Book excerpt: In TROPICAL FEASTS, you will find "sunsational", scintillating, and cosmopolitan-inspired recipes that will transport you from your own kitchen to the tropics. Mary and Alan Gold's debut collection of recipes and photography have been gathered over the past twenty years in their sailing travels and as chef aboard a 62 foot charter catamaran based in the Caribbean. Mary's cooking combines her distinctive island roots with inspiration from the many countries she and her husband Alan, and their two children have traveled to and lived in. These destinations include South Africa, South America, the United States, the Caribbean and the Hawaiian islands. These locales are reflected in the breakfasts, lunches, cocktails, appetizers, main courses, salads and desserts described in TROPICAL FEASTS. Recipes such as the Tropical Pineapple Chicken Salad, Alan's famous Monkey Lala cocktail, mouth-watering Macadamia Coconut-Crusted Mahi-Mahi with a Coconut & Lemon Grass Sauce and a tropical dessert of Mango Mousse with Grilled Fresh Mango, are a few of the delights that will be found in this cookbook. Stunning photography accompanies the recipes throughout this book. These photographs, taken by Alan transport you to some of the most scenic and tranquil places found in the Virgin Islands. They create a wonderful memento that could rest on any coffee table, ready to encourage discussion and planning for the next exctiting adventure. Mary and Alan hope this book will inspire you to create your own tropical food escape, where you can slow down, relish the joys of good company, great food and many "jollifications."

Book Synopsis Tropical Food: Chemistry and Nutrition V1 by : George Inglett
Download or read book Tropical Food: Chemistry and Nutrition V1 written by George Inglett and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 351 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tropical Foods: Chemistry and Nutrition, Volume 1 covers the proceedings of an international conference on Tropical Foods: Chemistry and Nutrition, held in Honolulu, Hawaii on March 28-30, 1979. It is organized into 18 chapters that focus on the progress in the chemistry and nutrition of tropical foods. After briefly discussing a variety of foods harvested in the Pacific region, this book examines food's sensory characteristics for food quality determination, such as color and appearance, aroma, taste, and texture. The subsequent chapters focus on papaya fruit; the composition of seed; and the chemical and biochemical changes during processing and storage. The book also explains the occurrence, biosynthesis, and pharmacological properties of macrocyclic piperidine and piperideine alkaloids. A chapter describes the chemical and physical changes in harvested fruits at various maturities and their relation to fruit quality, with emphasis on prickly pear. This is followed by discussions on varieties of citrus, avocados, and mangoes of the southern United States and flavor characteristics of muscadine grape and guava. Methods such as solar drying technology, juice extraction processes, and industrial methods of oxygen removal from grapefruit concentrate are also discussed. This book also covers the regulation of terpenoid contents of citrus fruits. Considerable chapters present the production of sugar; cereals from various sources; and non-wheat flours and starches as bread supplements. The concluding chapters examine the nutritional value and toxic properties of yam and the acridity and raphides content of aroid root crops. A discussion on the high effectivity of water-insoluble endosperm pentosan of rye and wheat for bread production is included. This book is an invaluable resource for food scientists, technologists, and manufacturers; students; and those interested in the field.
Book Synopsis Micronutrients in Tropical Food Crop Production by : Paul L.G. Vlek

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The mission of the International Fertilizer Development Center is to increase food production through the improvement of fertilizers and fertilizer practices for the developing countries with special emphasis on tropical and subtropical agriculture. The principal aim is to ensure that fertilizer technology is not a limiting factor to food production in those regions. Although the full extent to which deficiency of micronutrients hampers food production is yet un known, there is ample evidence that problem areas exist and more will be identified as crop production is intensified and marginal lands are exploited. Therefore, it seems fully appropriate at this time that IFDC, as an international organization, take a leadership role in developing micronutrient fertilizer technology appropriate for the tropics and subtropics. The gravity of micronutrient deficiency as a limiting factor to crop pro duction varies from crop to crop and from soil to soil. The effects may range from slight yield reductions to complete crop failure. While the economic impact of omitting micronutrients in seriously affected areas (e.g., Zn in Brazilian Cerrado) is convincing, it is difficult to estimate the yearly loss in crop production due to unsuspected micronutrient deficiency. Active soil and crop testing programs in regions with advanced agricultural systems are aimed at recognizing micronutrients as a limiting plant nutrient in time to allow corrective measures and prevent yield loss. Successful micronutrient monitoring systems are generally limited to developed economies or to developing economies producing export cash crops.

