Book Synopsis Lessons from Amazonia by : Richard O. Bierregaard
Download or read book Lessons from Amazonia written by Richard O. Bierregaard and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2001-12-11 with total page 510 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Deforestation is occurring at an alarming rate in many parts of the world, causing destruction of natural habitat and fragmentation of what remains. Nowhere is this problem more pressing than in the Amazon rainforest, which is rapidly vanishing in the face of enormous pressure from humans to exploit it. This book presents the results of the longest-running and most comprehensive study of forest fragmentation ever undertaken, the Biological Dynamics of Forest Fragments Project (BDFFP) in central Amazonia, the only experimental study of tropical forest fragmentation in which baseline data are available before isolation from continuous forest took place.A joint project of Brazil’s National Institute for Research in Amazonia and the U.S. Smithsonian Institution, the BDFFP has investigated the many effects that habitat fragmentation has on plants, invertebrates, and vertebrates. The book provides an overview of the BDFFP, reports on its case studies, looks at forest ecology and tree genetics, and considers what issues are involved in establishing conservation and management guidelines.
Book Synopsis The Brazilian Amazon Rainforest by : Luiz C. Barbosa
Download or read book The Brazilian Amazon Rainforest written by Luiz C. Barbosa and published by University Press of America. This book was released on 2000 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Barbosa (sociology, San Francisco State University) provides a global, world-systemic analysis of the problem of deforestation of the Brazilian Amazon rainforest. He shows how changes in global ecopolitics demanding sustainable development, coupled with the onset of democracy in Brazil, substantially altered the battle over the future of Amazonia. He describes deforestation in the region in the context of an expanding frontier of global capitalism, and compares Amazon experiences with those of Costa Rica, Malaysia, and Indonesia.
Book Synopsis Decentralized Development in Latin America by : Paul Lindert
Download or read book Decentralized Development in Latin America written by Paul Lindert and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-03-02 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Much of the scholarly and professional literature on development focuses either on the ‘macro’ level of national policies and politics or on the ‘micro’ level of devel- ment projects and household or community socio-economic dynamics. By contrast, this collection pitches itself at the ‘meso’ level with a comparative exploration of the ways in which local institutions – municipalities, local governments, city authorities, civil society networks and others – have demanded, and taken on, a greater role in planning and managing development in the Latin American region. The book’s rich empirical studies reveal that local institutions have engaged upwards, with central authorities, to shape their policy and resource environments and in turn, been pressured from ‘below’ by local actors contesting the ways in which the structures and processes of local governance are framed. The examples covered in this volume range from global cities, such as Mexico and Santiago, to remote rural areas of the Bolivian and Brazilian Amazon. As a result the book provides a deep understanding of the diversity and complexity of local governance and local development in Latin America, while avoiding the stereotyped claims about the impact of globalisation or the potential benefits of decentralisation, as frequently stated in less empirically grounded analysis.

Book Synopsis Tropical Deforestation by : Jin-Bee Ooi
Download or read book Tropical Deforestation written by Jin-Bee Ooi and published by NUS Press. This book was released on 1993 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study addresses the now familiar problem of topical deforestation from an unfamiliar angle. More specifically, the author focuses on the time factor in the natural regeneration of the tropical rain forest. He examines the economics and practical implications of the very long period of time needed for such forests to regrow, and concludes that the tyranny of time makes it unlikely that the process of deforestation in the tropical rain forest countries can be halted.
