Book excerpt: Tropical Fruit Processing focuses on the improved food preservations methods of tropical fruits for lesser developed and developed countries. This book covers four tropical fruits, namely, guava, mango, papaya, and passion fruit. These fruits have the greatest growth potential based on the knowledge and technology acquired in their cultivation, processing, and preservation. Each chapter in this book discusses the botany, cultivars, horticulture, harvesting, handling, storage, composition, packing, and processing of the fruit. A variety of processed products from these fruits, such as jellies, jams, preserves, purees, sauces, and juices, are also covered. Furthermore, this book describes various food preservation methods including dehydration, concentration, and canning. This book is an invaluable resource for scientists, technologists, manufacturers, students, and others concerned with cultivating, processing, manufacturing, research, development, or marketing of foods.

Book excerpt: Following a recommendation by the Elevent South Pacific Coference (1971), the south commission, at its thirty-fourth sesson, made provision in its 1972 budget for a technical meeting on tropical fruits, except bananas. It was felt that the cook Islands would be an ideal venue for this meeting because of the existence, for some time past, of citrus plantations in some islands of the group, in particular rarotonga, and of the increasing acreage of pineapple crops.

Download or read book Tropical Fruit in Developing Countries written by B. Jarimopas and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are three current realities which are addressed in this book. They are as follows: that there is a high incidence of post-harvest loss and a corresponding magnitude of shortage in research and development work on tropical fresh produce; that the global flow of information is increasing while agricultural labour is becoming scarcer and more expensive; and that tropical produce engineering technology must be thoroughly understood. Accordingly, the author makes two recommendations: for producer countries to instigate a dramatic increase in the research and development that they conduct into tropical fresh produce, and in the support that they provide for this research; and that the research trend should cover all economic tropical fruit and vegetable goods grown in the producer countries and all aspects of engineering technology that they use, with a particular emphasis on developing computerised non-destructive techniques for quality assurance.

Book Synopsis Solar Dried Tropical Fruits from Fiji by : Rupantri Raju
Download or read book Solar Dried Tropical Fruits from Fiji written by Rupantri Raju and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2012 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Postharvest losses of surplus seasonal fruits are a major problem in Fiji as well as other Pacific Islands. Most of the tropical fruits in the Pacific are seasonal, therefore they are limited in supply. When these fruits are in season, they are readily available but due to postharvest losses, there is alot of wastage of these surplus fruits. In the Pacific, there are very limited investigations conducted on the postharvest losses and preservation techniques of fruits. This book provides an insight into the use of solar dryers to minimize postharvest losses in pineapple and papaya and it also looks at the changes in the quality parameters of these solar dried fruits. Solar drying is a sustainable alternative to promote food security through food preservation. The findings should be useful in studying the quality parameters of some of the other seasonal Pacific fruits and is particulary useful to the scientific community and the food industry.

Book Synopsis Tropical Fruits by : Cristina Stewart Bogsan

Book excerpt: Pineapple (Ananas comosus (L.) Merril) is the major representative fruit of bromelains, cultivated in tropical and subtropical areas in developing countries. The knowledge of plant taxonomy, enzymes, antioxidants, or microbiology is beneficial to human health. Likewise, various industrial applications of pineapple-based products have led both developing and developed countries to grow dependent on the tropical fruit. The targeted audience of this book includes researchers and professional horticulturists interested in increasing the comprehension of not just the nutritional values of pineapple, but also about the technology employed to preserve the freshness of this fruit. The organization of the chapters and sections is also straightforward; Chapter One presents what a pineapple (Ananas comosus (L.) Merril) is, its taxonomy, distribution, origin, and morphology. Concluding the first part, Chapters Two and Three show the nutritional and medical values, stability and the potential therapeutic aspects of pineapples. In the second part of the book, the readers should find the relevant aspects of industrial preservation in Chapters Four, Five, Six and Seven, which talk about the harmful effects of UV and gamma radiation to freshness. Chapters Eight and Nine9 discuss postharvest conservation.