Book Synopsis An Introduction to Tropical Food Science by : Hans Gerd Muller
Download or read book An Introduction to Tropical Food Science written by Hans Gerd Muller and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1988-11-25 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This introduction to tropical food science addresses the needs of two groups of people. First, there are those living in the tropics who require a simple introductory text. Food science is perhaps the most important science affecting their lives. The second group consists of students, administrators, and workers in industry and research in temperate zones, who are concerned with food problems but who have no firsthand knowledge of the tropics. The text provides a concise and accessible guide to all the major elements of the subject, including the nutritional value of tropical foodstuffs, its digestion, and the preparation and preservation of food. The author has taken care to avoid the use of jargon and the text is supplemented by many useful and explanatory illustrations.

Book Synopsis Tropical food chains by : Ruerd Ruben
Download or read book Tropical food chains written by Ruerd Ruben and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2023-08-28 with total page 309 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "International supply chains of vulnerable tropical food products face major problems in the fields of quality performance and coordination between supply chain partners. Degradation and variability of quality, segmentation of supply networks and scattered production by smallholder producers could severely hinder reliable deliveries at required standards. Concerted efforts for improving governance regimes and management practices are required to enhance supply chain performance. This book provides a comprehensive overview of the interfaces between market outlet choice, supply chain governance, quality management and value added distribution. Main attention is given to better incentives and transparency in contracts and bargaining procedures that could contribute to reduced transaction costs and risk, as well as techno-managerial strategies for improving both quality and value added. The editors present an integrated interdisciplinary framework for the simultaneous analysis of technical, managerial and socio-economic dimensions of international supply chain originating in developing countries. Selected case studies based on extensive field research highlight in Costa Rica (mango and pepper), Ivory Coast (pineapples), Kenya (fish), Ethiopia (dairy), Ghana (cocoa), India (cashew) and China (vegetables and pork) provide detailed insights in different options for enhancing integrated quality management and supply chain coordination. Professionals and practioners involved in the design, management and assessment of (inter)national supply chains for tropical products will particularly benefit from this unique collection."

Book excerpt: Tropical Foods: Chemistry and Nutrition, Volume 2 contains the proceedings of an International Conference on Tropical Foods: Chemistry and Nutrition, held in Honolulu, Hawaii, on March 28-30, 1979. The papers explore the chemical and nutritional aspects of tropical foods from around the world, including vegetables, coconut foods, wheat, and soybean foods. This volume is comprised of 19 chapters and begins with an overview of the nutritional aspects of some tropical plant foods by focusing on nutrition, the nutritional composition of some plant foods, and the applications and limitations of food composition tables, along with assessment of nutritional status and some obstacles to nutritional health. The next chapter surveys tropical foods in the Far East, with emphasis on the processing and nutritional evaluation of fermented foods as well as fermentation and other methods of food preservation. Vegetable production in tropical Asian countries such as the Philippines is also considered. Subsequent chapters look at tropical home gardens as a nutrition intervention, tropical foods in Central America, and some aspects of traditional African foods. This book should be a valuable resource for biochemists, nutritionists, and nutritional scientists.
Book Synopsis Carbon Footprints and Food Systems by : Paul Brenton
Download or read book Carbon Footprints and Food Systems written by Paul Brenton and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2010-09-21 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report addresses carbon labeling schemes, a high-profile issue and one that has important economic implications for developing countries. Carbon accounting and labeling instruments are designed to present information on greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) from supply chains. These instruments have become an important awareness-raising channel for governments, producers, retailers and consumers to bring about the reduction of GHGs. At the same time, they have emerged as a crucial element of supply chain management, trade logistics and, potentially, trade regulations between countries. But the underlying science of GHG emissions is only partially developed. Many of these schemes are based on rudimentary knowledge of GHG emissions and have mainly been designed by industrialized countries. There is a concern that these systems do not accurately reflect production processes in developing countries, and that they may even shift consumer preferences away from developing country exports. The report includes an analysis of current and emerging carbon labeling schemes and an assessment of available data, emissions factors and knowledge gaps of carbon footprinting methodologies. The report also analyzes carbon accounting methodologies for sugar and pineapple products from Zambia and Mauritius according to PAS 2050 guidelines, to illustrate whether these schemes accurately represent the production systems in developing countries. The report concludes with a series of recommendations on how carbon footprint labeling can be made more development-friendly
