14 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An understanding of the characteristics and the ecology of soils, particularly those of forest ecosystems in the humid tropics, is central to the development of sustainable forest management systems. The present book examines the contribution that forest soil science and forest ecology can make to sustainable land use in the humid tropics. Four main issues are addressed: characteristics and classification of forest soils, chemical and hydrological changes after forest utilization, soil fertility management in forest plantations and agroforestry systems as well as ecosystem studies from the dipterocarp forest region of Southeast Asia. Additionally, case studies include work from Guyana, Costa Rica, the Philippines, Malaysia, Australia and Nigeria.
