It is transparent, tranquil, and rapid; it is a torrent at Schaffouse, a gulf at Laufen, a river at Sickingen, a flood at Mayence, a lake at St. Goar, and a marsh at Leyde. The Rhine is calm, at least towards evening, and appears as if sleeping--a phenomenon more apparent than real, and which is visible upon all great rivers.
